Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

So our only remaining item this year is Himmelberg?

Is anything likely to happen there? Have GWS actually made an offer? I can't really see it happening unless they offer up a similar kind of key position player, and if they had one of those spare they wouldn't be after Himmelberg. He's not the kind of player anybody is going to pay overs for to try and wrangle him out with a year to run on his contract rather than just wait a year to get him as a FA.

So our list rolling in to 2024 will be worse than 2023. Right?
Unless we jackpot our first rounders.

Agree - it is just the reunion of brothers and he's a handy backup fwd/ruck that plugs holes. Very much in the mold of Billy Frampton and co. GWS won't give us Pick 16 for him. And they don't have another pick until #43 which is basically worthless.

Burgess has come in as a like-for-like for Himmelberg (minus the part time ruck). We're awash with forwards. McAdam is a bit of a loss but we can cover him.

If I'm in Reidy's ear this morning, I'd say to release Himmelberg to GWS now for a Future 2nd pick - bank the points for this time next year when we have a dip at Petty & Lukosious in the trade period and then Sid Draper and Welsh in next years draft.

Awash with forwards? Not so sure about that.

Walker - in maybe his last year.
Fog - still uncertain about
Thilthorpe - yet to fully seal his spot
Gollant - a 3rd tall who looks more SANFL than AFL

Not a lot of depth there really. Burgess maybe - although I suspect we have him more for backlines depth.

Lots of WA talent in this years draft.
Meanwhile both WA sides are rebuilding.
We hold 10, 14, 20 for this years draft and don't have a clear plan... We want Draper and Welsh in next years draft.

Makes me wonder if we couldn't extract a 24-27yo midfielder from one of those WA clubs who won't figure in the back end of their rebuild but would be helpful to our flag window. Eg: James Aish from Freo (he was a Redlegs colt) and 25yo. Or go big, ask Caleb Serong whether he wants to play in a premiership in his career... because it won't happen at Freo. Come to Adelaide, fit straight into the midfield, feast on red leather young man, you might even win a Brownlow, and you're half way home to Gippsland.

Dish up the 3x first rounders, get a useful player and some 2024 draft capital back for a run at Draper & Welsh... that's the sort of shiny toy I want to see.

Gollant has looked alright to me - the issue there has been more to do with lack of opportunity due to the other forwards you mentioned being ahead of him. Not sure if he slots into McAdam's spot - he plays a bit taller than McAdam, but could step in to cover for Walker or Fog if they're injured / rested / dropped.

Could play McHenry and Murphy with Gollant to make up the pressure in the forward half too

Reidy was just on AFL Trade Radio right now.

Played a pretty straight bat to everything. Topics covered:
McAdam... fair. Wish him well.
Doedee... fair. Wish him well.
Himmelberg... likely to stay put. At the club today doing rehab on hamstring.
Petty... he's trying to get home at some stage, might look at him next trade period, 12 months is a long time in footy, we'll focus on this trade period now and worry about next year when it comes around. He's contracted for 2 years and we respect that.
Esava Ratagolea... hypotheticals. If a deal can't be done in the trade period and he goes to the Draft then a lot of clubs will enquire with Esava.
Clayton Oliver... we made genuine enquiries but it didn't go far and was shut down
Jack Gunston... (laughter)... haven't even considered it. He wants to go back to Melbourne, not Adelaide
Chris Burgess... brings key position versaility (fwd and back), quality young man, back around family.
Selections this year (10, 14, 20)... if we can get higher up the draft we'll look at that, we can keep moving picks, might be more movement between now and the draft and even on draft night. Really strong position but remain open minded.

Is the queue in the rack? No the queue is not in the rack, we remain open to conversations but also excited about our draft hand.

That's about it.

It is what it is...lets hope they can trade up using 14 & 20 as say 8 & 10 at the draft would be good as we will get 2 good players in, then use late picks to grab needs to fill out the list

Can we all just enjoy the trade period dumpster fire over at Alberton at the moment:
They've had nearly a fortnight and haven't got anything done yet. 1 day and 4 hours to go;
1. Zerk Thatcher - still no deal with Essendon and might send him to the draft
2. Ratugolea - still no deal with Geelong and might send him to the draft (to be fair, they have offered pick 25 which is reasonable)
3. Ivan Soldo - no deal yet, contracted player at Richmond.
4. Jordan Sweet - no deal yet with the Bulldogs
5. Xavier Duursma - talented wing/flank, wants to get out of Port Adelaide

There was no way we'd be getting more for McAdam. Anybody thinking otherwise were delusional.
That’s true but when the clubs putting it out there we only want a player and then we end taking the pick, what message we sending to the rest of the clubs?

It’s not the first time our bluffs are seen for what they are.

melbourne's future second was offered days ago, i don't whey we couldn't have asked for sydney's second instead. or a second and a third
He's not worth more, and the future second is more useful to us than a second this year. We have three picks already in the first round.

Oh ffs.
