Metres gained is worth noting. Here are some of the top 15 who all make around 480-560 metres gained with their disposals. Quality in terms of mids and defenders.

Daicos
Gulden
J Dawson
Petracca
Rozee
Warner
J Short
L Ryan
Clayton Oliver
H Young
Parish
Merrett

To give some perspective, a lot of our defenders in 2023 are very low on metres gained this season meaning lots of control dinky sideways kicks which leads to slow movement up the ground and a congested forward line.

It's a great stat to identify how attacking your side is.

oh...............now I understand............

metres gained imo is the most useless and yet overused stat in AFL
Could be as it is a matter of opinion. But funnily enough, Austin recruited Zac Williams, Adam Saad and Cerra who all had really high metres gained in the 12 months leading up to their trade. More interestingly, one of the defenders they replaced was SPS who had a horrific metres gained history with his dinky sideways kicks.

While true for Skinny, he’s remembered as a forward. As for Hoops, he played his last three years as a forward. Just because you write something with an air of authority doesn’t make it true.
Words can barely describe how ironic this comment is given Houlihan played most of his last 3 seasons in the midfield, with some time - even the odd full game - up forward. Went from HB to wing to on-ball at the end.

Before they called it the 'Simpson role', it was called the 'Lappin role', though he had stints on the wing, which is where he played back at the Saints. But sure, yes, you've got me...

I think the original comment that kicked this off was referring to Boyd as an old school back pocket type, but the game prefers to move past those as you want to generate as much overlap run as possible. Boyd's a bit of a relic - albeit a talented one - unless he can start getting his fitness to the point where he starts to get 5-10 more disposal opportunities in the game, through a combination of ground ball gets and handball receives.

I was as excited as anyone with him being picked up in 2021, but he's lost a yard and built up his body too much. Needs to swing back in the other direction so he's nimble.

I didn't have Dow and Hewett far apart given we probably need to cover for the blocks of Kennedy and not just the quick hands, but I overlooked him in my suggestions in favour of the exciting form of Cowan. In the end he's made it in, and sadly Dow might be sub again, though probably Hollands. The rest makes sense, and we're probably going to see Marchbank get a game.

On the Port side of things, people aren't looking at the changes properly:

Lord for Dixon - not the change you want to be making, but ensures Finlayson and Marshall play forward the entire game, and alongside SPP that pressures Marchbank or McGovern in combination with a rampant midfield
Burgoyne for Burton - rewarding form and a distribution upgrade off half-back, Burton may not be the most physical defender, but Jase is still a rake of a kid
Jonas for McKenzie - like for like defensive upgrade
Duursma* for Rioli - athletically not like for like, but both opportunists who can surprise aerially
Mead for Horne-Francis - it's a downgrade, but will play a similar contested style in a mid-forward split
Lycett for Hayes - like for like ruck upgrade

3 forced changes aside, this is squad rotation and utilisation at its finest, and something we should have learned a long time ago. Keep in mind Duursma could easily wind up in another role on the night as well.

I really hope we've got a bonafide plan for winning this game through a balance of attack and defence, and a plan for smartly resting some players the week after. If we don't, we're going to get hit like a freight train from then on, and we'll have nothing left in the tank.

They aren't the biggest outs. Half are omitted. They also get their number 1 ruck and their captain back.

For a team who is pretty much equal top, they can simply beat us because their game is stronger. Should we beat them, it would a big achievement and definitely not a given.

They are big outs because it’s 1/3 of their team that has won so many games together … continuity is massive for teams winning so many in a row.. I also get the feeling we have turned a corner while only beating middle ranged teams …,We play anything like last week or the 2 before that we should win ..it’s my opinion ..put it this way If we lose I would look at this game as one we should have really won before the bounce … you don’t that’s cool

Ports next month is tough starting this week seeing as you have hit some form. We have a few sore bodies, checking out open trading this morning with the kids so will take a good look at some of the players.

Dixon was off before the break, no amount of rest helps him too much.

Your tall forward will trouble us.

Not sure how we copped the draw we
Finishing 11th last year.

It’s a great metric imo but not for every player/role. Its relevance really turns on what a team is asking a player to do in game….but tbh we should think about every single stat in that context, bar maybe defensive stats.

Stats need to be viewed with vision to determine real effectiveness

Metres gained - if a player has 30 kicks at 50 metres to a contest, (opposition may win the ball back every time)he records 1500 metres gained, 100% efficiency

Same scenario, but he hits a teammate 25 metres away, records half the metres gained but it is more effective despite the same efficiency

It's time we separated the last three games from the 14(?) before them...

Two different sides (God only knows why!).

Case in point was Ryan's game last week.

Most of his kicks were long balls to a contest many of which we ended up winning.

I think they need a different weighting to measure kicking efficiency, if your objective is to kick it wide and long to a contest to get it out of your defensive zone, it doesnt feel right to assign that a ranking the same as a 40 metre bullet to a team mate.

Win or lose doesn’t chnage that they can rest whoever they want the week after.

Then there’s a block of 5 games. Any amateur (let alone pro) would know you can do a 6 week block without overloading.

To my eyes they’re doing a much better job and credit to them.
