Kaeys is like jarod lyons... good player but just doesn't have every skillset, not the smoothest mover but excels in a few areas...

Is tradeable but has more value to the team than a 3rd rounder... doubt you could get more than that...

We traded lyons because we had a stacked midfield at the time....
Jarrod lyons is twice the player keays is. Lowballing him was a complete f!@k up.

At the moment, it's more likely to hurt the club to try then then benefit it. We're already the youngest/most inexperienced team, and the likelihood of a move like that would just cause the rebuild to stall out (especially as Keays does embody that never say die attitude/toughness the club seemingly wants under Nicks), seeing it's that refusal to get older (a trap Gold Coast fell into for the last decade).

This one is likely to be better to revisit once Ben is out of contract in 2024.

Losing Keays won’t stall our rebuild. We’ve already seen the midfield go perfectly well without him. We get Sloane as a senior half forward next year, if we can get good value for Keays this year, especially if it helps with JHF, then we’d be mad not to do it.

Not really, Lyons is an alright player. It’s not like we’ve missed his presence when he’s left.

Career

Current Season

At same age

Looks like DF Agents can go alright regardless of the team. But yeah, Keays and Lyons have pretty similar output. Probably different strengths

Losing Keays now is premature IMO.

When he first came to the club we were wooden spooners and had slashed our list deeply. Our skills as a team were deserving of a bottom ranking.

Without skills, effort and tenacity is all the club could provide in an effort to be competitive. Keays has proven to be the perfect recruit at that time. Along with several other "effort" players.

We've improved a lot since then and now have multiple players who are adding proper skills. These players have already begun to overtake Benny in their value to the team performance. This will continue but I don't think were yet a mature enough side to discount the value of pure effort. This is Keays strong suit for sure.

If Benny is traded it would only be as part of a great "prize" for us like JHF or Rankine.

I think we'd still miss him in the team for now.

Although there was an absolute minimum offer on the table we didn't so much low ball him as much as we forced him out.

The real travesty is we forced him out only to sell the farm on Gibbs who objectively had the same/lower output.

Slashing our list deeply is an urban myth. The best 22 players that refused our contracts were Keath, JJ and Thor. Thor and JJ had both been dropped in 2019 and we still had Talia and Harto as key backs. The rest of the changes made no difference to our best 22.

We wanted him to be in the Gibbs trade rather than a 1st round pick, Carlton refused any player to be in the deal, which turned out to be to their own detriment in the end.

Seems like a pretty significant change over one year to me.

Can we get JHF, Rankine and keep pick 4 this year?

Happy to use 1st rounder next year, and any other one. Plus all players previously mentioned.

Short answer, no!

If we are making that kind of splash at the trade table then I don't see us picking in the 1st round for the next 2 years.

Which means Bicks will need to start watching a lot more of the U15's league
