They did and he does.

I don't think Dev is anywhere near the class of Ling or Kirk. Nor has the physical presence.

He's a good honest player with some upside but Neale ,Clug, Dunkley are classes above.

No knock except people seem to have such high expectations , unwarranted on what I've seen.
You are correct he is not in the class of players you have named, but IMO has shown enough. I see no reason with continual support by the coaches he could not get to the level McClug is currently at. I just do not know how he fits in with the inclusion of Ashcroft (who gradually moves into the midfield over the year). Importantly I wonder with the new inclusions, Matho showing a little (in the eyes of the coaches) and of course Lyons, Dev would have to be thinking about his options.

I see Dev as an important player in our side in 2023. He was one of our most important players in the Melbourne game where he played as a defensive inside mid in the first half against Oliver and then again as a defensive winger in the second half. You don’t have to get multiple possessions to be an important player in our side not every midfielder needs to get multiple touches to be effective. Robertson was important to our side in the latter part of the year because he could do something Lyons could not do and that is pressure the oppositions best players. He appears to relish contesting the ball, pressuring the opposition and tackling. All these attributes are important in big games. For whatever reason our side did not seem to pressure opposition sides when the opposition were transitioning from defence to attack and many sides moved the ball with ease from the backline and scored multiple goals against us. We need to now develop a game plan that does not allow sides to score freely against us it was our Achilles heal against many sides this year. To do this we need faster defensive players and midfielders like Robertson in our side. I think Robertson has a massive upside to his game with his main weakness being his disposal which needs to be tidied by up. Our side can no longer rely on kicking the long ball up to the forward flank hoping that we win the contested possession in a stoppage and then once gain moving the ball forward.
Yes been calling for him to get more games this year, and I am also bullish. Cannot be easy coming in for a few AFL games and then being dropped, only to be called up again at various stages. I agree with your proposition we need faster defensive players. With that in mind I do not believe Rich should be a lock for 2023.

How long before Compensation picks get announced after a free agency trade?
Has McStay actually nominated Collingwood? I didn't think so. Until a contract is agreed upon and signed, there can be no assessment of compensation.

Yes I agree about your observation on Rich but gee he is great if he has the ball. Only two years ago he was All Australian with the most metres gained by any defensive player. He was a powerhouse half back flanker for us and at the top of his game. I don’t know what happened after that ? We prefer to use Kiddy Coleman now who also has a better defensive aspect to his game. Most sides seem to target Rich now and use his lack of speed and defensive accountability to their advantage by trying to bring him up the ground and run through him with a quick transition into the forward line. I am sure the coaching staff are aware of this. I wonder if we can use him off the bench and use him as an offensive wingman ? This way he can look for deep forward targets with long flat passes and use our three pronged tall forward line.

Josh Jenkins (Adelaide) just mentioned on Trade Radio, that we offered him a 6 year deal at the end of 2016.

Amon compensation apparently likely to be a band 3 so mcstay would be at best 34

I don't know if he was carrying an injury or at his age has 'hit the wall' but definitely appeared slower this year. Although our offensive weapon, playing in the backline must be a focus on defence, and as you have rightly pointed out gets exposed badly with the quick transition, and fair to say we are not blessed with a lot of pace across the other defenders so we do get exposed. My fear is that Zorko also starts playing back this year and extends his career beyond 2023.

That record is now held by one W. Ashcroft. Who also won a Larke medal.
This is the interesting conundrum so far - why Dev isn't getting more of the ball.

Is it purely because he has either tagged or played half forward? Maybe.

A development coach who worked with reckoned he was not a particularly hard worker. And above all he needed cleaner hands. At U18 level you get more time, can afford a fumble, can recover and get a stat. At AFL no such chance.

I thought it was an interesting observation. If so he should trail Lachie Neale all pre season.

Watch us get completely shafted on the McStay compo. They'll make up some on the fly ruling that we are bringing in players like Dunkley and it'll need to be reflected in our compensation.

Based on his rumoured contract, I reckon it's generally looked like either band 3 or 4 based on previous, recent examples.

EDIT: Amon confirmed as band 3 (pick 27)

With the 5 year contract McStays getting we should get a second too, surely, but who knows...

Won't McStay compo be wiped by Gunston coming to us as a FA?
Could be wiped out or down graded yes. I think we are likely to trade for him. Hawks won't get any compo from him either, as they have Amon. So literally a token trade works for both parties.
