Do you really trust the VFL to give an even zone spread?
They won't split just Victoria up to their 12 teams. They would also include Tassie (as you suggested), Northern Territory, part of NSW and QLD and anything else that would help sustain the big clubs.

We would get absolutely destroyed if they went to zones.
Yeah it’s no good. On the NRL footy show on Sunday they were heavily debating NRL moving to AFL based draft system…and all were in favour. Seems inevitable for NRL. Teams like the Broncos have consistently strong zones and are always in finals picture, as opposed to the Knights who have a weaker unpredictable zone and rarely in the mix. They have to trade in to get better, but players still want to go to the stronger teams. So it’s the same problem again.
The romantic idea of predominantly local players playing for the crows is beautiful…but zones are the opposite of equalisation.

Except that it’s only “normal” for the go-home factor to mean returning to Victoria.

If not, then the AFL “media-types” kick up a stink as per Rankine.

The one thing they don’t want to do/allow is normalisation of top line players returning to WA or SA.

Thing is though, the club should be embracing all this.

The Vic clubs are normalizing the go home factor but having to share between 9 Vic clubs (not counting North. No one wants to go there)

We can share all the SA go homers between us and Port.

This should really work in our favour.

Not us, but interesting he has not specified a team, just a move back to SA

Interesting he hasn't nominated a club & if true can't argue it's not for family reasons.

As opposed to Kelly who was apparently desperate to get home for family reasons... except ruled out Freo completely & was delayed a year.

Could be wrong but I recall seeing years ago thr th percentage of players for Vic is higher than the ratio for Vic to interstate teams.

Could be wrong as it was a long time ago but it rings a bell - a reason why zones would be tough currently.

???…. “Broncos are always in the finals picture”…

Really.. is that right?.. because I’m a broncos supporter and last I looked the Bronco’s havent played finals in more than 3 years…

And hasnt that blown up in Kelly’s face!… now playing for a bottom dweller… and freo are on the up!

Would actualky rather we keep him..

We have ZERO KPD depth.. none at all..

What happens if one of butts or murray goes down in R1 in 2023 with a knee?..

Borlase?.. 🤮
The I guess we kiss our flag chances goodbye.

Frampton is competing with Doedee, Smith, Worrell Dawson etc not Murray or Butts.

He is not a KPD.

I'd like to keep him if he would accept a 1 year deal, problem is Collingwood are offering multiple years.

You prepared to offer him 3 or 4 years?

Still want to move Billy on. Clear out deadwood etc.

Still need to find out a way to move on some contracted players, too

I don’t get why people want to move on Borlase? He’s a Cat B rookie going into a 3rd year, so unless we have any Cat B replacements lined up (we don’t), we may as well see how he develops next year (that said I have very little confidence he makes it)

given most of the recuiters are based in victoria thats what happens

Victoria has nearly 4 times our population which evens itself out with extra clubs over there. Also Victorian players are more likely to want to return to Victoria than South Australian players wanting to return to South Australia. The draft, trade and FA is a massive advantage for Victorian clubs. The other factor is that the top Vic clubs can get away with paying a majority of their list unders compared to most interstate clubs. This essentially means that most Victorian clubs have a bigger salary cap in practice even though the total cap number is the same.

Having just read "Boys Club" it is abundantly clear commercial interests are no's 1,2 and 3 in priorities of this version of the AFL (diminished commission - CEO rule) so as long as Collingwood, Richmond and one of Carlton/Essendon are up and about and the Swans are good, the rest can live off the dream. It is turning into a very EPL model. The sooner we get our heads around that and work to beat that system the better. Cos it ain't changing. Must play the cards that are unfairly dealt.

The same situation if they went down with a knee with Frampton.

You just play with 1 KPD and try to gamble on adding more intercepting power to work around it.
