Personally, I think the smartest move for Dev would be to stay at the Lions for the next 12 months and then reevaluate. Look at his role and position in the side and then make a decision. Easy for me to say though! Would hate to lose him. I certainly wouldn’t straight swap Kelly for him, who WC decided to spend so much on. They could have had Dev at #16 if they kept that pick.

He can get games at WC playing his preferred role rather than being played out of position and being in danger of being dropped each week. If I were him I would probably leave.

List spot and a spot in the midfield pecking order

Pretty sure we'll still have four open spots for the draft even bringing in Bowes. Midfield pecking order is something I hadn't considered but even so if Dev wants to stay I'd be happy to let the year play out and see who's able to seize the spot in the 22 and then assess at the end of 23.

Whiting on the roar deal was adamant Bowes wants to play midfield. Moving on Dev might encourage him to choose us

If Dev wants to stay knowing he will be fringe best 22 and he’s willing to take on that challenge I don’t believe we can trade him. Players have obviously taken unders for us to have the cap room we do and that kind of loyalty has to be a two-way street and that means not trading guys that want to stay.

Having said that I’m still all for the Bowes deal if we can get it done, if both players choose to be at the Lions next season knowing the situation around how hard it is to get into the 22 then that can only be a good thing for the club.

With Lewis Taylor and Tom Cutler coming to the end of their career this season, and McStay joining Aish to resume their career elsewhere, I am little nostalgic for that that 2013 AFL Draft.

Obviously coming on the back of the go-home fiasco there was a lot of hope it was the start of a new phase. Along with Nick Robertson, Jonathan Freeman and of course, the very unlucky Justin Clarke, it was a big haul for us. Ultimately we had a long road ahead before positive change happened.

Makes me pretty happy Darcy Gardiner re-signed.

The Bowes + 7 situation does muddy the waters obviously. That would solve all our points / Dunkley trade conundrum without dipping into next year.

But yeah, if that’s not an option I’d hate to see us kick Dev out if he is keen to stay and earn a place. Besides most of us rating him, doesn’t exactly help the culture amongst the group.

LOL! Purple saying that the Lions will have to find 3,000 points to match a bid on Ashcroft at pick 1... David Noble then set him straight about the 20% discount and they will only have to find 2,400 points.

Purple then says- "Oh I wasn't aware of that", FMD LOL! :rolleyes:would of thought a supposedly leading footy journalist would have known that.

Heh. Less class than those two battlers-made-good would make him Noel Mugavin with an awkward kick!

Spot on, Mav.

I was actually a bit ho-hum about Dev until a couple of months back. Had my 'road to Damascus' moment during the VFL game against GC when the side was hit by injuries and he put in a super-human effort that nearly lifted us across the line.

Is he going to be a world-beating footballer? Probably not; but he does have, in spades, some ingredients that are in short supply in our midfield as a whole: work rate both ways, fierce desire at the contest and leadership. Also think he has better than average footy smarts and all.

Interesting that Martinson chose Ling and Kirk as comparisons. Two good-ordinary footballers who ended up making wonderful captains. Personally, I could envisage Dev forging a similar a career.

Really hope we hang on to him.
Any post that uses 'road to Damascus' and mentions Mugavin is top notch.

Which young players are Out of Contract? If Bowes comes in Sharpie probably gets looked at by other clubs because Ashcroft more than like starts on a wing much like Walsh did who he is likened too at AFL level

Would Sharp have much interest? He doesn’t seem to be setting any houses on fire at vfl level.

IF… I was a leading journalist on Trade Radio

THEN… I should probably know the rules.

No one would want Harry Sharp, his pick worth would be out of the range of draft picks that get you points anyway.
Maybe if he was delisted next year, he might try his hand back at athletics again and represent Australia.

You never know, we could see him represent Australia at the 2032 Olympics in Queensland, and be known as “former Brisbane Lions player” Harry Sharp at the beginning of his track or marathon events 🏃🏻‍♂️ :smallfooty:

Give him time. Easy to forget he only just graduated high school last year.

I don't think it will be as simple as Bowes + 7. I think Gold Coast will definitely want pick(s) back and probably a first rounder.

Bowes + 7 for our pick 15 and a later swap of picks seems to me where the trade will land.
