Yes married a week ago , more concerned about signing a contract before tonight's deadline.
I’m not across all the rules, but we don’t have to have Zorko signed by today.

He could re-sign straight after the draft, as far as I’m aware.

Would give us an extra list spot, to package our two third round picks together, to then trade up for one of Gold Coast’s late second round picks.

We don't have to sign him until the final list lodgement, but we only get the extra list spot if we actually delist him at this list lodgement.

Clubs have to use at least three picks at the national draft, however that number can include upgraded players from their rookie lists. They must notify the AFL by next Tuesday (31-10-23) of their plans to upgrade rookies as part of their draft hand.

Could also be picked up by another club although doubtful

Correct, the question still remains why hasn't he signed on for the extra year ? I'm pretty sure the word weeks ago was all but done.

a) he may have signed and it just hasn't been announced yet.
b) he may not have signed yet because the timing doesn't matter if both have agreed, and as pointed out he's been otherwise occupied.
c) OMG DELISTED -or- OMG NEW CLUB AS FA.

I'm betting not c).

If he decides to retire we still get that spot back anyway. All good.

I don't think he'll go anywhere else this late. Club Legend, wants a premiership and we're pretty close.

Valuable experience but I really hope he's no longer best 22 by midway through the season at the latest

I think he'll be very aware his role is no longer guaranteed and am sure that was why the agreement took as long as it did.

Zorko's 2023 season was good for that small forward with a little midfield time role.
Old man time is catching up but if he gets through the preseason without any injury niggles, he will be good to have on our list.

It's then up to the younger players to show they deserve a spot.
However, we don't have many players for this position sitting outside the best 23.

So possibly some positional changes in 2024 for some guys like Sharp, Prior, Answerth,
I also would not rule out Zorko moving to half back with Wilmot moving to wing.

Which players is Zorko keeping out?
Zorko forward.: Lohmann,
Zorko Halfback: Answerth, Michael, Madden, Brain, Prior,

Trading in a small forward that's AFL ready would help.
Someone like Shaun Mannagh from Werribee would fit the bill to a tee should the club think he is a suitable fit.

I think probably the best way to use Zorko is to be giving him occasionally breaks during the season - or possibly playing as sub. The extra early bye with this Round 0 stuff will be useful but probably scheduling them in every 4-5 weeks generally.
