I think people under play the aerobic capacity required to play Gaelic football. Yes, it’s not professional football (is it still not?) but those lads run and they run all day. Different running requirements to AFL which is more repeat sprints.

This is in danger of becoming the new Operation thread ...

McKenna would be a great pick up, would obviously add something we don’t necessarily have. Was clearly AFL standard, good age to come in and have an impact for us immediately.

As a quick running, creative type, I don’t think a Ross Lyons team would be that high on most peoples preference list. Port Adelaide feels like the main competition, hopefully we get the same result as Dunkley.

Just a few questions regarding McKenna.
How long would it take for him to get his afl touch back? A season, half a season, would preseason be enough?
What's the likelyhood of him reaching his best form again? 2.5yrs is quite a while out of the game. At his very best he is a walk up start in the best 22, can he get there again, for how long?
Will home sickness become an issue again? Is this a long or short term proposition?
Could he end up like Cockatoo, plenty of ability but passed by our developing youth, ending up as useful depth?

If Rich has signalled to the club that 23 maybe his last season, McKenna could be a handy pick up. But like others here I'm meh about him.

Even if he did became a depth player for us, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for us and our premiership hopes.

Yes I want him to be a best 22 player for us (if we sign him) just like everyone else we get from the trade and draft table, but 45 players don’t go into 22 sadly and mature players like Cockatoo, Mathieson, Lester, Fullarton & Payne are such as important at the club, to help provide solid experience in our side when injuries do sadly occur in our AFL side.

Just look at Fullarton replacing Daniher in that SF this year for example, even though he didn’t kick a goal in that game, he provided experience in our F50 set-up and without that, we most likely would have lost that game I reckon (just like what happened in 2021).

Personally though, if he does end up becoming a depth player for us in 2023 but then breaks into our 2024 side full-time (replaces Rich) that would be a positive pick-up for us long-term.

There is always a risk/doubt with players such as Cockatoo and McKenna but I am more certain McKenna will become a starting 22 then I was with Cockatoo. I was hoping Cockatoo could produce his best, still am, but it is fading.

I'm afraid Nakia is just a mirage. People get fixated on the one flashy thing he does a game - a burst out of defence or a jarring tackle - but ignore the rest which is where he just plainly struggles to get involved for long periods of the game. Bucket loads of potential, but even in his junior days he didn't find enough of the ball. It was really an amazing game in a futures game (IIRC) that saw him jump up the draft rankings in his draft year. If he had a bit more height he could be a handy key defender and I think he's looked his best while playing in defence, but he doesn't seem to get played there enough. Plus, maybe due to his injuries he doesn't quite seem to have the place he once did.

McKenna, if played on a wing, could be exactly what we need.

I think it's a lack of 'white line fever' that holds Cocky back. Just doesn't want to take control of a game which he has the ability to do. Had excuses coming back from injuries but he's played enough now to really step up

Can we sign McKenna at anytime or does this have to go through a pre season draft pick ?
We will want it to be after the draft so we can take the pick to the draft.
We may be able to pick him up in the rookie draft but then we also run the risk of another team picking him up I think.
Because I believe he needs to nominate for the National draft to be picked up as a rookie in the rookie draft so lots of opportunity for other to pick him up?
Maybe dlanod could confirm?
Most likely the PSD for us.

He should have the fitness and hopefully the touch from Gaelic.
The main issue would be the durability to stand the more physical nature of AFL

For those keen on McKenna, highlights from his best year 2019

Some very exciting stuff there, but also some sloppy kicking.
Love the run, the team is certainly missing some of that.
