They’d still duck it upCould we really end up with 2 defenders called dawson next year?
I'd do it just to mess with the commentators

I'll be pissed if we miss all of Curtin, O'Sullivan and Leake, but I'll get over it.
With this stuff, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Possibly our worst two drafts were when we took these approaches to extremes. 2014 when we started with three tall defenders (presumably based on future need). 2020 when we started with four small mids (presumably based on some best available moneyball theory).
I don't really differentiate between different parts of the draft, the approach is the same. Most rank players into tiers. To me, if two players are in the same tier you chose the player within that tier that fills your biggest need - even if you have them ranked slightly lower than another player that doesn't fill a need. This is more of an option later on as the tiers are bigger and so you are more likely to find a player that fills your needs.I feel like you're conflating drafting for talent over need with early picks (top five) with drafting for talent over need with ALL picks.
List balance and needs should absolutely be considered with 15, 17 and 18.
This makes a reasonable sales pitch. The scoreboard impact is one thing, but look at his hands around the contest and in transition
No we have 6 senior list spots maximumSo the AFL has us with 7 draft picks, 2 3 15 17 18 57 & 82. Does that mean we have 7 list spots vacant?
Simpkin with more speed and evasiveness.Sam Mitchell with more forward craft
Duursma is the next Connor Rozee/Toby Greene imo.
He walks into any side on his ability to impact games.
You two are cute asWe’ve always been friends mate
Yep, and it's got us the list shambles of a list that we have today.
How do North build a premiership backline from Trade, FA and DFA? We've seen what it takes to get a FA of McKay's quality; what would a gun cost? So far we have traded in Corr, Logue and Fisher - fringe players who came to us because they couldn't get regular positions in their teams best 22. And we've picked up a couple of state league DFA's.
This is the Richmond backline when they finally broke through.
Broad 67 Rance 18 Grimes psd
Houli 42 Astbury 35 Vlastuin 9
Melbourne's
Hibberd psd May NT priority selection Lever 14
Bowey 21 Petty 37 Salem 9
I could go on.
We can move some of more talented players back to defense, but we are basically starting with nothing. If we would be reaching to take the best defenders at our picks, then move the picks.
My critique of him from the highlights, is that he burnt some easy handball options so he could get the kick away himself. Might be how the coaches wanted him to play, might be self interest in a draft year, but it's not something he can do regularly at AFL level. There's something nagging me about McKercher. The more I see of him, the more concerned I'm getting.
Well who knows with 15/17/18 its just an average from the last 20 drafts that suggest at least one of those picks go on to become X Y Z.. there is nothing to suggest that they are all X’s or all Y’s or all Z’s. I believe we are ****in stewy dew for some luck.So if all things go ok with this draft
Picks 2&3 we get one good 200 game player and an star all Australian
Picks 15/17/18 one really good 200 game player, one ok player and one bust.
I would take that right now.
And CT slid to pick 46 - mainly because of his reputation as a poor trainer and lack of professionalism - a reputation that has been confirmed 100% at NMFC and why he won't be on an AFL list past this contract.Who's this U18 draft profile?
"An energetic medium forward who is strong overhead and has serious match winning capabilities"
Ans: Curtis Taylor.
I watched Curtis' U18 highlights - and he was all of that. He looked pretty impressive.
Rookie Me Central had him going as high as pick 10 and Twomey had him pick 23 in his phantom draft.
Twomey even described Taylor in an eerily similar fashion to what's been written about Duursma now: " classy and a clever finisher".
I know - but Duursma is more athletic at the same age, right?
Don't know because Taylor sat out the Combine testing with injury.
Duursma didn't though but you'd have to say he tested modestly - 3.05 in 20m sprint and a 6.38 2k trial.
Interestingly, in Curtis' draft year, Twomey had Duursma's brother at pick 18.
Xavier's proved to be a neat enough tweener but the knock on him he lacks the elite athletic traits of his mates - Rozee and Butters.
Time will tell with Zane, he does look skilful.
But Taylor is living proof that if you're a tweener, not a midfielder and you don't have standout athletic traits, it doesn't always translate from junior football to playing against men at the elite level.
Those other teams won flags by building gun defenses. The one you put forward for us is putrid.I'm not entirely sure what point you were making by listing Richmond and Melbourne's premiership back 6 but I've added in the draft pick that each player was originally taken at.
Now here is a potential North Melbourne back 6 in 2024.
Corr 14 Logue 8 McDonald 8
Sheezel 3 Comben 31 Stevens 5
With the following players likely to play in the back half at some stage
Fisher 27 Goater 22 Bergman 38 Pink rookie draft Dawson msd Nyuon 54
To undo the injustice of not getting a game for most of last year, we will play him twice in every game this year.Could we really end up with 2 defenders called dawson next year?
I'd do it just to mess with the commentators
Looks like Tom Scully to meSimpkin with more speed and evasiveness.
He doesn’t have the evasiveness, agility and vision of Rozee imo and he doesn’t have the core strength or creativity of Greene.
I think Souup mentioned a Heeney type and I’d probably agree that’s more his ceiling.
Nah, still kerch and the duur for me
Defense and Defenders in this context are two different things.Premierships are won by teams with great defenses. Have a look at ours.
Best available is just a slogan. If used as a rule, list management barely exists. It becomes more about chance - based on where your picks fall.
Good pickup by you. Looks sensational in the highlights. Worth taking a punt on the behavioural stuff to get a player who might be a cut above. The one player who I think will bite us on the backside if we overlook is Mitch Edwards. In my opinion I think he is the best young ruck to come through the juniors since Tim English.
Genuine height, beautiful tapwork, good follow up, best skills and contested marking threat around the ground. If we were to overlook him and to a lesser extent Goad for Will Green I’ll be filthy. I just don’t see the upside in Green compared to the other two rucks.
CZ is ****ing ripped, he is not a ****ing midfielder. Never has been. There are midfielders and theres half backs and half forwards, not even wings. Even that slob pedo from * and once a dog is not a midfielder. But they are genuine forwards. And CT slid to pick 46 - mainly because of his reputation as a poor trainer and lack of professionalism - a reputation that has been confirmed 100% at NMFC and why he won't be on an AFL list past this contract.
.......Taylor was drafted by North Melbourne with pick 46 in the 2018 national draft. He was often cited as a draft "slider", which The Age attributed to clubs' concerns over his commitment at training.....
There are no apparent concerns about Duursma's training/commitment/professionalism hence he will be pick 4 draft selection.
There are alot of talented young players running around kicking a football - not all have the professionalism of a Bailey Scott hence they dont make the grade. CT is one of these underachievers.
In addition Duursma is 2-3cm taller with a huge vertical leap so much less of a tweener than CT.
