Can someone please explain what you see in Boyd and why you want him in the 22?

The winning streak came when I was blind so I understand I've missed an enormous amount of nuance and not being at games I miss a lot of the system structure that gets missed on television. He played in half of those games then copped the suspension.

I know he's gutsy AF and can play much taller than his actual height. However, at this stage he has missed a lot of senior level football juices of suspension and then not coming immediately in

So to those putting him in their 22, what makes him an inclusion after missing the end of the season and only managing 8 senior games this year?

Note: I'm not bagging him or you for putting him in. Simply curious and wanting good insight.
I mean, his entire game screams AFL attributes.

Quick, defends well and most importantly, extremely good user of the ball. Would be in our best five kicks.

Hasn't been used as a distributor much yet, instead being given lockdown assignments, but I really think he will show his best when allowed to be more of a receiver exiting the backline.

We could use a lockdown small defender - a few nasty small forward types coming up.

Does anybody think that dropping Pitto was a bit of a ruse, when he was just resting his troublesome knee?

If he had been rested, the opposition would be planning for his return from day 1.

This way, they won't know until Thursday night prior

I know it probably achieves nothing but...

PS. For mine

I figure we have 5 back locks (Weitering, Newman, Saad, Gov, Kemp), and 4 others fighting for the last 2 spots.

The argument for Boyd would be his toughness and ability to lock down, and then his pace and good disposal. If not for the suspension, you would assume he'd be locked in the team.

Then it depends on how we see those other 3, and who we want in our back.
Cincotta has been really good, but has been sore/tired and tailed off quite a bit the last couple of weeks.
Marchy would be the most talented, but is coming from a long way back, and changes the mix, taller, less pace and attacking skill.
Then there's Fish. Had a couple of really good games when he came back into the team in the backline. Gets the most possessions of the 4, is the most attacking, but the least defensive. Do you trust him not to make some catastrophic mistakes under finals pressure? Not sure that I do.

Wickzki Boyds had a few moments where he's been the bacon saver on an opposition quick break. Ends up the deepest guy one out on someone taller and has managed to bring it to ground and delay possession until help arrives.

Basically he's tenacious and I believe cinc and Saad have played freer with him in the team. Fwiw I don't rate his kicking and ball use nearly as much as most but I probably rate his defensive input for the team more than most. Would love him back in the squad.

Segway into my predicted/biased starting team....

Fb: Boyd Weitering Newman
Hb: Cincotta McGovern Saad
C: Docherty Walsh Acres
Hf: Fogarty Mckay Cuningham
FF: Owies Curnow Martin
R: Pitto Cripps Cerra

I/C: Kemp, Cotters, Hewett/Kennedy, TDK

Sub: Hollands/Kennedy/Mots/Hewett

I think Dow and Fisher will struggle to make this team and Kennedy might surprise a few forgetting how good he was going just before injury.

7 defenders, 3-4 wing rotations, hopefully plenty of forward pressure.

We're not dropping TDK

One thing that stands out from that back 6 is:

  • Boyd - mature age rookie selection in the MSD
  • Cincotta - mature age rookie selection in the SSP
  • Newman - pick 35 in the 2015 Rookie Draft
  • Saad - pick 25 in the 2015 Rookie Draft
  • Gov - pick 43 in the 2014 National Draft

If nothing else, it shows that there's many ways to build a team list other than just stockpiling high draft picks through the National Draft.

How many small/ medium sized fwds do the Swans have?

These players go through there: Heeney, Papley, Gulden, Parker and even Wicks

Who do we have that can play on these guys? Newman, Saad, Cincotta

What happens when plan A doesn’t work?
Need Boyd in there as an extra small defender

Docherty doesn’t play lockdown anymore
Fisher can’t

Might be worthwhile laying out a side, unsure who you think should and shouldn't be in the team at the moment

B: Kemp, Weitering, Cincotta
HB: Newman, Gov, Saad

C: Acres, Cripps, Docherty
Foll: TDK, Hewett, Cerra

FH: Martin, Harry, Cunners
F: Owies, Charlie, Motlop

I/C: Pitto, Cottrell, Walsh, Boyd/Marchbank
Sub: Dow

I'll say I'm not entirely set on the last 2 backs (from Cincotta, Boyd, Marchbank, Fisher).
And if Silvagni were fit, he'd be in for Pitto.

So I've got Fogarty, Hollands, Fisher and Durdin out from Sunday's team for Cripps, Doc, Motlop and Pitto, and then potentially Marchy out for Boyd, and Dow to sub.

I want Hollands giving us 15 km off the wing while Doc and Saad provide, run and play. Making off of halfback. I want Blake Acres playing his role on both sides of the ball. I want Cotts gut running off the bench to complement all 4 of them and then give us something across half forward as the cherry on top.

Not many teams can handle all of that.

There's not many teams who can match that.
I love Hollands, and think he's going to be an absolute gun for us. He's a pure footballer, who happens to inhabit an incredible athlete's body.
But...
He's very light. And in September, size matters. He's also a bit slow with his decision making/disposal under pressure. He gets smothered quite a bit. It will come no doubt, but it's a concern right now for finals.

The start against GC was very disappointing. The GWS game wasn’t, it was treated like a training match, like we were just trying to get through it.
It was essentially like a pre-season game. We experimented with a few things and never went at 100%, there was no need to. The qualification series was already done with, the real season starts next week. We will be on then.

Strong side, I would have Fog over Cuners, just
