Was lucky enough to attend a thank you hosted by the Lions last night at Springfield for volunteers at local footy clubs. The players who were at the Community Camp that afternoon came up for an hour to have a chat with us. First up let me say that as supporters we should be enormously proud of the players for the humble way they go about things and the way they engaged with everyone. No one was on their phone scrolling through their socials or reading texts etc. First guy into the room was Cam and he just made a bee line to the table where my mate and I were and if he isn't one of the happiest people alive then I am a poor judge. He stayed and chatted with us for about 20 minutes - excited about the year ahead and I said to him that he looked in fantastic nick- said it was the first proper pre-season post the ACL. Chatted a bit about playing in the back line in the intra-club.
Next chat was with Shadeau Brain and for a guy who has only just lobbed at an AFL club he was great to talk to - mentioned to him that we had been to a pre-season meet the players at Brendale possibly in Fage's second year and that the first question that Fages asked us was "how were the players - were they respectful". He said that Fages still asks that question just about every time they get together - are you staying grounded. On to Will next - I actually worked with his grandfather on his mums side at Westpac years ago - had a chat about that. Said he is enjoying living in Brisbane - never lived here before only the Gold Coast. No problem with the commute (in fact that was the message from all the players I spoke to) just sticks on a podcast and develops his brain a bit more. Says he is loving playing in the midfield group with Lachie and Josh. Caught up with Hugh, my goodness what an impressive guy. We spoke about his trip to Nepal, the season ahead and how genuinely excited he is about Will and Jack Gunston. Had a laugh at the photo of Hippy on Instagram when he was a young fella - mentioned that the club had tried everything to get size into him but that just looks to be his genetic disposition. One thing that he did say that no one really likes playing on him because he is so mobile and all arms and legs and if you try to play him close you are liable to cop a stray elbow.
Caught up then with Carter Michael - again just a really impressive guy who is under no illusions about hard he is going to have to work to get a run but he is certainly up for it. Quick chat to Lachie as it was getting towards the end of the night. Steely determination there to go the extra couple of steps and is excited about what he sees in Will.
Next up was Dizzy - didn't realise he is so tall! At that stage of his career where he says the pre-season is a bit of a grind but he thinks the payoff will be worth it - again just a really down to earth person.
Last person I got to was Oscar - what a legend! Spoke about the midfield group and his smile was like a split watermelon "mate I am now spoiled for choices for the centre square bounces and around the ground hit outs.
Big thanks to all of them for making themselves available - would have been a long day for them but they all had a smile on their face and more than willing to have a chat to anyone that came up to them,

Excellent feedback SHR17
And thanks for your local footy volunteer work
Without people like yourself the grass roots level of AFL would be in trouble

Ashcroft a lock for Round 1. If form is any indication of how good this young man actually is, he will make Nick Daicos look ordinary. His workrate is elite in all aspects of any game he's played including tackling.
I propose a mandatory fine for anyone that has Will & Nick Daicos in the same post on our board. 😜

Nick Daicos was sensational(he is elite by foot) in 2022 albeit in a completely different role than Ashcroft will play, if Will makes Nick's 2022 look ordinary that would some effort.

Sam Walsh's debut season was also pretty impressive.
Reports from experts in the game say Will has all that Daicos has and more. Not sure how different they both will end up but suspect them both in the midfield sometime pretty soon.

Nice warm & fuzzy to read your post. We as supporters are lucky to have such a club to follow. All class from top to bottom.

All I have seen of Will's kicking is snippets from short highlight reels but from those glimpses and from what I have read that area of his game is not at an elite level like Daicos, hopefully the so called experts are wrong on that front.

It will be fantastic to see him live at the Gabba in Round 2 against the Demons, the anticipation is building already.

I don't disagree with anything you said Mighty Lions but if you go back to the Melbourne game last year where Zorks got hung out to dry some regular posters who had been having sly digs at him over time came out with with some quite derogatory and demeaning content that painted him as the worst Captain and example to mankind ever to pull on a footy boot. It was totally unedifying and telling.

Ever since I've been on here there's been a general under appreciation of what he's done for the club both as a player and a Captain.

That's how I see it. Likewise it'd be a crucial factor for us this year if he could be fit and firing. He's not getting any younger so I'm hopeful . I'd like to see him relinquish the captaincy so he can focus solely in his footy in what is going to be his last year I would imagine.

Barring unforeseen circumstances and injuries this looks like the year where we have most of the pieces in place.
I'll put my hand up, I'm one who thinks we should change captaincy for this season.

Like Fyfe and Kotchin, I think you need to change captaincy and have a transition period of a year before the sitting Captain retires the next year or just after.

Unlike Joel Selwood or Michael Voss, Zorko is not the captain type that puts the team on his back and carries it in the tough periods of the season. Lachie Neal did that last year but I'm not saying he is the replacement, I'm unsure.

A captain at this level as well as being the leader of the team on the field, has to be a good media performer and role model to the supporters especially the young kids just taking up the game - in my mind Zorko is not, and has shown some behaviours we don't want in junior football.

For me - it's just the right time for a change, I think we will be playing finals for the next 5 years at least and we should choose a new leader now to go through that period.

Zorks is a firey little bugger, was with us in the tough times and got us through, it's time he did the team thing and I, with everyone else, wish him all the honours and life membership as a good captain.

If Nic Daicos continues his 1st year form i doubt anyone makes him look ordinary.
Agree that Will Ashcroft plays round 1 and most of the year.
Daicos and Ashcroft are lucky in that they both went to clubs that made the 8 in 2022 and both get good on field player support.
We all have high hopes for Will. He could end up being the Lions 2nd rising star winner.
I hope he gets through his 1st year injury free and along with Dunkley solves our midfield class depth.
Don’t forget Lewy Taylor’s rising star win!

Definitely.

Throw Lyons into that category as well.
Yeap I don't see the need to be playing injured or underdone players, with our current list. IMO Dev should have got more games when Lyons was struggling. Payne arguably should have got some earlier games, especially when Dizzy was struggling. Dizzy has just signed a 3 or possibly 4 year deal, so I expect him to step up and improve on the majority of last years performances.

Thanks for the correction.
I did forget about Lewy Taylor and not all that long ago either being in 2014.
Also, i should have mentioned the first 2 rising stars were Nathan Buckley and Chris Scott for Brisbane Bears

Did that include illness? As in the Weagles & covid.
I don't know.
Just a comment i made on briztoon post that looks like he got from social media.
We need a bit more information on what the criteria they used for those figures.
Either way it is better to be closer to the least injuries than the most like the Eagles.

I also wonder if it is just injured players during the actual year of 2022.
For example, Hippy missed the first 8 games, but his injury was in 2021. Is the 8 games counted or not.
Keidean Coleman & Dev Robertson were injured in a preseason game v Dogs.
Coleman missed the first 5 games. Is this counted or not.
Dev did not play till round 4, are his 3 missed AFL games counted. But Dev played R1 in the VFL.

As the sheet said, injuries to best 22 players.

I don’t believe Dev would be counted as a best 22 player.

Hippy, Daniher, Coleman, Lyons all should have been.

I don’t know who they would have counted as our second winger. Probably Mitch Robertson, and my guess is they would not have counted games missed by players being dropped or rested.

Mitch had a bung calf or something there at one point but still played in the VFL.
Injury or soft drop, either way at that time he should have been considered best 22 considering he had played every game that he was available since 2014 or whenever he come onboard.

I would love Nick Daicos on our list. Future champion....puzzled why you down play that???
It was tongue in cheek, I think some picked up on it. Just a bit over the media comparison of Will and Nick, generally by lazy journos that know no better. No doubt it will continue throughout 2023.

Different players with different strengths, I struggle to understand why Nick is the benchmark for Will. Can’t wait to see Will perform for the Lions & forge his own career & identify in the game.
