Gotta remember our pressure forwards are young. They were always going to drop off through the year.

We were playing Owies (2nd year of playing Afl), Durdin, Carroll and Motlop all first year players.

It will stand us in great stead in a year or two when they have more AFL hardened bodies. For now, we have to put up with the inconsistency.

Yeah its crazy how young and inexperienced our forward line is...we've done really well to be 8-3. Can't be too harsh on those boys they've exceeded expectations this year.

Even Curnow has been out for 2 years but then, he is superstar.

Mckay out...we've just had no continuity either and lacking talls.

Our next 5 after this week off.

Rd 13 - * at MCG (A)
Rd 14 - Tigers at MCG (A)
Rd 15 - Freo at Marvel (H)
Rd 16 - Saints at Marvel (H)
Rd 17 - Eagles at Optus (A)

If, IF, we get out of this run here with a positive win-loss ratio, and those boys coming back from injury are close to fully fit, watch out. The week off will do us good hopefully.

Blockbusters and the teams around us in the next 5 weeks. Enormous for our season and where we can end up come Rd 23. But it is imperative we start off with a great win against these lot first. Carroll, Newnes and Weiters the outs I’d say.

I'd take 2 wins 3 losses personally. Still be in a good position at 11-6 and start getting players back. Any more wins than that would be a pleasant bonus.

We’re now running paper thin on KPP’s, and rucks…
Almost have to bite the bullet and slot Marchbank back into the side provided he gets through next week unscathed…
Kemp isn’t a second KPD tall either but we’re basically stuffed for options atm…

INS
*Kennedy - no brainer
*Marchbank - fingers crossed 🤞
*Martin - wasn’t great in VFL but provides more of what we need
*Kemp - (sub) provides flexibility

OUTS
  • Carroll - needs a spell
  • Motlop - back to develop Martin provides much more up forward
  • Newnes - team balance
  • Weitering - 🤮

I am hoping both kemp and marchbank play. Not sure Marchbank will be ready though. Thought Martin was growing before his injury but may need match fitness. Still think Dow needs work but hoping he gets the run.

Carroll and motlop both with good runs at it, probably need to be managed IMO.

This makes me slightly ill... retain Dow, push Kennedy forward and JSOS in defence. I’d consider Markov to do an equivalent ruck cameo as per Casboult first game allowing TDK to run loose in defence or forward as needed.

I also think Stocker might be on shaky ground.

Out: weitering, Carrol, Motlop
In: Markov, Kennedy, Boyd (sub)

Stocker is horrendous on the left foot. Really needs to work on it and has otherwise been shaky on his preferred foot at times. He’s one who will get better with more games but definitely has been rusty.

Some of Stocker’s kicking has been horrible at times, shanking & grubbing the ball, missing easy targets…

Weitering out, Marchbank or Kemp in (I'd go Marchbank if fit)
Dow out, Kennedy in (Dow wasn't awful, but Kennedy is obvious in)
Motlop perhaps out, Martin in
Carroll was medi-sub - perhaps out, and Kemp as medi-sub.

In the end, AFL game on Friday, VFL game on Saturday, so whoever has role of medi-sub can play VFL if not activated. My thinking for Kemp is that if one of the mids/smaller players go down, we can reshuffle a bit. But if a taller player goes down, height of Kemp could be handy.

Hopefully JSOS is fit enough to act as interference as 2nd ruck. I don't wish to see Cripps in any ruck contests. Really cannot see someone from MSD coming into side straight away as they would have to familiarise themselves to game plan, and players. But who knows...? Someone might have their AFL dreams come true....

Our next 5 after this week off.

Rd 13 - * at MCG (A) W
Rd 14 - Tigers at MCG (A) L
Rd 15 - Freo at Marvel (H) W/L
Rd 16 - Saints at Marvel (H) W/L
Rd 17 - Eagles at Optus (A) W

I reckon these will be the results. We will drop one of Freo or Saints.

3-2 those 5 weeks

11-5 for the season with the cavalry coming back. We should get a home final finishing 5/6th on the ladder.

Obviously one week at a time but this team has heart now.

They seem content to give a training block as reason enough to promote a player, though depending on their activity over the bye period (mandatory time off…), we’ll see how Marchbank & Martin present for AFL promotion.
Would have liked Marchbank to play on the w/end just gone & Martin got a run in the middle. Kemp should be ready to go.

BYE cannot come quick enough IMO. Weeto seemingly a huge loss and if we drop this one without him the media mozzies will be all over us.

Over and over and over again when we should take care of the bombers, we drop our bundle. The year when the bombers were basically a B grade team in 2013(?) and we showed up licking our lips we went down in a screaming heap.
It was typical Carlton of the time, mentally fragile and getting way ahead of ourselves. I'm hoping those days are gone.

It was good to get a lesson from the pies. An excellent wake call before we head into the back half of the season.

This game? It has ghosts from the pasts written all over it.

Hopefully we can exorcise accordingly.

Blues by 23. But don't be surprised folks.

Man this gets thrown around so often...

Wake up call? What were we asleep?

We're struggling like hell to get our best team on the park and despite that we've won 4 in a row and a bee's dick away from 5 in a row...

The game was a result of Weitering going down... that is more than just the player himself... that is a dent to confidence for the rest of the group and more importantly, we lost the guy that organises the back line...

I agree there were some elements of last year there, but the fact that they still fought tooth and nail and almost found a way should eliminate those thoughts.

Sure it hurts to lose to the Pies but that's no indication that we're going to lose to *. This group has shown that they've really grown mentally and have an instilled belief that they are going to win the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lost to *.. I'd be shocked...

We will beat them comfortably. 40 points imo.

Voss must rate him to bring him back from a LTI after 1 reserve match and then straight back in after injuring himself in his first match. Should have had at least a couple in the 2s to find touch
Stocker played a month in reserves before his first game. Was brilliant too particularly with his disposal so it might just be nerves / adjusting to seniors that has caused some scrappy kicking.

Based on who has played this year and when I reckon Voss's pecking order for small / medium defenders is:
1. Docherty
2. Saad
3. Williams
4. Newman
5. Stocker
6. Plowman
7. Boyd
8. Williamson

We usually play 4. Plowman unique in that he is also competing for the 3rd tall spot.

Outs
Weitering
Motlop
Dow
Carroll

Ins
Kemp
Martin
Kennedy

Id like to see martin play at FF and utilise his marking ability.

Allow charlie to get up the ground and use his marking so we dont get stuck trying to pass the wing.

Walsh cripps and kennedy to all spend time in the fwd half. If we can get 4/5 goals out of these guys its a win. Cripps also push hard fwd when in mid as they dont have a clear oppo for him in the air.

Look for saad to dominate and prove he is much better than hind.

Marchy needs game time in the 2s

Could potentially look at boyd over stocker. To give more run and carry as they dont transition well into def and boyd can help take advantage kf this

Everyone is calling for Carroll as an out - two weeks for him to get his finger in better shape and rest his legs he will be as fresh as any other noobie - we need him and Durdin in the side more than a few other unreliables.

I don't get why so many are dropping Motlop?
He's kicked a goal every game and could've had 4-5 against Swans. Deserves another week.

Weitering for Kemp - not ideal, but the only thing that really works structurally.
Carroll for Martin
Dow for Kennedy - extremely unlucky but Kennedy the preferred option.
One of Newnes or Cottrell to become the sub.

We should win this one despite the outs. Essendon aren't as good as Pies and we can structure the team accordingly. Obviously you can't predict injuries, but bringing Carroll on for Weitering was always going to hurt.

what has been reliable about Carroll exactly? every time i see him he looks about 12+ months off being ready for AFL footy - i always wonder why he is kicking on his opposite foot....then realise he's not

Carrol was good in his first 2 rounds against bottom 4 sides. Has not adapted to the step up in pressure in the next 3 against better opposition

I have to say, at times when he's kicking from a mark, I have the need for a fast forward button because it feels like he's in slow motion with his action.
