Re Dev, we barely had injury or form issues (til this year with Lyons where we kept the faith) which cost him getting a game in his preferred position. When called upon he has carried out his role well most times.

Obviously we rated him as a mid in his draft year given we live traded up to get him, then gave him a round 1 debut in 2020. He has shown a knack for bobbing up and kicking a goal, so that half forward with midfield minutes is the best bet. Based on wage and upside, I’d be keeping him over Lyons.

Mathieson being picked before him this year was interesting, but you have to reward consistent form in the twos I guess.

I’m against trading anyone with the leadership qualities and professionalism of Dev (unless it’s a last resort circuit-breaker to get Dunkley) - all he needs is a consistent run at senior level to be a very solid AFL player.

Why not? Up to Dev to be honest to become a best 22. Only he can hold himself back. Injury, bench spots, even starting is not out of the question.

Because it probably relies on him getting consistent senior games to see the improvement required to earn his spot, like a Ben Keays situation.

And like Ben Keays his spot is as a first string midfielder. He doesn’t have the ability to compete with the other part time mids

agree Dev improves with consistent AFL games and it is almost certain he won't get first crack with the proposed ins for 2023.

I'm not a fan of the club chasing Bowes in exchange for Dev. I believe Dev will be a much better player than Bowes will ever be. It seems very mercenary to me, when it's not really the player we want but the 7th pick that comes with him. A waste of a list spot and salary cap.

However, if we could use Tom Berry’s move as part of the deal then normalise his contract over an extra 2yrs I could be tempted. He could be good depth over that time.

Bowes himself has to look at the opportunities he will get at his next club. He won't be a walk up start at many of the clubs that have shown interest. If he wants to play Afl he must see he would struggle to crack it at Geelong or even here at the Lions. North or Essendon seem much better options for him. I doubt he will select us.

Dev's future here looks fine to me. Another big preseason and I think he will easily surpass Lyons in the pecking order. I can't see us keeping Lyons past his current contract. His injury problems and lack of pace and run will see him drop out of favour. We looked so much quicker without him. Dev is a great kid, we hustled up the draft to get him. He has leadership qualities, determination and a hardness we need going fwd.

If Dev stays he could very well find a place on the wing even though it is not his natural position
He has been thrown out on the wing before without standing out
However his last half on the wing v Demons in the SF was quite good

Wing was a weak spot for us in 2022.
Berry was the consistant wing, but the other wing + bench wing spot was never a settled best 22 spot
Maybe Ashcroft gets a go but that would also be a change for him

I don't think it will be as simple as Bowes + 7. I think Gold Coast will definitely want pick(s) back and probably a first rounder.

Bowes + 7 for our pick 15 and a later swap of picks seems to me where the trade will land.

Nah mate the word is they’ll take whatever you give them for it, it’s more about the salary dump than it is any return value

Yes, all the excitement across one third of the AFL comp about potentially getting Bowes is more about acquiring pick 7. Bowes it seems is almost treated as the steak knives.

I don't think it's dawned on most people that it's highly likely that the Suns will want a pick(s) back in return and also the 'cost' to your club's salary cap of acquiring Bowes.

If reports are correct, he's owed about $1.6m to $1.7m over the next two years from his current contract with the Suns. If you take that on and negotiate another 2 years on top of that at say $450k per year (he may think he's worth $500k) then that is going to cost clubs around $2.6m over the next 4 years at an average of $650k per year. That's a hefty price and commitment for the next 4 years for him.

To put that in perspective, we have allegedly offered Dunkley $700k to $750k per year.
