The question to ask ourselves re pick 1 trade is how much would it take to land a gun player like that 5 years into their career? And how often does a club like North gets an opportunity to do that. Perhaps it’s better to overpay now while we have the currency and we don’t need to compete with big clubs for his signature.

Didn't realise a team is contractually obliged to keep a trade offer open indefinitely. Good to know...

Brady to Melbourne "hey remember that time you offered a 2nd rounder for Aaron Mullet, well yeh we'd love to do that now thanks".
We might get our hands on Patrick Vezpremi after all...

We got that opportunity with Shagga but had to give up Shwatta in 97.
If in 5 years we are real favourites for a flag with an exciting list, stable environment, then we can attract a gun player (say Reid) but we'll have to give something up as always...or we splash the cash and offer a 2mill/8yr contract or something like that.
Lets hope we have gun players and don't need to 'buy' a player to take that final step.

Judd was traded for 3, 20 and a young Josh Kennedy (4).

Jeremy Cameron was traded for 13, 15, 20, with Geelong getting two future 2nds back which ended up being picks 24 and 27.

a winning trade for Geelong, and a losing one for Carlton

Super trades ain't all they're cracked up to be ... as closer to home, we know from Leigh Colbert=Cameron Mooney + picks

Question for under 18s footy followers. Is Darcy Wilson any good? Probably not the type of player we have an urgent need for, but he tested well at the combine with the 2nd fastest 2km trial and best running vertical jump. Is he a possibility of still being available for a late teens pick? He supports North. Take him as an Uncle-Nephew pick?
Assuming we still have pick 15 and he is still available, that kid just racks up possessions, really clever ball user and can run all day, more an outside player but he just seems to be in and around the ball all the time...would he be a great pick up? I reckon he'll be a luxury pick as we have plenty of mid/fwd, possibly could play off HB as a rebounder to a link up type player much like Whitfield...only problem is he won't be there at #15.

Tim Kelly the other one.

Traded for 14 (Cooper Stephens-del), 24 (Jeremy Sharpe-del), 37 (Nic Bryan), R1 (13) became 18 in the draft (Ryan Angwin). A few of those picks were on traded to other clubs, just as a rough idea.

Harley Reid is not a gun player five years into his career, though...

Methinks you are taking it out of context a tad but feel free to distort the post.

Fascinating interview.
  • Curtins manager (which probably means Curtin himself) appears desperate for WC to take him
  • Clearly his manager has been involved in the Pick 1 trade conversations, as well as the potential of WC trading back into Melbs pick
  • North in the mix, Hawks super keen, Melbourne a certainty if he lasts to there

No, the question is do we want to trade for the player we think Harley Reid can potentially become? There is no guarantee that Harley becomes a gun player regardless of who takes him.
