That's probably what it will cost considering he's a number 1 pick who's only played 1 year, so has 10 years ahead of him. Those first round picks would probably be the range of one mid-range first rounder and one late-range first rounder.
Should have then our deal.. could og had rachele and a top 5 pick and more...

No cliff. They have good core of young players. If they get JHF this year they will feel well positioned moving forward

Nah, it's coming. They won't be Adelaide/North/WCE/Hawks bad, seeing Marshall/Rozee/Butters but they're due a couple of retooling years as a lot of their core is finishes up.

Agreed, and it takes only one or two key important players to leave to turn the into a basket case.

Amon whilst isn't elite, is still a best 22 player, and if Georgiades pisses off then they will be left in a hole they will struggle to recover from

Take out, Boak, Gray, Dixon, Jonas, McKenzie, Motlop, together with Amon and Georgiades, and all of a sudden they look pretty average if they don't trade anyone of experience or quality in to the team.

With Ken in self preservation mode, 2023 could get ugly and then 2024 onwards, even uglier.

I think that's why we've moved on to Rankine.
I don't think we've "moved on" to Rankine. The Rankine deal has been worked of for years trying to get him home.

JHF would surely be looked at as a we'll try to get it done this year but he's contracted and North will likely be painful about it, as they should. If it all falls apart, get the job done next year.

They aren't that great now and will be losing some of their better players. Mid table

I always thought our trade offer of 3 x first rounders for JHF and change was about showing him how much we rated him even though we 100% knew North would reject.
Yeah potentially, I still think there would be a significant pull for him towards Port if he did come back due to his connection to the club through his Step Dad.

Come on Mutineer instead of doing stupid laugh reacts, perhaps explain how berry is a first round mid (pick 28) when you've questioned if I've actually seen the question?
He was the 2nd pick of the Second round - that's still very early and is a genuine mid.

Even if he came home to Port it's still a positive for us in an obscure way.
SA players coming home does two things.
Firstly, other SA players can see a pathway home and be warmly welcomed for returning.
Secondly, on draft night, non SA recruiters might feel "flight risk" pressure .

Agreed. Gray should have already retired. If he goes around again next year it won't be good. Boak should retire. Charlie Dixon is 31 so I don't know when he'll be done but sooner than later. Jonas is 31, and Motlop has retired. That's a decent chunk of their best 22.

North ask for Rachelle and our first this year for JHF, would you do it?

It's not happening. I mean they will certainly ask the question, that's a sure thing, but they know they're not getting him.

You don't give up elite talent to get elite talent. If it involves a player it will be a B grader or aging gun - neither of which we're flush with.

Rachelle would have to agree to the trade and although he might like to go back to Melbourne he wouldn't want to go to North.

Don’t disagree that they will step back - but it won’t be a cliff like we fell off. It will be like how we used to rebuild - drop to 10-12 and then start competing for finals again.

They will be in that 14-8 bracket for the next decade. Too much talent to really bottom out but never getting picks high enough to get the best players either.

Funnily enough if we grab rankine and somehow can get in a top end mid + a projecting tall with what we hsve, we have a far better foundation to climb right hack up the ladder than they will

What's funnily enough about it?

We've been trash for like half a decade whilst they competed in prelims. That we're having to come up with hypothetical situations where we can have better prospects than them is in itself a deeply concerning commentary on our recruitment.

Don't need a better number 1 ruck ?
I’ve always felt it’s the least critical position, Melbourne last year with Gawn was an outlier. Geelong have never had an elite ruckman since Ottens. Collingwood looking to actively trade their best ruckman.

An elite midfield will do well regardless of the ruck tapping to them.

Could be interpreted as a pretty spiteful move, dropping him for an Adelaide game.

Adds fuel to the speculation the relationship is a bit frosty.
He may not be playing well enough to get picked. The bit I saw of their match last week I didn't notice him on the field. They won't trade him this year imo.

Its more getting a few very top end picks in..guys like thilthorpe, rachele. Hopefully rankine, maybe phillipou to go with a clearly improving fogarty, a high quality player like dawson etc is a quality bunch of players to build a side around.

Port wont get access to the very top end of picks if they are in the 8-14 bracket..they will he what we were for a long time and have to nail later picks or trades to make up for it

Agreed, Richmond won 3 flags with a good solid Ruck in Nankervis. You don't need an elite ruckman to win a flag. You do need elite midfielders though.
