Weitering to Hollands to Docherty to Acres to goal. Will never, ever, forget this sequence. Carlton folklore.
Ollie in that last 2 minutes.
He's been good all year. Stiff to be dropped I thought.
Yes I know he was sub and fresh legs.

But that was class and guts twice.
Hes going to be a champion mark my words.

I'm still trying to work out how both Acres and McGovern got on their own in our forward line once Weiters took the intercept mark backward of wing to switch play. Melbourne wingers just let them go it seems.
Also , the cerra smother with 20 seconds to go was massive. If he doesn't smother that , melbourne were out on their own with a loose man forward.
So much dissecting.
McGovern followed Fritsch down to deny them an extra. Clearly planned.

Acres just did what Acres does. Ran everyone into the ground.

Just watching replay & the no Melbourne ruck.
We need a set tactical play drilled in - there is nothing stopping the ruckman running in hard & changing starting point as soon as he hears the word “no ruck”.
Start point is very short and then run for the ball (look over shoulder) & hit it at pace - he cannot be blocked or impeded in anyway, he then hits the ball with momentum & should be able to clear it 50m or hit up a target.
Never seen anyone do it but it should work - rules state he can’t be blocked or tackled straight away, moving with momentum just amplifies that advantage.
This is either genius or stupidity- maybe both

Ah Blake Acres bloody hell, classic money ball trade if I've ever seen one. A future third rounder. He's kicked you into a prelim with another vintage finals performance

To qoute the late Clinton Grybas 'Its Grand larceny, its daylight robbery, its ronnie biggs, its ned kelly. its the greatest thieving you'll ever see' (3AW 2005 syd v cats prelim)

Up the baggers

Watched the game with my 21-year-old daughter in the middle of the entitled Melbourne MCC members. Can't say how much fun it was hugging my daughter, singing the song loud and proud as they quickly shuffled off with their blankets and picnic baskets.

Now, that was intense! From the first bounce to the siren at the end of the game it was too very well matched teams going toe-to-toe. I must admit we both thought we were gone with 5 minutes to go and needing two goals. But, no, this team does not lie down. They fight it out until the end.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The leadership of our experienced warriors
    • Weiters (monstered his opponents - cool under pressure)
    • Cripps (smashed into all night by Melbourne, kept getting up and having an influence)
    • Doc (banged up but pivotal in so many 2nd half moments)
  • WALSH - what more can be said
  • TDK - those first two goals were delivered under immense pressure
  • Pitt/TDK combo - worked big Max over all game, ending in a win for us
  • Kennedy matched up on Lever. After a shaky start, he applied the clamps on Lever, ending in Lever being less influential than usual. That was a great goal too, he is a beautiful set shot at goal
  • Newman - continuing that AA form. He really is so reliable
  • Hollands last quarter. Yes, he had fresh legs, but boy, didn't he use them! Watching him tearing up and down the ground to help in defence and provide options moving the ball was delightful.
  • That last play.
    • Weiters being game-smart enough to know he had to switch
    • Hollands taking a good mark under pressure and being game-smart enough to know he had to move it on quickly (with under a minute to go)
    • Doc being clever enough to work his opponent under the ball then kick it long to a 2 on 1
    • Acres work-rate to be in a position to take that mark
    • Acres smarts to play on and kick the goal rather than having to go back and kick a set shot under so much pressure
    • The work-rate and game sense of McGovern and Kemp to have ran all the way down to our goal square to provide options
  • In essence, our coaching was first rate, and our players seem to now know how to handle the pressure of the big moments.
THAT ROAR AT THE END OF THE GAME WAS SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET. It shook the stadium.

Oh, and my daughter actually thanked me for being a Carlton fan..with the biggest smile on her face (as did my other carlton supporting daughter who I caught up with after the game).

Tell me if this is weird.

At 3 quarter time a bird s*** on my pants my daughter who was with me said it is a sign of good luck.Ok let’s hope it comes true.We we’re in section M18.

My other mates daughter who were in section M27 had the same thing happen!

Now surely that’s no just coincidence.

I will be releasing a flock of birds next to your seats at 3QT at every match from now on...

Kemp down there as well.
