Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Sigh someone’s gotta do it I guess

5 yrs ?

I love Lukey but he’s not getting anymore athletic

Overcontracting is our kryptonite

5 yr deals should be for the cream of the crop 20 - 23 yr olds ONLY

3yrs at a bit better rate or thanks for your efforts good luck with it all

Tend to agree. He'll be depth and almost full-time in the WAFL in the last 2 years of the contract, at least.

I realise that we need good depth as well as a strong best 25 or so but this seems a bit ott. Hopefully the value tapers as it progresses.

Luke Ryan will never play a WAFL game again. Not unless he’s a long term injury returnee.

Big fan of Luke, but he needs a Plan B on kick outs this season, we weee figured out early with the same strategy and you’d argue our speed and scoring slowed when that happened

Don’t disagree in principle but it’s out of our hands now. The market dictates what players earn and how long they are signed for. Club culture can also be a factor and I think ours is generally good.
If Eric hipwood is worth 7 years then lukey is easily worth 4.
Since the new CBA was announced all the power us with the players it seems.

I hope you're right because I love the guy as a player and it'd make his 5y contact make more sense but I just can't see it happening.
I think he’s the kind of player that could win the norm smith medal if we reached the GF. To me he’s locked in as a top 8 player in the club. If we are playing Luke Ryan in the WAFL you are talking a dynasty level team.

Ryan had an average year this season, but was still pretty good.

The fact he had other clubs chasing him on larger money suggests to me we had to give him another year on his contract because of less money to get him to stay. He’s an important member of the squad for a few different reasons & additionally if he left there’s a risk that Cox has one less reason to stay.

We know Adelaide has been chasing Cox for years now, Ryan helps us with that discussion & he’s a pretty handy player too.

Luke Ryan is our medium defending intercept defender, who won AA playing key defender against the likes of Tom Hawkins.

He just always seems to get hit by a bus on the field and then carry that through the season, getting through with a sore back.

It looked like an adjustment year for Luke. Haven’t had too many seasons where all of Cox, Pearce and Logue have been available. The previous couple of years played quite a bit of KPD. He is third medium tall and a good distributor. I would however limit his kicking out from behinds. That should be left to likes of Young, Clark and Wilson.

With Logue gone and Hamling back into the picture as first off the bench and having gone through this adjustment (his back half of the year was good I thought), he should be a lot better.

3-year extension would have prob been the clubs preferred but with interest over east he has secured a 4-year extension. No big issue for me.

I don’t think we lose any of the young interstate best 22 players any time soon. The biggest flight risks are now all signed up and the earliest Serong leaves is after another 4 year contract IMO. Cox is going absolutely nowhere, ignore the SA media which just pander to Crows supporters

Crows are going to offer him the bag like North did with Logue though, we may have to pay overs to keep him and our club has been reluctant to pay overs over the last couple of years

I'll be painted as the negative person on here but Ryan's new contract seems crazy to me. I just don't understand why a guy who is 27 in February should be given a 4 year contract. Last year may indeed be an anomaly, or a slowing down in form. (Which is hard to know right now).

I do really like Ryan and recognize that he has been an AA defender but we have such a long history in signing people up for too long.....from Blakely, to Stephen Hill to Danyle Pearce. When will this club learn?

I agree. While it's hard to be critical of Walls and his team and I do love his choices this year, that is the one area that we've left ourselves vulnerable. Pre-draft Walls mentioned that we needed some big bodies to support Pearce and ultimately replace him but I'm not sure Davies is that player. Maybe Draper will be and that was who Walls was thinking of.

Ross Lyon had a fascination with key position players at, or close to 200cm and 100kg and I think he's right - that's the sweet spot.
McFarlin was 192, Hamling 194, and Dawson 197.

Not a single 200cm among them.

Myth Busted.

It depends on money.

4 years on low cash is fine.

None of those were AA players

Luke Ryan isn't a Nic Suban
