From discussions with a Freo coach
  • Cox has come back in the best shape of his career and is already fair ahead of his normal training block
  • JOM has impressed and will slot straight into Mundys spot
  • Can hardly believe how well Jackson moves and the things he does, only just begun to touch his potential. Players love him
Missed this post before, not sure I have enough paper towels to clean up the drool.... :tearsofjoy: Some kind of 'viewer discretion' should be advised or else might feint.......

Ah yes - the midsummer break. Historically the best time to be a Freo fan. Endless optimism, no chance of injuries (music festivals withstanding), all those new, shiny gifts (trades/draftees) ready to be unboxed in the coming months, and a prized list of TTHD winners from the pre-Christmas cardio sessions at the top of mind.

Hook it up to my veins!

Talking about aerobic fitness, here's an interesting study from Nature. 2 months post COVID, professional soccer players still had reduced aerobic capacity. Small to medium effects, but in a game of small margins, protecting players from COVID could make a big difference. Anyone know if the club is onto this sort of thing? Aerobic fitness in professional soccer players post-COVID

Short of a bubble you can't keep them from Covid, club won't be able to do anything

Not true. I've not isolated the whole time, have worked with COVID patients the whole time (as a doctor) and have not caught COVID. It's about making appropriate risk decisions - socialising outdoors (easy to do in WA), wearing appropriate masks, indoor air ventilation and filtration for indoor spaces etc.

Educate the players on the risks and how to avoid them, fit check masks, provide appropriate masks etc, provide air purification units for home use (really quite cheap), make sure the club indoor spaces are safe etc. Genuinely not that hard or expensive.

And to be clear, the risks are pretty horrific and affect every organ; it's not mild, and it's not a f***ing flu

Those just shy of two dozen players studied had almost a month off their training levels and noticed a drop in performance...

I would expect that if players health mandates a reduction in loading post two weeks of couch that it would be treated like the back end of a bad hammy.

It's not something I'm worried about. I'm more worried about susceptibility to posterior chain injury from the resting on the couch for a week watching Wednesday than I am about a reduction in capacity to deliver after returning to full training post infection.

Yeah because players are going to love wearing fit tested masks and avoiding unventilated indoor venues for the rest of their playing careers. Won't effect their enjoyment of life at all

It's a small study, but consistent with others showing reduced lung capacity and myocardial fibrosis even post mild or asymptomatic infections in people without ongoing symptoms.

Rather amusing that those players get COVID, miss a week then come back with limited aerobic capacity due to only have 1-2 weeks off.
Any respiratory infection such as cold/flu impacts performance. Professional sport is so competitive that clubs canā€™t afford to give players 2-4 weeks off and rehab back to optimal levels. Instead get back on the field with 60-70% capacity. Itā€™s a money game.

There's plenty of wiggle room in a side with mature bodies to carry a player who can't run their usual minutes too.

I mean I have been out drinking weekly and not done any of those things and still haven't had covid

That and all the other things of life, full time work, sports etc

You could just be lucky like me, you literally can't avoid it if you're gonna get it

surely a doctor knows that its unavoidable if you want to live a normal life though

Players are supposed to not have a beer indoors at a venue anymore?

More along the lines of covid can have long term affects. Yet some people refuse to believe it based on thier grievance with the government and their understanding of covid based on their 5 minute youtube search.

oh okay, yeah I wasn't arguing that point, suppose others were

My point on it being unavoidable stands tho
