I have been a fan of his, but am prepared for us to lose Mitch McGovern (who seemingly wants another pay day and or team up with his brother)

Reckon we drafted and will develop Lemmey to take his spot in the team eventually.

Kemp more likely the Gov replacement

Depends how we're defining team defence.

Richmond got it from the defensive 50 turnover, after Harry's dropped mark, to a little forward of centre with relative ease. But at that point we slowed their run and forced them to go laterally. Then they bombed it long and high to a contest where we had multiple talls in perfect position to impact. Those talls didn't. The team defence that stopped the quick play, and then forced a long high entry (which is preferred to a lace-out pass to a loose forward) was fine. The resulting contest was arse.

From the gather, they kick to Baker at CHB uncontested.
We don't apply any pressure until after he's taken a bounce and allow him to run 30 before he kicks.
Mansell takes a diving mark which is just unlucky for us, if the ball hung higher, Saad had him covered, if it dropped short we had a 3 on 1. But from there, Mansell can kick to Hopper completely unmanned at C-CHF about 75 out. Docherty doesn't push up to man the mark, gives him an extra 10-12 meters of space so he can kick to Lynch.
Except for Mansell's diving mark, we hardly applied any pressure until Lynch's contested mark.

I think Fish claims a spot in the whipping boy stakes(there's always a couple) is because HF is position of desperate need for Carlton and as a pure HF(along with Martin and maybe JSOS) he is underwhelming. Remove him/them from midfield cameo's and he provides zero threat, he's durable, a good field kick and is worthy of fringe player status(not a lock) that should be prepared for VFL time until our forward line is functioning.

Hope Austin has his eye's on a fast, highly skilled hybrid forward/mid or 2 to invigorate our forward line.(Sheezle or Humphrey would walk straight in to this side)
Who are the leading contenders?

I hope people start to understand that the way we play does not lend itself to the half forward flank / forward pockets getting high possession numbers every week. You can take your pick of the best forward flank in the league - drop them into our team - and the performance level would be similar to Fish / Martin.

It's not the personnel - it's the way we play. We don't play through the forward flanks at all. We bomb the ball over their heads hoping for a fist out of bounds but usually turning the ball over - and occasionally a mark to Harry/Charlie.

Especially when the opposition gets on top of us at the clearances.

We look reasonably well setup here blocking the middle of the ground. It forced Baker to take a risky kick - it was centimetre perfect and well-marked too.

Just unlucky Saad couldn't get a fingertip in:

The issue is Martin should not have been brought straight into the team off no preseason games.

Owies and Motlop had 10 possessions which is not too far below par for a small forward, especially when you only get it I50 46 times for the game. Rioli only got it 11 times.

People seem to be over reacting to a draw in a game we were 50/50 to win. After the turnover from H dropping the mark we defended well and in the last crucial contest Weiters, Young and McG allowed a contested mark by the 1 guy capable of doing it. Haven't seem any flak coming their way.
If we are going to move forward from last year we need our small forwards hitting the scoreboard, we are not going to progress if we cannot get some other players kicking 25-35 goals, they get the ball 10 possessions per game, but the two key things missing was forward 50 pressure and not hitting the scoreboard, they are the two key KPI's for our small forwards.
Owies is not up to senior level, Motlop has undoubted potential but his performance last week was average at best.

That is not an accurate reflection of the commentary.

Yep.

Stamos has a valid point on Doc though. He was tracking back into the D50 and left Hopper completely free in the corridor. Realised his error and started going back, but stopped about 10m short of the actual mark. Had a pushed right up, it may have been a more shallow entry.

That being said, I'm gonna call out Lew Young for the final contest here as well. Needed to get involved, but he shied away from Lynch's jump. Even so, Gov nearly got a fist in coming across the front. Young needed to get involved as well, either bodying up with Lynch to deny him room to jump, or by jumping as well and trying to punch the ball from behind. He was third man into that contest, but never actually committed.

Also noticed that the only one out the back of that contest was Taranto....no small defenders there to stop him sneaking one home if the ball came out the back.

Mitch McGovern’s manager said categorically that the media story was taken from a media question directly to his brother who asked him if he would you like to play with his brother, he replied yes but that’s probably not going to happen…

Further his manager said after certain media people ran with it as gospel that not one (C.Cornes was one to run his mouth of again) person actually rang him to say hey what’s the truth to it all…
“Absolutely none”

If McGovern provided he stays on the park injury free, he’s a key component of our backline for the immediate future, for a club who should be finals bound and hopefully contenders in the near future…

He’ll play on a fair wage negotiated by the club and his management for the chance of team success, going back to the Eagles whom look to be close to loosing a number of star players past their best to retirement and a heavy list regeneration would be a terrible decision….

Will Hayward should be priority #1

the perfect compliment to Harry & Charlie

Doch doesn't defend well. He'll get the intercept marks but leave his man undefended way too often.

Bergman, E Hollands, Himmelberg and Ainsworth are the 4 I'm watching with interest this year. All will be quite gettable imo but Hollands and Ainsworth probably not going to be let go in the same year as both are under contract for another year. Still think one could be shaken loose.

Also like the shout of Hayward but realistically why would you ever leave the Swans if you're in their 22 and like living in Sydney? Fantastic club who consistently get the best from their players.

Hayward is in their leadership group so he’ll be extremely hard to move but I think he’s be perfect for us. I’d be happy to get McInerney, Wicks or even Harry Cunningham. Clearly I share your view on the Swans.

Gulden is the one I wanted. I really wanted us to at least bid on him at the draft. Hard to move now.

Hayward and Himmelberg would be good gets. That's a pipe dream though. I'd settle for Himmelberg and I'd be interested in shorty Daniels if he was potentially available. Like the way he goes about it. Motlop, Durdin and him buzzing around our forward line would be good.

Hayward Curnow Durdin
Motlop Mckay Himmelberg.

Don't mind it but think if we were in the ear of Himmelberg we'd be better with another pressure forward rather than a second goal sneak like Hayward with Mots

Ainsworth Curnow Durdin
Motlop Mckay Himmelberg

Wouldn't have to be Ainsworth specifically, but I think I like that balance more if we were to get a 3rd target in like HH.

Or the real dream

Ainsworth Curnow Durdin
Hayward Mckay Himmelberg

I would be playing Honey and Kemp week in week out in firsts - tbh am frustrated by their lack of exposure to AFL - whilst wasting time on players who hit their low ceiling a couple of years ago.
I agree 100% Re Kemp. Similar size to JSOS with more natural athleticism, however does he have the competitive streak? We need to find out. I could envisage him roaming up and down a wing.
I’d love to see Carroll given an extended run We need some silk in the mid rotations.
Honey for Owies is a no brainer.

Stylistically, as they're utilities, Kemp would be the potential McGovern replacement.
Lemmey would be replacing TDK/JSOS as the forward/ruck option IMO.
