Interesting trade. I wonder if the AFL suggested to us that we needed a future fourth round pick so we acquired one. Or maybe we only plan to take 5 picks to the draft? Another pick swap coming? Who knows...

Very interesting. We no longer have enough points for Ashcroft in the event he goes at pick 1.

Reckon GWS have given us a heads up that they aren't bidding on him there. Not sure why else we would have made this trade.

I'd assume it's because we won't have the free list spot to take that pick to the draft.

I think this might be on the cards.

Plus we can always shuffle picks around as needed on the night.

While the AFL dont technically allow it, Im certain there would be a wink wink deal here. GWS dont have picks that will be affected and wont see the need. So I think we have a clear idea on where Ashcroft will be bid on. Less clear on the next pick though...

There was a comment during trade period about how we were looking at our points in next year's draft. I would imagine we are looking at Ashcroft taking out this draft, and 2023 draft being used to match points for Fletcher.

I would assume we will balance our points a bit and have some trade options set up so we can pivot as needed come the draft night and where names are read out.

Seems like we won’t have the list spots, so make sense to just move it into next year.

Also note that we didn’t have a future 4th prior to this trade. This will now give us the ability, if required, to move 2 of the 3 future 3rd rounders to match Fletcher, instead of taking the defecit off our Future 2nd.

pretty sure we only have 2 main list spots left
gone McStay, E Smith, T Berry and Robbo.. in Gunston and Dunkley.
3 not signed Fullarton, McFayden and Lester we have to delisted
Although still only give us 5 spots

Cox and Uosis where rookies. Looks like we use one of these for Darryl McDowell-White as Cat B
Another son of a gun: Lions set to add third father-son Darryl McDowell-White jnr (afl.com.au)
Maybe one of the three unsigned move to a rookie.. We have to de list and redraft them again now.
Take a chance like they did on Greenwood.

I believe we don't get to choose which pick to take our points off. My understanding is the points come off the highest pick first.

Former Cat Nakia Cockatoo among three Brisbane Lions axed, set to get lifeline (afl.com.au)

Cocky and Lester delisted although said we rookie or pickup
McFayden sadly let go hope he gets a chance elsewhere
Nothing on Fullarton

I think Cat B sits outside the standard list spots?

We have 5 spots now (McFadyen, Cockatoo, Lester, and 2 spots open from trade) with Fullarton to be decided.

Correct we don’t choose, it’s simply taken off the corresponding round the following next year.

We can potentially trade a combination of our future picks after matching the Ashcroft bid (it would have to be 3rd rounders or later, as we need to still hold a full set of pick except the first round)
This would see us accumulate points in this draft again, at the cost of our future third rounders. Potentially avoiding us going into deficit at all.

I'm pretty sure they need to be properly removed from the list in order for us to replace them (temporarily) with draft picks, in which case we'd need to redraft them in one draft or another (or maybe sign them as DFAs, not sure if you can do that with your own ex-player).
To add to this, to re-sign them as a delisted free agent, I believe they have to nominate for a draft, National or PSD.

If they nominate for the National draft, we can redraft them with our late picks, after matching Ashcroft and Fletcher.

But we also open ourselves up to another team drafting players we haven’t committed to redrafting in the rookie draft.

We’ve already traded our future first round pick, so even if we don’t have enough points this draft, to match Ashcroft, we can go in to deficit next year. So it’s not like we’re protecting a future first round pick.

Trading in a future 4th round pick gives us the full set of later future picks, to allow us to trade a future 3rd round pick on draft night, for a pick in this year’s draft, if the opportunity arises.

It also adds to our future points value, thus increasing how much deficit we can go in to at the draft.

Opposition clubs will know exactly at what pick we can match a bid on Fletcher, on draft night (this does depend on where the Ashcroft bid comes), so if a team bids on Fletcher before we can match, it means they genuinely want him.

I expect a bid on Fletcher to come at the very first pick we’re able to match him on, to wipe us out of both drafts.

And this prevents us from being able to trade back in to this year’s draft, as all our future picks are committed to matching our draft deficit.

What about our picks going back to the end of 2022 draft but still giving us some points potentially? Wonder if that skews Fletcher calculations for other clubs?
