For me it's a bit like Simon Black. Leadership group 100% and amazing bloke. Captain? Not so sure.

My bet is on Harris with Neale as VC.
Harris is definitely the preferred...local QLD bloke who has plenty of footy ahead of him. Not so sure Lachie wants it at this stage in his career. We will find out soon enough.

Any thoughts on Starcevich as a smokey. 23 years old, entering his prime, tough as old boots, probably will play as a rotating midfielder in the near future, and offers stability as captain for the next 7 - 8 years.
No way will Starce become a rotating midfielder now or in the future. He has found his spot and has become one of the competitions best down back. There is also no need for it with the quality of midfielders we have long term.

this is why i think andrews will edge out the others

the club would love the optics of having a local academy product as captain

i also think hes the best personality for handling media / sponsorships from the 3 likely options

Ahh, I yearn for the good old days when half our team was in the leadership group and we had a quarter of our team as Captains. We were so successful.
Bring it back I say. Oh, hang on....

It's funny, a few years ago, I couldn't NOT see Andrews as the next captain.

I met both him and Zorks at a players sponsors event about four or five years ago. Andrews was so warm and affable; he knew the names of names of his sponsors and charming everyone. Zorks had a beanie covering his face, sticking to the corner of the room.

Throw in back to back All Australians as well, and all the growth gained by playing next to Hodge.

But the last couple of years, with injuries and form, it feels a bit less likely. I'm sure his still an absolute gentleman though.

Harris is 100% but Neale is in the mix for sure.

I might be overreacting but I think Harris could do without the distraction of captaincy this year as he tries to get back to his best.

He wasn't bad last year and I think the big issue is team structure and defence, but still has some things to work on. Regardless of that, we have got to stop the situation where our key backs have so many 1v1s to defend - harris defended 139 last year which was 40 more than the next player in the comp (Sam Collins). Any player is going to look bad in that circumstance and we have to defend better.

Agree, IMO the captaincy would have zero affect on Lachie's elite on field performance, not as sure on Harris.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it but surely it’s Neale already and they’re just waiting to announce it right?

We’ve got Fish saying he’s the favourite, and he’s the betting favourite too. Add in that new promo material featuring Neale with “All in for a new era” as the tag line… New era as in new captain, no? That photo was from Friday too, which is before Zorko was announced as stepping down

Reckon we're really lucky having three stand-out choices. I would personally go for Lachie - I think the step-up to captain will have the least impact on his game. He's already doing a fair bit of media and he's the ultimate professional. He's a safe choice.

Harris would be the choice for continuity and trying to not mess up the hierarchy. While Hugh would be the choice if we wanted to lock the captaincy up long-term (next 7+ years).

I don't think there's a bad option to be honest.

Would Fages and the Footy Department have input into this sort of marketing stuff - I would be very surprised if so...my guess is that the media/PR team work quite independently of the senior coaching group and would certainly not be privy to inside information about the next Captain in waiting.

100%. Whiting no different to any media...just trying to make himself relevant. (that comment will be popular with some on here. haha.) Whiting has no idea and its all speculation.

Geez, I have always thought Fish was the keep things in perspective, tell it how he sees it, play a straight bat to everything, type.

If there was one person in the media not trying to make himself relevant, it would be Fish.

He writes for AFL dot com, so can’t just run with any type of rumour. Works in the AFL’s smallest market. And up until a couple of months ago, co-hosted the club’s official podcast, so kept to a standard line of questions.

100%. Not a Whiting fan at all. Dom Fay is bearable.
Geez ML. They're just guys doing a job and overwhelmingly are positive about the club ,the players and the coaches.

You can't be in the media and pretend you're in Fort Knox.

I don't put confirmation substance in any of their opinions but they provide much needed content for the club and do so enthusiastically. I can't remember them saying anything derogatory or not in the club's interests. I've heard plenty of worse interviewers as well.

As far as what they do goes, which is all I can judge them on ,they seem to be at a more than reasonable level of competence and integrity.
