If Darcy Gardiner was to leave and with Marcus Adams a concussion/injury worry we would be seriously short for quality KPD options, would need to get someone in to at least provide depth if Andrews or Payne went down.

I think if Gardiner is leaving it’s very good news for Greene from the VFL team. Could also mean we’re quietly confident about the young talls in our academy over the next couple seasons.

Forgot about Riley Greene, he has been very impressive in the VFL when given the chance, I saw him outside the Gabba one day this season and he is a solidly built unit, didn't look KPD height to my eye though, would be a Gardiner/3rd tall defender type.

Gardiner is an established first team defender and is effectively in his prime. He should generate something.

I feel like we undervalue our players at times.
If we got a late 2nd round pick for Gardiner it would be a steal. Most likely 3rd pick.

I will be interested to see how the Jack Bowes trade plays out?

It's an attractive offer for clubs with space in the salary cap and keen to get another early round pick (7). Clubs like Hawthorn should be all over it. They get a good player - who would easily be in there best 22 and they get pick 7. Do they need to pay him 1.6million over next 2 years? offer him 3 year deal at 1.7 million then pay him 800k next year and 900k (450x2) over the following 2 years.

I was thinking Greene and Arnold would be more likely options, than any player/s we could draft late in this year’s draft.

Unless we’re looking at other teams delisted free agents, after the draft.

Our academy talls for the 2023 draft don’t help us next season, and our lack of depth should we lose Gardiner and/or Adams.

the best academy talls are all 2024 draft, Richardson is the only prospect for next year and he is Shane Mumford style, without the Mumford size.

Did you see Nick Riewoldt having an almight cry about it last night when John Ralph said on the couch that the Saints werent pursuing the Bowes deal.:p

Curious tweet from the Lions:think:Zorko 1 more year???

I'm happy, although I do think the captaincy should be handed over.

And I'll be honest - I'd like to see Zorks HAND it over, not leave it to a vote.

You've done us proud mate and if we made it to the big dance next year, you know full well what the supporters think of you and your legacy.

Be a statesman, not a politician and do the right thing.

The club would obviously know more about the Adams situation but I’m assuming he comes back for next season. Payne replaces Gardiner’s spot in the 22, Greene plays Gardiner’s role in the VFL and could come in, would definitely be giving Lester another year, Arnold can develop as another genuine KPD in the VFL. Would probably like another genuine KPD, I think there’s been a couple mature aged defender mentioned in here before but having Greene, Lester and Arnold all playing in defence for the VFL isn’t too bad imo.

Similarly we (and he?) shouldnt be looking to play every game next year. Look at how Geelong managed Danger across the year. Give game time to kids in different positions but also have Zorko primed for certain big games

If his Achilles is still an issue he has to keep playing to manage that injury. The rests didn't help

Happy for Zorko to go again, and happy to keep him as captain. I do think we need to treat the next 12 months as a hand over period, so we need to be picking our next captain now, bringing them in as VC (if they aren't already) and having them really start leading next year, with Zorks able to start winding back. Wouldnt be against just making the change now though and just letting him play possibly his final year without burden and just letting him focus on his footy.

Not keen to lose Dizzy, still a best 22 player, Payne is perfect right now as the back up option, after him the cupboard is bare. Diz still has that unique ability to play on talls and smalls, think his game is underrated by many. All our defenders are down in form, but that is because they have been let down by our defensive structures. Far too leaky, if we can fix our structures up a bit I think all our defenders can get a significant boost in performance.

I was off Dizzy a bit but I think he really stepped up in the two finals we won. Changed my mind.

I agree, that's my thought too re: footy focus.

And tbf, yes, I know there's a portion of supporters who chafe a bit with him leading the troops - and this is a way for him to go out letting his footy do the talking. Maybe we overlook sometimes just how good he can be.

Yes, he ain't a spring chicken. But up forward or even down back, he still would command a best 22 from almost every other club.

Just let him play footy, assess him purely on that metric next season.

He was our only player to get a coaches vote in our last final... I also think he is the sort of player opposition forwards don't want going to them which is a good sign. You need niggle as well as polish down back. Injury free (big caveat) his ceiling as he enters his prime as a defender is a set-and-forget 'that job is taken care of' which coaches love and his versatility gives us defensive stability coming up against a range of different shaped forward lines.

Are you sure?

(No inside info, just noticed he's sitting on the uncontracted list still.)
Saving the best for last - my son was watching a show called Ballers with the Rock in it on the weekend, hadn't seen it and there was a scene where the NO Saints were showing the love for signing one of the stars of the show with dancers, bands and even wildlife. I suspect we'll be doing something similar for Ryan when its announced that he is being re signed.
