VFL 2023 Swans Reserves

Our best today were Bartholomeus and Shipley. Besides Sheldrick, they are currently better players than any of our young listed players, none of who are anywhere near afl standard. Clarke was rusty to start but worked his way into the game. Hopefully with players returning, can't see any from today forcing their way into ones.

Even Norf saw Clarke as our only AFL listed player in the VFL “bests” on Saturday. But they’re right.

Two points:

1. I see no match report from the Swans as yet (poor form - particularly as I’m keen to know what the nature of Shedrick’s injury is); and

2. I’d really hoped a few of our younger players might be showing a bit more at this stage.

Completely agree on both points. The Gus breathing issue is of concern. I am really irritated with the AFL around the State leagues column. The cretin intern was critical of Gus, noting his low stats.(when he had been taken off the ground).

Not one of the new kids, maybe Owen, has shown very much at all.

I really do not see why the fuss about sheather.

I'm not sure you can expect much from the new kids in an environment where nearly all the listed/experienced players that would usually be there are gone. VFL is a big step up for them, at least the raw ones we just drafted.

If you watched VFL in 2021, you'd understand about Sheather. He was injured much of last year, I think also a disrupted pre season. Time will tell whether it's just that we're only 3 games in, or if his potential has been hobbled.

Yep, I did. Liked the speed and toughness. Anyway he needs to show more and win some contested footy.

Magor looks good when he has the footy but again he needs to find more of it.

Aaron Francis was the major benefiter with injuries impacting Sydney’s tall forwards, kicking three goals while Ryan Clarke was strong in his first match at senior level, returning from injury with 25 disposals and seven tackles.

Lachlan Rankin had 13 touches and Cooper Vickery finished with 10 disposals and a goal.

Rookies Lachlan McAndrew (13 disposals, 30 hitouts), Hugo Hall-Kahan (13 disposals, one goal) and Jaiden Magor (eight disposals, one goal) did their best in the loss.
No mention of Gus :(

This is just so disappointing.

There is a funny typo in the list of goal of goal kickers with Jaiden Magor referred to as Maiden Magor. The poor kid is in for some ribbing.

Sheather seemed to be getting back to the form that had him noticed in 2021. Won't be long before he is pushing again.

Was impressed by Magor who was played in the midfield. Not just a goalsneak. Tackles well, is quick, is a good kick and has a good tank. Kicked a set shot goal from just outside the 50. Not this year though. Needs to grow a bit.

Ooo I don’t agree on Sheather.

He was starting to look promising in 2021 - but so far this year can’t get near the footy in the VFL. However, some latitude is certainly due, given he basically lost a whole year.

I’m a bit underwhelmed by Rankin’s development, but do acknowledge that it’s probably hard for younger players to shine in a side that isn’t really competitive.

The first year players - too early to draw conclusions, but none have stood out to my eye thus far. Konstanty will be the fascinating one once he appears.

It is really difficult to judge first-year players in the VFL as these are kids who are only 18 and are playing against hardened players. If they played for a stand-alone VFL side they would probably be in the development squad that would play a lot in their local league while stepping up for the occasional VFL game. They might have the talent but the development is not there yet.

I guess the difference between the previous scenario and ours is that we play them every week in order to fast-track their development so we need to expect a gap in performance - especially in the early stages. In addition, it was noted that there weren't many senior players playing in that team, so these kids are probably struggling to cope with the bigger bodies against them.

This means that we need to be patient and just let them develop from a low base. Personally, I will be happy watching for the occasional green shoots we may see from these kids that shows us what the recruiters saw, but I don't expect to see many at first.

I watched him closely in the game. He clearly wasn't a standout, but he seems to be getting back to where he used to be in terms of match fitness, which is all that is holding him back.

He hasn't lost any speed as a result of his injury and his reading of the play is fine. I don't think the coaches are asking a lot of him until he is fully fit. But I will make the call that if Heeney is injured his will be one of the names put forward to replace him.

What is the rule now. It used to be that Cat B players could not play unless elevated to the senior list ie if a spot is available due to another player put on the LTI. Has the rule changed? Can Cat B players just get selected to play now?

I might sound barking mad here but I'd maybe like to see some of the players who will literally never see a second of midfield time at AFL level used in the midfield in the VFL. I watch players like Rankin, Hall-Kahan, Sheather etc. and there are long stretches of games where it just doesn't go near them. They're playing within the parameters of their roles but the action so often doesn't involve them. We don't have the talent across the park in this reserves team to bring these sorts of role players into the game, so I feel like we need to bring the game to the role players. Put them on the ball and let them actually get some touches so we can see if there's something to work with.

Magor became noticeable for the first time so far once he went into the mids on the weekend, and while I understand he's a bit more acquainted with the midfield than some of the others, if it gets them involved and we can actually see what they're capable of, I'd be all for it. Otherwise I think it is going to be a long year of waiting for these players to show something from very limited opportunities.

Just my idea.

At my local club on the weekend I had an interesting conversation. Our reserves team was getting spanked and the player I thought had the most potential seemed to be wasted on the wing and hardly got to see the ball. I thought we should instead use him off the HBF as he would get more of the ball and be able to use his good disposal skills, and I was pretty happy about it when that is exactly what happened in the last quarter. I then complimented the reserves coach after the game for making a very astute change (which was my way of encouraging him to leave him there), however he told me that he would prefer to have that player off the HBF but the seniors see him as a wingman and therefore want him to remain on the wing so that he can slot straight into that role if he is called upon.

It made me realise that the positions played by our reserves players may not correspond to where the ball may be going or where we think they may have the biggest impact, but instead they are selected to play there anyway because they need to learn the position and the role - even when things are not going our way.

We need to remember that the VFL team exists to develop players into AFL players, not necessarily to win games (although that would obviously be very nice as well).

I think there is a level of similarity between half back flank, wing and high half forward that development wise any of the three would do. Rotating briefly into the midfield for say 10-20% of ToG would do many players good developmentally, depending on their physical maturity.
They won't develop in the role if they don't see the ball.

As you know, it's a balance...

Damien Truslove's takes from the NM game;

Positive was the way the players responded after the 1st Qtr, good 3rd Qtr, but by the end of that qtr players were exhausted.

Standout;
'Lachlan McAndrew, his performances all year have been consistent and he has been really good in the ruck. He has been winning his hitouts, his follow up has been good and he has really taken a step forward this year and he is heading in the right direction. If he keeps going the way he is going an opportunity will arise for him at AFL level at some point so he has been really good.'

All the other guys who got a call out are VFL listed players (Collis, Haley, Geddes) and Shipley who 'has probably been our best player for the first three weeks'.

Specifically asked about Clarke & Francis and both got a tick.

Mentioned the upcoming game against the Northern Bullants and stated 'It’s always good and exciting to travel and bond as a group, so we will get down to Melbourne on Saturday and look forward to a big hitout on Sunday.'

Excited to watch Konstanty, Cleary & Kirk :) and the rest of course. Agree with bedders that I think Haley definitely belongs in our best reserves side, so I wonder if there was something else behind that.

maybe they see Konstanty replacing him. Agree Haley has been good and has added some experience and smarts.

Coach hinted at different roles. That will be interesting.
