We will struggle defensively with their height if they end up going with Kosi, Lewis, Gunston + resting ruck (McEvoy/Reeves) up forward

If we do bring in the extra defender I would prefer Parks to Plowman as Parks can at least play tall. Plowman terrible above his head for his size and much better suited to playing on ground level players which we have enough coverage in.

Though my prefered option would be Kemp who looked alright playing 3rd tall defence last year. I wonder if we will switch him in the vfl now we are copping injuries in defence.

Kosi won't play. Forward line is working well not sure we would disrupt it. North tried to go tall on us and we completely outran them after half time

we have hawks this week with a solid fwd line, gold coast with no king, port with no dixon and freo with??????? I don't even know what they have. If there was ever a time for our defence to be tested you'd almost argue the next 3-4 games don't pose the most potent threats in terms of forward lines. Not taking any opposition fwd line lightly, but good time to see how Young and Parksy (if required) measure up. Not ideal but next man up

Agree. We lost Jones before the start of the season, and carried in McGovern, Omac and Marchbank with injury prone histories.

Lewis Young was going to be in the team sooner rather than later, and I doubt he doesn’t play every game (pending injury).

We won’t see the Weitering/Omac/Gov combo again.

I am always reluctant to buy the too tall/short arguments. It depends on how the players use it.

In this case, I feel we have lost quite a bit of aerial talent and I would expect Plowman or Parks to be included to maintain defensive balance.

In: Young, Cerra, Plowman (from sub)

Out: McGovern, McDonald, Fogarty

Martin to get a full VFL game, name Dow sub.

Might not be the worst strategy for your lot considering our outs in defence. However like someone said above weather may be a factor.

I liked what i saw from Young in the practice match he played against melbourne and to be honest he took the piss in VFL last week, too good to be playing 2s IMHO. Think he may surprise a few but AFL of course is a different level

Not often you would ever beat a team because you are too tall for them.

Was surprised by how classy he looked by foot.

Initially preferred McDonald as I thought he could play the lockdown role and allow Weitering to rebound off the 2nd tall. But Weitering seems to be playing lockdown on the 1st tall anyway in which case Young might be better as he offers more rebound then McDonald.

With Gov and OMac to miss, it's Fog also out, with Plow (staying on from sub last week), Young, Cerra and Martin in.
Somebody to be the sub from all that lot, possibly Martin.
Out: Gov (inj), OMac (inj), Fog (omitted)
In: Young, Cerra, Martin
Sub: TBD

EDIT: posted before I finished.

Can't see much more than 2 forced and one omission after 2 wins. Apart from who becomes the sub, probably one of the easiest teams to name.

they'd be brave to go that tall with a bit of rain around sunday, not that i trust weather apps these days
And if they don't mark everything, they risk getting killed on the rebound.

Kosi, Lynch or Jeka in were three three I was hoping not to see on the team sheet. I back our defensive system in and think we win this by gaining midfield ascendency and maintaining high efficiency i50 though. If you are reliant on one or two players in d50 to win you games of footy then you’re probably not going to win enough games to make the eight.

Having said that, my point regarding your young talls still stand. I do believe McEvoy’s influences will be attenuated by bringing Pitto back with him.

Someone needs to be the 3rd tall down back in case things get out of hand with Gunston, McEvoy and Lewis. Probably JSOS is the best fit, if Plowman/Parks aren't selected.

My preference would be Plowman, purely from an experience/dependability point of view.

Dont like the idea of JSOS as the third defender, mainly because I can't recall the last time he actually played in defence. Don't think he's trained there recently. Sure he's got the right size and competitiveness, but ultimately if he hasn't trained with the backline group it'll lack synergy.

Not to mention it changes our forward structure which has been working well, JSOS kicked 2 goals last week.

Plowman and Parks have actually trained as defenders and feel like they can do the job.

FFS Mitch.... 3 or 4 weeks...
Unless Young or Parks come on, it's going to be an ongoing issue. Gone from Weiters, Jones and Plow who barely missed any games, to injury prone Gov and OMac, with injury prone Marchy also hoping to take one of those spots.
Hopefully the new systems and team defence, with two way running mids, mitigates the need for a consistent back 2-3 talls.

I would agree, just looking at the extended bench, the only possible explanation is Martin playing as sub, even though it would seem unusual. Kennedy, Cerra and Pittonet are surely locks. If that's the we way go with Plowman as the 3rd defender, I am very fine with that. He's not the best matchup for Gunston, our midfield will dominate enough to make it sufficient.

Nothing too concerning for this week because:
- Weitering obviously goes to Lewis
- Young comes in which we all predicted he would at the start of the week when it was likely Oscar would miss with his back problem and plays on McEvoy when he’s forward
- whilst Gov’s injury is a surprise (happened at training) he wasn’t a great match up for Gunston anyway, so now it’ll just be interesting to see if Voss trusts Plowman to get the job done or sends Silvagni back (where a lot of us have always thought he’d end up).
- Hawthorn have a mobile crafty forward line (Gunston, Wingard, Breust, Moore) so having an extra lock down back like Plowman (or Sos) may be more helpful than an unaccountable interceptor this week
