Look at Collingwood. Wow

Hawks and CGS more about the fact they don’t have any experienced players!

Next least injury is Brisbane

Again Adelaide and Sydney are quite young lists and then you have Port and then Melbourne - top 4 team

Carlton the interesting one as that has just happened - so I expect their run to be over?

If we get Rohan, Bews and Guth back quickly we all of a sudden get down to 120 games missing (with 105 of those back up Ceglar - so really down to Collingwood’s level from best 22. Indeed Ceglar might not be injured - just on holiday with Willis - per Cats_09)… which frankly means no excuse then?

This is what we got to last year - albeit a little earlier. The “injuries“ we had in 2022 back end week to week was to cover up arrogance of managing too many. Basically had full list. In 2 weeks (maybe 3) we could be in the same position - question is whether too late to gel together. I can see why the MC will not at all be giving up on this team coming from 5th or 6th. We could (if no injuries from here) have a full list with only one player out from last year..
Exactly. How many times this season have we had less than 400 games missing? Maybe very early on when everyone looked unfit? We've certainly had many, many more games with over 800 missing. We are finally starting to get there but need a solid block of games, integrating our 2022 B&F winning midfielder Guthrie.

Not sure on that - even round 1 we were missing:
Duncan (268)
Kolodjashnij (155)
Menegola (116)
J. Henry (107)
Bowes (83)

That's 729 games all unavailable for round 1, and not sure if Ceglar was just being managed or injured early on as that's another 106 games before his debut this season

For whoever wins the premiership it is really about injuries from now that counts. That is why I wouldn’t take odds on Collingwood. No doubt they have been the best team year to date but they have a full list now - that doesn’t guarantee what what they will have in 5 weeks time.

Of course no one has that guarantee

For us the injuries we have had all year only relevant in terms of making a harder path from outside top 4. That is a real set back but not as important as the opportunity to get into finals with a full list. Question is whether that list will also be in full fitness and form and gel as a team. For now the club has no choice but to believe we can do a Bulldogs 2016 run. We have the experience and if they all come back into fitness and form we can genuinely go on that run.

Yep.

The reality is that finishing 5th-8th very likely means one interstate trip (two would be very unlucky, 0 would be very lucky) and 3 games at the MCG. We have failed on our road trips this season so it's a concern, but the last two have been competitive until the last moments and we still lacked a couple of crucial players we may have back. Port at AO might be a step too far, but Brisbane at the Gabba would be a coin flip. Likewise Melbourne at the G. And who knows, if we stepped up on the night we may take it to the top 2. Gotta be in it to win it.

Can't read it.
Guthrie said there had been “positive signs”.

“Positive signs I guess going forward now, it’s been a frustrating stint for me, not being able to get out on the field much this year,”

“I’ve kind of got one eye on late rounds in the season to hopefully come back and contribute, I know I want to be there but at the same time I want to be able to contribute something positive to the team and not just come in because I’ve played a lot of footy previously.

“That’s a driving factor for me to come back in and be able to give something of myself and offer something to the team.”

Guthrie had missed just two games since 2020 before suffering his toe injury, and has spent much of the season on the sidelines in a moon boot, helping out with the younger generation of Cats midfielders.

He said he had enjoyed, to an extent, watching on as the younger midfield brigade of Mitch Knevitt, Max Holmes and Tanner Bruhn developed their craft.

“I’ve actually in a way enjoyed the process, I’ve been realistic about my injury, I’ve been frustrated, don’t get me wrong on that,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed sitting back and watching things develop from a different side.

“I’m trying to help Shaun Grigg out in the midfield as much as I can and he’s always really open and positive about getting players’ thoughts.

“At the same time I don’t think I could see myself doing too much coaching, I’m not getting involved too much.”

That reads to me like he still might be a few weeks away. I was hoping for a surprise next week?

What do you think about coming back via VFL or straight in? He has been out a long time. But we would want to find out quickly whether he can help at AFL level? Maybe he comes in as a sub for first game?

Hawkins back training later this week is positive, hopefully he misses a maximum of two games.

Blitz sounds like only a chance for finals even if we get there, hopefully C Guth is back for the final two games which will at least help our midfield if we’re still alive.

At hawk's age you would think its 3-4 weeks possible hes even played his last game if we dont make finals.

I doubt we see blitz again this year as professional as he is in his rehab.

Surely we don't expect Hawkins to retire end of this year? He's been our leading goalkicker for the past 11 years (would have been 12 if he didn't do his hammy on Saturday). Furthermore, he's durable - between 2013-2023, Hawkins has played the 2nd most games of any AFL-listed player.

Add in he had a poor pre-season, which he isn't the only one, and of our older brigade he is one of the few who could go around again next year if he wanted.

Hes playing well enough to go on but it wouldnt surprise me if he hangs them up.

Is a high grade strain a tear?

I never understand hamstring injuries.
Yes, a severe strain is classified as a tear.

Injury update:

  • Hawkins - Should be running this week and only minor, but he and Blitz' return will become more clear over the coming weeks
  • Simpson - Splint to come off on Friday and will then return to full training
  • James Willis - Had a Hernia operation last week and will start running tomorrow.
  • Jye Clark - Alt G running and in the next 2 weeks will start full training again. A couple of weeks behind Cam Guthrie.
  • Guthrie - Training and being able to run and sprint, and participate in training too. Looking good and on track for later this season.
  • Kroeger - Full training after Hip injury and will be available the next VFL game vs Collingwood.
  • Bews - Got through VFL game, will be monitored but should be good to go.
