Thinking on it, I wonder if part of the AFL compensation package we are seeking - and iirc we mentioned trading concessions as part of it centres around the ability to trade GC 2nd back to them so we can try and lock in a deal fort pick 4. Not a key cornerstone of any compo I would not think but part of it to help us out without having to try and split it and miss out on a deal to another club??

Why TF would Adelaide trade out ROB, only to trade in Grundy?

You do realise we're talking about 2023 Grundy, not 2019 Grundy? Grundy is absolutely cooked, and in no way an upgrade on ROB.
What?
Grundy isn’t cooked, just look at him earlier this year before Gawn came back.
The only issue is the cost and age.

I think it would worth a shot to get WCE first 2024, but I'm not sure we can give up that much.

If there was deal where we kept our pick 9 this year, I'd be all in.

We likely have picks coming in for Doedee and McAdam, so don't need all those picks in the 30s either.
I doubt we will be angling for future 1sts as we have 2 father & son picks... so points more of an issue for us.

Trading up this year should be the priority, given we have more decent picks than we can use.

The pick 9 this year would be crucial for us to get a KPD so would probably need to be involved. What picks are you expecting to land for Doedee and McAdam?
Second-round picks, since we already have 9, 21 and 23ish, we don't need anything above that.

Doedee could be end of second compensation (36 at worst I think) - we can't trade 23 (Gold Coast) back to GC either.

McAdam would have to be a 2nd, could be future - or word is on the board we want a player - so maybe he's not an asset-wise - but again would have to be Melbourne's second (30ish).

I can understand the 4 and 9 for future WC 1st as being fair demand by WC - but to give up 9, 21, 23 (or equivalent), and F1 (12) for one pick is a lot for one pick - to get to 4 and then to 1 means giving up more than equivalent on two occasions. We would want to have a clear target - like Draper.

We offered 3 firsts for Horne-Francis and instead got Rachelle, Rankine and Dawson for those picks - much better - so it's hardly worth the massive outlay. If we got pick 4 and 9 we'd be almost crazy not to take them to the draft this year - but then again to forecast a gun mid at pick 1 or 2 next year could be better than a mid-forward this year.

I don't think the club would do it - I'd be tempted if we had a target but would make this year's draft difficult viewing. If there was a draft to do it, it's this year though (all these Tassie and academy players).

Plus if there was a clear (Vic) standout number 1 next year (not Ashcroft) - we could always trade down to pick 2 and 3/4 next year.

I have serious doubts if Welsh will be top 10 - he's too small IMO. Around Fogarty's pick I'd think, or slide.

It's silly collecting future 1sts before the ladder order & where our father sons will likely be bid.

We should absolutely be trying to trade up this year though.

Lol, we're not getting any compensation package.

The AFL blamed it all on the goal umpire so unless we sue him personally, we aren't getting shit.

Perhaps, but the decision will have to be made by draft night this year so it's worth discussing.

The pool just looks uninspiring this year, We really need that gun midfielder, can we wait another year? Draft a super talent ready round 1, and put him into a midfield of Pedlar, Rachelle, Dawson and Soligo (2025). I think we can all forecast WC having at least one more year bottoming out.

All the Sydney clubs reach for a top draft pick before their academy picks - they do it just about every year.

Just seems to work for everyone. Granted I haven’t looked deeply into your list needs but I do know Draper is a jet and you might still be able to trade back to pick 4/5 and get him with change. You can also rest easy knowing that Welsh isn’t going to get bid on in the top 5 and absorb your pick. Obviously depends on just how s**t you think we are.

Probably correct atm. His form has dropped off of late. He was very disappointing in the reserves on Saturday. A preseason with the senior players and improving his fitness will tell.

I mostly agree we get the rough end of the stick from the AFL but there is I think a bit of a vibe that we’ll get something. Maybe some herbs and spices on FA compo, or more likely slightly better fixturing for next year (which we probably would have got anyway).

I'll take your opinion on this as better than mine given you actually watch his games, but it can be hard for forwards who dominate at a young age because of size to translate at AFL. Typically we need to see physical growth at 17-18 years, not full grown man at 16.

It would be hard to see a top 10 pick unless he actually improves next year.

In recent years WWT has had Luko, Pillipou and now Welsh. Atm I would rate them in that order. Welsh is playing as a 16yo in an U18 comp so next year should see an improvement.

Some of these predictions of him being a top 3 pick are pretty bloody optimistic.

I'd like us to move our future first into this year but there's every chance we just hold it, use it by making a selection prior to a Welsh bid.

Wouldn’t worry too much about his form this year , he’s done more than enough to be a likely top 10 pick when you consider he didn’t have a proper pre season

Just that one game against Vic country as a bottom ager is enough to put him in top 10 frame and he’s done plenty more than that too

If he gets a pre season in I think he’s clear ahead of where someone like Caddy will go this year which is around 8-12 as he’s a better player

My thoughts exactly. We know he has talent, and we know he has had back related issues as well this season so form will fluctuate.
His match against the Vics this year shows he has class.

I wouldn’t be opposed to us picking up Grundy if we also list one or two young potential ruckman via the draft/rookie - he does turn 30 next year but I think he could be a good fit and give us a different look around the ball. I think whoever picks him up will benefit from him going full tilt at resurrecting his career and having at least a couple of years in good form Which may be long enough to train up a younger ruckman.

I am also biased and so sick of watching Robotman leading our midfield.

We should be trying to get 2nd and 3rd rounders next year to load up on points. We don't need to target 1st rounders. Any picks we don't use this year will get pushed into next year for points.

The issue with getting Grundy is we would need to trade out ROB... & I doubt he would agree to move elsewhere.

Also, Grundy looks keen to go to Sydney, so I can't see either trade happening.

He'll go where he's told to go. He doesn't want to play in the SANFL the rest of his career.

That's rather simplistic thinking!

We are not going to want both ruckman on our list when we have glaring holes elsewhere.

This is all a pipe dream because Grundy doesn't want to come to the Crows & ROB doesn't want to leave.
