So it seems the best we can hope for is a mediocre old ruck in Grundy and a defender in McKay who doesn't seem any better than what we have already? We need a ruck, but Grundy keeps being dropped to the reserves wherever he plays and he's 30. Feels like we're getting another Hickey, only with a sense of entitlement. I don't see Grundy improving us by a lot. And I think defence is the least of our worries. I wouldn't be upset if McKay fell through.

I don't think Sheldrick and Roberts are quite ready to step in as top dogs, so I think a proven big bodied midfielder who can win clearances is the most pressing need, but this seems unlikely. A KPF would also be nice, but it's obvious the club have gone all in on the current trio of talls and are hoping Buller develops into something, so probably won't even consider another forward. I'm getting ready for another disappointing trade period.

Happy to take on the negotiations, May procure James Jordan as a set of steak knives as a sweetener!

get that Fritch prick so he stops kicking goals against us

Looking forward to the melts when it is a first

But but O'Sullivan!
No way we it’s a straight swap for 12. In the unlikely instance we give up our round 1 pick, Melbourne would need to throw in a later pick ie set of steak knives.

I'm not saying that it isn't but there's no such thing as fair anyway.

Dawson being out of contract and seeking a trade to a club that finished below us on the ladder gave both of those parties leverage against us.

Heeney being paid about $900K despite not living up to his output also wasn't about fairness, it was about leverage. McKay is in the exact same boat right now with rival suitors circling him.

Melbourne having a number of desperate clubs eager for their contracted ruckman gives them leverage.

AFL players having the right to refuse a trade gives them leverage.

It's about getting the deal done and sometimes you get fleeced at the negotiation table to get it done. I don't want pay our first round pick for Grundy either, and neither do the Swans.

But I do want a premiership, however, and so do the Swans. A top quality ruckman that doesn't break the bank supports that endeavour but sometimes you do have to pay in other ways.

Let's see what happens.

We don't need to get fleeced. That is the whole point.

But at least we have reached a point of agreeing that pick 12 would be a fleecing.

Melbourne aren't going to hold Grundy against his will given all the circumstances. We don't need to even consider a deal like that.

Draft picks are there to help you win a premiership. I know it's difficult to imagine ways to use them that achieve this besides stockpiling young men you read about but managing your salary cap and timing your window are two factors just as important imo

This!!

We don't need another young skinny kid who is years away

If not for Grundy I hope we trade our first pick either way

Pick 28/9 whichever one we have is fair value and represents what Melbourne paid for him.

That’s enough for an almost 30yr old big fella.

Also considering Melbourne have shafted him, they need to do the right thing.

hahahahahahahaha ... yeah, i'm sure that'll factor into the club's thinking

It's really a matter of perception, our first round pick could turn into another Stephens, Zak Jones or Dean Towers. None of whom would/could influence your next premiership assault. Does a ready made ruckman at a moneyball price cost us our first round pick? In a worst case scenario, yes he does because our heir apparent until such a deal can be done is Peter f**king Ladhams.

It could also turn into Patrick Cripps or Zak Butters.

But that is all beside the point.

The point is we don't have to give up a first round pick to get Grundy. We can still get him and keep our first pick.

Melbourne aren't going to hold Grundy against his will if we offer something similar to what they gave up to get him. I don't know how else to explain this.

As long as we offer something in the 25-30 range, he will be our player.

So why offer pick 12 when we don't need to?! It doesn't make any sense at all.

Connors sports control half of the good players in the league, they alone would ensure a pick in the 20s was enough to get Grundy to a team where he actually plays.
