Chatter starting up in a few circles about McStay and what the thinking of the Pies is in trying to get him on board. Doesn’t exactly fill a gaping hole and potentially stunts the growth of some of their young players. Let’s get this done and make off like bandits.
Which young key forward or defender is he stunting the growth of?

From what’s been rumoured, Collingwood are going after McStay, one of Hopper or Taranto, and Bobby Hill.

While trying to offload Grundy, and potentially De Goey.

You do have to think if you play for the pies.. Only takes a year and they trade you out for a magic bean

Ollie Henry was the player mentioned today on SEN.

Can’t see McStay impacting Henry’s development.

McStay is a Key Forward, Henry is a high flying medium forward.

If anything, McStay would help Henry’s development, taking the third tall defender.

Only one I can think of would be Nathan Kreuger, though he's not shown enough that you'd base recruiting decisions around him.

There has been a fair bit of talk about Collingwood wanting to bring him in as a defender.
And that some are bemused as to why we are not using him in defense.
Especially as it is the defense that is crumbling at the moment and Dan is the answer apparently.

Hope they’ve told Dan himself that. We know how keen he’s been to play in defence previously…

Could we get Heppell? Would we want him?

Thinking today we need more leadership and poise down back. Not sure if he’s been part of the problem at Essendon though.

He has looked close to done the last 2 years, borderline best 22 for Dons and often looking a liability on field. Would be needing a spot in an already crowded half back line. Not good enough footballer or leader for that role IMO.

Huge danger signs with this 4 year deal for Will Ashcroft.... gives him 2 years on the list with baby brother Levi(2024 draft) before they both head off to a big Melbourne club in the 2026 trade period.

I am terribly concerned about what could happen in 2026, will be on tender hooks until Levi comes out publicly to say he will also be wanting a a 4 year deal straight up. Why the silence from Levi on this matter😡?

I don’t think this would be the motivation for 4 years at all. He has the rare chance to negotiate a 2 year extension with year 3 and 4 being proably between 400-500k each year. He can financially plan around that. If they thought they could trade him and Levi to the same Melbourne club in 4 years time, it’s not going to be made easier then being at the same club? If anything that sort of double blow to the club trading, makes getting them to the same club far harder.

If they were confident about being able to arrange for them to play at the same club together in Melb they would just skip the Father Son thing and look for an opening 6-7 years down the track, but it’s not that important for most brothers by then.

The only really reliable chance they play together, with little stress, like the Daicos brothers do, is with us. If they want to trade to a Melbourne club together after Levi’s 2nd year, their manager would be warning them ‘that manover would be almost impossible to pull off at that time’.

I strongly doubt that is the plan, it would be ensuring he is close to a millionaire by 22. Not many draftees can secure that on draft night.

My post was in jest, I thought it was obvious, I need to refine my posting style a tad more.;)

I thought you were serious, we've had similar posts made in all seriousness before by others. :(

Does it though?
It does allow us to bring in someone like Lohman who might offer better value in the forward line than McStay does currently.
Yep.

Lincoln McCarthy, Joe Daniher, Cam Rayner.
Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Kai Lohmann. + Zac Bailey rotating through is a pretty potent forward set up IMO.

Also would offer more F50 defensive pressure, particularly if Cam can improve his endurance over the coming off season.

With you all the way with Madden, I am a big fan, also I have posted before he lifts to the level, to my eye he plays better in better company.
yes i agree, think there are a couple that play better in the 1's than the 2's. Only knock on Madden is ball deposal but surely that improves with more exposure in the 1's

Should've been in the middle all season in my view along with Prior. I wish he was given the run in middle like Hipwood got in the forward line for last 10 weeks. We'd be laughing by now about our midfield potentially rejuvenated. We always find a way to screw these things up. :(
agree and the worry for me is Dev might request a trade at years end.

Probably also allows someone like Rayner or even Lohmann to play that 3rd tall for us as well (if needed).

Would probably like a bit more flexibility.

Having 5 forwards with no second position and rotating a ruck and midfielders through there makes things a bit tough
