Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

And Brayshaw doesn’t have that….. surely you jest
I did not say that. Would be happy with any of Serong, Brayshaw or Pearce as the captain after Fyfe. The only skill requirement on a captain is consistency to the point that they aren't in danger of getting dropped. All three have sufficient skill to play every game where they are available, and leadership in spades.

What do we know about our two train on players?

Stubbs is another medium forward, so I would hazard a guess and say Graham really wants us to have at least one, if not two of them in our forward line. We now have Corbett (190cm), Banfield (190cm), Sturt (189cm), Emmett (186cm) on our list and Stubbs (186cm) as a train on.

Interesting that Tom de K resigned with Galong.

Good Key defender 203cm…

Yeh could do with more of them rather than some 10cm shorter.

This fascination with sub 200cm KPF and KPD is going to leave us in big trouble down the track.

Watch a lot of Perth footy, Stubbs is an amazing talent and beautiful kick for goal but we all know who the club is selecting and it’s not Stubbs

Not seen Serong, but he’s been plucked from beyond the black stump based on bloodlines.

I hope we invite a few more to train, as it’s a bit embarrassing.

Not overly impressed with what I’ve seen of Stubbs, same but not as good as what we drafted. Yeh Na

I agree. While it's hard to be critical of Walls and his team and I do love his choices this year, that is the one area that we've left ourselves vulnerable. Pre-draft Walls mentioned that we needed some big bodies to support Pearce and ultimately replace him but I'm not sure Davies is that player. Maybe Draper will be and that was who Walls was thinking of.

Ross Lyon had a fascination with key position players at, or close to 200cm and 100kg and I think he's right - that's the sweet spot.

...of course, and football nouse and ability but that all goes without saying.

I think we could make a key defender out of a giant athlete without footy ability, at least until they get poached for $800,000 a year for five years. Imagine finding out Alex Pearce is being paid half as much as Logue in 2023.

Agree to disagree (acknowledging however that WAFL is not always a strong indicator of if you are going to make it in the AFL)
Clearly the club was intent on drafting a goal scoring ready to go mid-sized forward and Emmett and Stubbs were high on the list)

I just don't see the need to add another mid-sized fwd to the list. We've got sturt, banfield and then added corbett and emmett. None of these guys are proven at all so adding another speculative mid sized fwd just seems useless.

Don't agree with that. You can't teach reading the play and the days of just telling a defender to stay on a single player for the whole game are long gone. There's also the matter of skills, all defenders have to get the ball and dispose of it wisely these days.

I do see your point but I think if I could make a tall athlete in a lab and then train them to let their opponent lead them to the ball, but then beat them to the ball with their superior athleticism to spoil it that will be enough for a serviceable AFL player.

No marks, no kicking, just lock him down. There can be a role for that. Griffin Logue will be most of the way there next year with a bit more involvement.

Last night at FFC’s member forum meeting prior to Annual Members Meeting, Fyfey said when he and Andy were in the US recently they ‘discussed all things leadership”…

Oh I agree, Serong is more of a need and if we select one of the two it will be him. Just pointing out that I think it might have been a close decision between Emmett and Stubbs and they still want to have a look at how Stubbs performs in an elite pre-season. Sturt better get on his bike this year!

I'm expecting Liam Serong to be signed to Freo seven days plus or minus from the time Caleb Serong does.

Caleb has probably already signed and they just waiting for a time to announce it, my bet is two days after a horrible training incident that sees one of our best 22 out for 6 months. That or as a Christmas present during the time off when players get to go home and there’s no other news to report.
