Every trade period, there’s lots of swapping and changing to get the best deals. Brisbane have more need than most this year with their F/S, Gunston, and Dunkley. Therefore extreme deals are needed, and lots of points gathering.

Brisbane to get J. Bowes + 7 + 25 + 34
Gold Coast get T. Berry + 33 (their main focus will be their Rankine trade)

Brisbane get E. Ratugolea + 18 + 36 + 46 + 51 and 54
Geelong get J. Lyons + 7 + 43 + 69 (Lyons is an immediate replacement for Selwood, and 7 gets Jhye Clark in the draft. Also Geelong to pitch in $250,000 for two years to easy the Bowes salary dump. They probably pay Lyon less than Selwood, so the money will be there.)

Brisbane gets J. Dunkley + 37 and 65
Western Bulldogs get 15 + 18 ( the two first round picks they are demanding)

The J. Gunston and D. McStay trades would just about cancel each other out points wise, whether there were trade swaps or compensation.

Brisbane end up with 25, 34, 36, 37, 44, 46, 51, 54, 65 = 3545 points banked
If W. Ashcroft is pick 1 and J. Fletcher is pick 10 = 3417 points needed
of course that improves dramatically if North Melbourne don’t bid on Ashcroft and Fletcher slides a bit further.

Brisbane‘s gains are Ashcroft, Fletcher, Dunkley, Gunston, Ratugolea, and Bowes (with a salary dump reduction of $250,000), and not having to use future picks or go into points debt.

Gold Coast end up with 31, 33, 52, 67, 70, T. Berry who replaces Rankine, and what ever they get for Rankine.

Geelong end up with 7 (to be use to get J. Clark in the draft), 43, 60, 69, and Lyons, but pay some of Bowes salary.

Western Bulldogs end up with 11, 15, 18, and 29.

Brisbane may even look to be involved further into the draft if they think Ah Chee, Sharp, Answerth or Cockatoo hold any currency, despite being guaranteed Ashcroft and Fletcher.

From the guy suggesting a trade than involves 2 players and 8 picks…

Is that an example of armchair expertise

How do we get the players we want?

I think if you're going to post trade hypotheticals like you're a host of Trade Radio, you need to be less sensitive when people react poorly to it. So maybe chill a little and let's all just move on.

Also we've managed to avoid the need for a thread for trade hypotheticals for a few years now, let's keep up that streak!

Sorry, not swing, defensive counter punching.

Fair enough.

I see Dev playing wing next year. Covers the ground and is very disciplined. Equally, will be a contested bull when stoppages are on his side of the ground.

Robertson - Dunkley - Berry
Oscar - Neale - McCluggage
Rotations: Ashcroft, Rayner, Bailey
I see Dev as an important player in our side in 2023. He was one of our most important players in the Melbourne game where he played as a defensive inside mid in the first half against Oliver and then again as a defensive winger in the second half. You don’t have to get multiple possessions to be an important player in our side not every midfielder needs to get multiple touches to be effective. Robertson was important to our side in the latter part of the year because he could do something Lyons could not do and that is pressure the oppositions best players. He appears to relish contesting the ball, pressuring the opposition and tackling. All these attributes are important in big games. For whatever reason our side did not seem to pressure opposition sides when the opposition were transitioning from defence to attack and many sides moved the ball with ease from the backline and scored multiple goals against us. We need to now develop a game plan that does not allow sides to score freely against us it was our Achilles heal against many sides this year. To do this we need faster defensive players and midfielders like Robertson in our side. I think Robertson has a massive upside to his game with his main weakness being his disposal which needs to be tidied by up. Our side can no longer rely on kicking the long ball up to the forward flank hoping that we win the contested possession in a stoppage and then once gain moving the ball forward.

I don't think Dev is anywhere near the class of Ling or Kirk.
Heh. Less class than those two battlers-made-good would make him Noel Mugavin with an awkward kick!

When we were getting badly beaten, Dev one of the few to still really crack in.

He had 17 touches plus game high 10 tackles. One of our best.

Really stiff to spend a large part of the year in the 2s, regularly in the best couple in the 2s, and had a really good finals series.

He is only 21.
Spot on, Mav.

I was actually a bit ho-hum about Dev until a couple of months back. Had my 'road to Damascus' moment during the VFL game against GC when the side was hit by injuries and he put in a super-human effort that nearly lifted us across the line.

Is he going to be a world-beating footballer? Probably not; but he does have, in spades, some ingredients that are in short supply in our midfield as a whole: work rate both ways, fierce desire at the contest and leadership. Also think he has better than average footy smarts and all.

Interesting that Martinson chose Ling and Kirk as comparisons. Two good-ordinary footballers who ended up making wonderful captains. Personally, I could envisage Dev forging a similar a career.

Really hope we hang on to him.

He showed winning the Larke medal in u18 champs he can find the footy. In the champs he accumulated 119 possessions to beat the record held previously by Sam Walsh.

That record is now held by one W. Ashcroft. Who also won a Larke medal.
So if we do better in 2023 it'll be the Larkes ascending.

This s* boils my blood! If we were 'a very long way off' the top teams, yet we beat Sydney and Collingwood in H&A season, beat Melbourne and Tigers in elimination finals, that leaves one team, The Cats. How exactly is it that we're so far off the top teams???
Boiling your blood is what it's meant to do. Barrett's Sliding Doors is a troll article containing "hot takes" designed to get people talking about him and spreading him across the internets. There is zero thought put into any of it.

Yeah I was getting frustrated about the absolute bullshit narrative about how we're so 'far away' despite beating 5/7 of the other top 8 teams, although now with all the Fagan stuff it feels less of an issue.

In the end, we either prove them wrong or keep getting close without going further. I suspect a fit Lions best 22 will be the best in the league next year if given the chance, though.

Out of the final 4 teams we beat Sydney and Collingwood early in the season but unfortunately ran into a red hot Geelong it’s massive reason Purple loses accountability when talking about teams
