So far I'm really happy with they way we've gone about it thru this trade/draft period. I don't think we're done yet either.

Having a look at our list, knowing 3 mids, a fwd and young White are coming in, I still think we are a tall kpp short. I'm wondering how Adams has pulled up with his extended concussion problems. Are they still ongoing? Another head knock and he could potentially miss the season. It might be a good idea to line up another tall for depth.

We have cleared the decks pretty well, I'm not sure how many list spots are available but does anyone else think we may be having a look at some delisted free agents to sure up depth to have a real tilt at the flag in 23. I think there's been some handy players delisted. Someone like Oscar MacDonald would be good back up for Adams should he or another tall go down long term. Stocker, Narkle, would be OK but I don't think we need any more mids. Maybe a small fwd?

Anyone else had thoughts along these lines?

Mightly Lions said Adams is no worries for 2023 :)

The great thing about Gunston is that he provides us with defensive insurance. He's played as an intercepting defender very successfully at points of his career. If we're running short on talls down back, he's an option for us. I think we need to keep developing Fullarton's flexibility to play in defence and I also think Lester is underrated as a "break glass in case of emergency" option. Alongside Payne, that gives us 4 reasonable options should we have some availability issues down back.

Goodo, happy he's all good at the moment. Although as we've seen over the years with Brown, Clarke, Frost, and Maguire that another knock or reoccurrance of symptoms can rub a player out quickly. I'd lean towards some form of backup and that backup needs to be better than Lester or Fullerton. I think Oscar MacDonald would fit nicely.

OK, I had thought Gunston had spent some time down back but wasn't sure. All good then. Eases my mind re tall def depth. Lester OK in dire straights but I don't share your confidence with Fullerton. His final year I'm sure. Should see Lane and H Smith overtake him next season hopefully.

I'm not big on Fullerton either, but clubs will have seen what Geelong do with Blicavs. Sure, it took a long time to get there, but his versatilty is not a bad thing to have I guess.

Maybe Fullerton can plug a hole here n there but not over a 6-8 week stretch or thru a finals campaign. I can see how a player that you're describing could have a real role to play in the team. I can't see Fullerton reaching a level, across yet another discipline, good enough to earn that spot.

The ressies also finished the season with a lack of height in defense. They certainly could have used the height in the finals.

I'm just pondering the possibility that if Adams cops a head knock and one of the other 3 tall def was out for 6-8 weeks, I'd have much more confidence in Oscar MacDonald, for example, stepping up. He also gives the ressies experience.

If we were looking at a cpl of delisted free agents to sure up depth, MacDonald would be my first pick. And to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, I'd pick up Jarrod Brander. Recently deleted by the Swans from West Coast. He's someone tall enough to play both ends, and has done, also a running wing role if needed. He's still young, I'd take a gamble on him.

If we really want another defender I'd rather try out Ethan Phillips, who won this year's VFL award for best young player.

Brander would be a no from me.

Would there be any delisted free agents you would consider picking up? What role would you see them playing? What holes do they fill on our list?
Me?

The only two who have interested me so far are Oscar MacDonald and Sydney Stack.

But other posters have already mentioned them.

Fletcher and Ashcroft add to the Wing Sharp Ah Chee Berry Suitcase all very capable wingmen
Also can give some time to players like Answerth and Lohmann on the wing as well, however they would be more suitable in their preferred positions IMO if they got selected in the AFL side, rather than full-time minutes on the wing.

I reckon we have the wing position covered fine.

We have a very deep midfield already.

My starting midfield would be:
R: Oscar McInerney - Lachie Neale - Josh Dunkley
C: Will Ashcroft - Hugh McCluggage - Dev Robertson

My best 2023 team then had Berry and Ah Chee off the bench; so 4 capable wingers.

Then Prior an emergency.

So Dev and Will neither of which have played a full game on the wing should be good enough to push for a premiership?

I think we're a very good flag chance next season. There are a few players that need to step up.
Firstly, Daniher has had his areas of improvement well publicised. All fair enough. Hoping his shoulder surgery has gone perfectly and he regains pain free movement in his shoulders.
Lyons is the next that needs to take a good look at himself. Some real pressure for him to hold his spot. Gotta get his groins right, he will need to be fitter than he ever has been. Drop a few kilos, be able to run further for longer. Get his inside work back to the standard it was. If he can do that and compete n contribute more, he adds so much value to the team.
Rich n Zorko had down seasons and have certainly the ability to bounce back. Maybe last season for both, can see them being managed at times, but none will be better motivated than these two I reckon.

I think we have a very well balanced squad. I'd like another tall but still balanced. If we have a good run with injuries, move the ball better, quicker, I think we're a real shot.
