Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I can’t see how people cam see us get smashed so badly in the midfield week after week after week and think ‘no.1 priority is forwards’ tbh. I really can’t.

Our midfield and defence are overrated. They aren’t giving our forwards a chance.

Don’t fix our midfield we won’t fix our defence or forward line. Simple as that imo.

We need a good mids coach. Josh Carr and Mundy on field was a great combo. We are getting smacked in the midfield especially at centre bounces a lot of which is due to our age profile. Our 7 preferred mids today combined for a total of 485 games. Aish and JOM are 317 of those games.

We were no chance against Collingwood Mitchell 188, Crisp 217, Adams 199, Pendles 374, Sidebottom 301. We get bullied against more mature teams because we are so young.

What our midfield needs is time. We have invested heavily with the player mix mentioned above that played today. If you include Brodie we have a pick 1 (mini draft), pick 2, pick 7, 2 x pick 9’s, pick 10, pick 21 & pick 27.

As the midfield matures it will make our backs and forwards look better. It was only last year we were touted as having one of the best back lines in the AFL.

I am of the opinion we still need some more forward line and outside class.

Based on today, what's the view of Hamling and Wagner for next year. Thought Wagner was much improved
Hamling didn’t do much to impress me. Feel like he can cover for Pearce but not Cox. Didn’t notice Wagner either. Thought out defence as a whole was really poor, so not much to take out of it

I just don't understand how anyone can look at today and think its the small forwards that lost it for us

Charlie Cameron, Cody Weightman, Kozzy Pickett etc could be in our team and we still have 10 goals kicked against us in the second quarter

Our smalls are fine, we need to get better in the midfield and transition from the backline
Of course our small forwards are not the reason we are shit this season. This does not mean we shouldn't draft one. Literally every team that has made a grand final has an elite small forward. By the time we make one Walters will be on his last legs/retired, Switta can't be relied on with his injury history/inconsistency and Schultz is a flight risk/inconsistent.

Brockman should be our no.1 trade target but we also need to draft an elite speedy small forward.

Schultz is being played more up the ground this season and we're not getting much return on it. Much prefer to see him and Banfield swap roles. Let Schultz pressure and tackle closer to goal and keep a defender honest as a marking option (plays taller regardless) and see what Banfield can offer as a HFF/Midfield role rotating with Switta.

Think the only real small forward we've had for years has been Walters and Ballantyne?

  • Amiss/Treacy/Jackson as gun talls
  • Banfield/Sturt/Fyfe all playing as 3rd Tall/Medium Forwards
  • Switta's more of a HFF/Mid than a dedicated Small Forward
  • Henry drafted as one, but grew into a Winger and Freddy as a HFF/Wing himself
  • Schultz plays as a Medium Tall
  • Walters at 32 still remains our best crumbing forward

Is this our biggest issue? No but it's the one we can't solve without drafting or bringing in new talent.

Our midfield problem will solve itself as our young stars develop with time, but is already known. Our backline looks 100% better with Chapman back in to support Pearce/Cox/Ryan instead of Hughes (love Hughes but he's got some real limitations as a player at this level). Young with less responsibility to chop out also frees his game up more too.

This draft we need to look at Key Defenders for the future and a Small Forward for the now.

We literally drafted two 18 year KPDs last season so that’s already been done. Three KPDs under 20 would be overkill imo.

I’d 100% be interested in adding a mature aged big-bodied defender to the list in the off season though. Not sure Davies or Draper playing at AFL level next season as a KPD would end too well and I don’t believe simply keeping Hamling for 1-2 years is the answer either.

Schultz has been disappointing, so has Switkowski.
Pearce don't get me started.
Erasmus, Johnson, Henry, Amiss, even Treacy showed a bit today.
Get a good coach, and we are Top 8. Keep Longmuir and we struggle

Are there any legs to the Schultz trade rumours? If so what do you think he’s worth?

I am hoping we can convince Brockman to come home and then do a straight swap with Schultz. Hawthorn apparently have been interested in him in the past.

Forward line to have Brockman, Walters and Freddy (if he regains his mojo), with Switta as backup in the WAFL. Once Walters retires, just Brockman and Freddy in the 22. We might draft a Delean or Collard or someone like that to develop on the list.

Banfield turned it over by foot every time he got it up the ground today

Schultz is free agent due to previously being delisted rather than being a delisted free agent.

When Mabior Chol left Richmond they got a compensation pick. Chol was a free agent for the same reason.
He hit a trigger on games played so under contract for 2024. So he will need to be traded. That is at least my understanding. When out of contract he is a free agent.

I agree with others that a quality small forward should be looked at with one of our draft picks.

Just thinking about back up KPD should Hamling as expected not get a contract. I quite like Jacob Blight from Peel. strong and solid boy - quite young as well. Is more attacking than Hamling but good one on one defender. Could be added via rookie draft. Between he and Chapman provide cover for Cox/Pearce whilst allowing Draper and Davies time to develop. Also Chapman having versatility to play other roles.

Absolutely forgot about last season's draftees 🤣

Davies looks like a Ryan replacement down the line as that 3rd Tall intercepting, decent size on him too. Draper with that athleticism could be a real problem too.

Whilst I agree with most of this I was not necessarily saying that we need to recruit midfielders - only that it’s currently our biggest problem.

Whether it’s personnel, coaching or recruiting (i.e. too many of one type etc.) it needs to be fixed or recruiting literally any other player to our list is a waste of time.

You’ve identified outside class - well I’d be of the opinion that we need some of that in the midfield (I include wings as midfield btw). Speed is lacking too.

Sturt showed some decent clinical goalkicking today and good leading patterns.
Needs to play every game now till end of the season and see what he’s capable of. He’s never had a genuine run in the side
Leads well, finishes well and pressures + tackles? Dropped.

Let Sturt get that run, see what he can do with a good 8-10 weeks of footy. Doesn't have to set the world on fire, but if he kick 25-30 goals a season, pressure and provide a legitimate 3rd option to draw defenders away from Amiss & Treacy then that's a fantastic value.
