Don’t get it with Setters.

First year or so he was the best tackle at the club & heading in the right direction.

Since then he’s fringe 23 at best. Don’t think he’s had a major injury either.
Reminds of Marchesani...in how he looked promising but never really reached any great heights. No spud, just seems to have not take another step and probably more suited to inside mid but no real spot available so had to try his hand at wing but probably lacks that extra yard of pace to excel there.
I do not know where his career is at. Crossroads time for him. Like Will Brodie he might just need a change of clubs to reset.
Still time to turn things around but I am of similar feeling about him. Fringe 23 at best. A few times he did well on wing helping in defence with some good marks but then formed dropped away and out of the side. I do not see any other role for him at Carlton but wing and if he not best suited there, he probably needs to change clubs as cannot see him breaking into inside mid spots here. Kennedy, Hewitt and Cerra gone past him. Two of those guys were not at club last year so that ship has probably sailed.

Given his height, i'd throw him down back ATM in the interceptor role - seemed to go OK earlier in the year as the defensive wing insofar as he got back and intercepted a few

He was racking up the tackle numbers last season in the VFL. Went downhill last year after being placed on the wing, and has no hurt factor in his game or output IMO. Just meanders about.

Setters falls into the Dow basket in that he's essentially an inside mid who is/was fighting for one spot which Kennedy has grabbed.

I guess he was assessed as having slightly more strings to his bow than Dow so was getting a gig early, but I think he too might need to move on although he probably has less currency than Dow at the moment.

I don't personally trust the saddler to be part of any progress we make - maybe he already has been who knows, just find him flakey at best and having little impact at worst

Yea Cottrell was on Sidebottom and O'brien on Daicos. Cottrell was out of position a lot of times Pies got the turnover, Sidebottom owned that wing and so he should tbh with his experience. Learning opportunity for Cotts

I wonder if any instruction was given to Cottrell to tag Sidebottom? Assume Clarke is responsible for the wingers so would find it strange if Sidebottom was cutting loose that he would be allowed to continue all game. It's not like he wouldn't have the run to stay with him.

But then again, as you say maybe he was left to his own devices to see how/if he could work through it. Will be good vision for Cottrell to watch this week.

Just don't know if you would/should play that game with 4 points on the line.

thought we looked tired on sunday - don't ask me what that looks like I just did - and then when 23 went off it was like an army hearing its general had been killed - a palpable sense at the ground as our energy lagged, seemed to take a lot of our fight and composure with him.......
Agree….until Sam Walsh said “**** that for a joke” and went nuts at the ball in the second quarter.

Unless we pull a ready to go KPP/KPD from the MSD ( which i think we will take at least 1) , suspect Kemp will come in over Marchbank

Either way, neither are the ideal selections as genuine KPDs
TDk is our best bet. Not kidding. He’s a natural key defender.

Our best bet is McKay and Pitto to return soon and TDk to head back.

From the AFL's website - I wonder if Williamson comes into discussions ahead of Carroll. Martin will be back I assume. Philp has been kicking goals regularly though when I watched him I thought he was a fair way off.

State league affiliate: Carlton (VFL)
This weekend: Northern Bullants v Carlton at Preston City Oval, Sunday May 29, 1.05pm AEST

MATCH CENTRE Check out all the stats from Carlton's clash

Experienced duo Will Setterfield (23 touches, eight tackles) and Tom Williamson (22 possessions, one goal, six tackles) were important for the Blues in their nine-point, come-from-behind win against the Bullants at Preston City Oval.

Jack Martin returned from a calf injury with 16 possessions, while Brodie Kemp won the ball 17 times.

Sam Philp was also one of the Blues’ best, with the 20-year-old finishing with 18 disposals and three goals.

The Blues are 6-3 and entrenched in the top eight.

Setters impacted from both forward and defensive flanks when we were undermanned in 2019 - something's been off with him since the start of last year

Moved on from this game at HT but would have liked to see Philp’s performance and the 3 goals scored + how Willo went & his supposed shift to the backline, though I haven’t liked him there at AFL level, reckon the wing suits him more (started there in the VFL along with Setters).

Setters could still be ok but he needs to bulk up to improve his strength, improve his kicking and marking. Basically everything Kennedy did in the past 18 months.

Dow is a completely different type of player where his real weapon is his speed.

Not sure re Dow. He's very strong through the core. Would have loved to see him put on some size up top and be that power/burst midfielder for us. My thinking is we're keeping him lean due to an evident lack of fitness.

I thought Dow was really good. I hope he gets another crack next week. We did miss Kennedy though - his high marking is important.

Did our VFL have another bye on the weekend?

I thought he was good also but if BamBam is good to go I reckon Paddy misses. Martin hopefully back also. Those two can mark forward and goal. Selection as usual will be interesting.Go Blues .

Who knows, he may be one of those people who struggles to put on muscle mass (conversely look at Fyfe he was a runt when he started out). He might also have natural limitations on how much of a tank he can develop, Walsh being the opposing argument.

AFL is littered with players who dominated underage footy but didn't make the leap, the one that always sits front of mind for me was Jack Watts.

Jack Watts had too much white line fever

I know they're having a shit season but really if they cant beat us with the outs that we have it will be their most embarrassing effort of the whole season. Dramatic? Well run the exercise of who we are missing with Melbourne's list. I doubt Melbourne even beat a semi decent side with their first 5 KPD 6 if you include Jones, #1 ruck and #1 fwd out.

Our list had KPD depth and it is completely blown to smithereens. 1.Weitering, Jones, 2.McGovern, 3.Marchbank, 4.McDonald and 6.Parks were all ahead of Plowman. Young was only ahead of Parks. So we are lining up with 5th and 7th choice defenders against Wright. Then our only actually ready ruckman (that's our list builds fault) is out long term. Then our #1 goal kicker is out.

Seriously. Take out Lever, May, Tomlinson, Petty, Smith, Gawn and Ben Brown out of their side and how would they go? They'd be lining up with Tom McDonald, Majak Daw and probably Daniel Turner as their 3 tall defenders, would have Luke Jackson rucking solo & Weideman would do okay in the Brown role.
