“There has to be a way for West Coast to give up the No.1 pick to Melbourne, the Eagles to guarantee access to key back Daniel Curtin with pick 2 as well as significantly stiffening their draft hand, North Melbourne to secure an extra early selection by shuffling down to picks 3 and 4 and everyone winning.”

My first instinct at this suggestion is to scoff: what would be better than 2 and 3? If we want pick 4 so much, why don’t we just deal with GC ourselves using our f1 AND keep one of Reid/Curtin?

Is there any plausible scenario where we benefit from participating in a mega deal with Melbourne?

The only straw I can grasp is if maybe McKay actually does stay, and we want more than just pick 2 in the top 10, but we don’t want to use our f1, and if we don’t have Curtin high up on our board…maybe?

3,4,5,6,7.
Make it happen west coast and Melb. or **** off.

I honestly can’t see one. We’d want to be well and truly over compensated for 1) not tanking for pick 1 and 2) giving up pick 2. Like I’m talking absolutely stupid overs

Example: my above suggestion of picks 3 through 7 😉

If we are going to draft Watson and McKercher at picks 2 & 3 and Melbourne presents a trade where we still get those players but also get another pick then it would be a win for us to take it.

I don't know if any of that is possible or true but its a scenario.

Yet old mate is talking about “significantly strengthening” the eagles draft hand, as if it’s possible to do that for them and us at the same time. I’m not sure how you start from that position unless you’re thinking about it from Melbournes perspective exclusively, and worrying about the details later.

In that case, we’d need to also be 100% confident that Hawthorn is going to take Duursma instead of Mckercher. It just feels like a house of cards.

Are clubs open with one another on who they will be trading for or would we be just assuming who the hawks take at that pick? We traded down last year knowing the giants would take Cadman.

I dunno the extent to which clubs are confident of each others plans. It made sense for GWS to inform WC and NM because all three parties got what they wanted by sharing their plans. What advantage does Hawthorn get from telling North whether they’d prefer Duursma or McKercher?

We would have to be overcompensated. If this deal - predicated on WC wanting a specific player and not willing to take on Reid - was to happen we would arguably be better off just doing it to get Reid if we rated him high enough. Scenario for me would have to be that we rate roughly equal with a few other players and would be getting a fat kicker back - otherwise we are just letting Melbourne get the best player for a minor penalty.

Yeah let’s help the godees get Reid - hand over JVR and pick 5 for pick 2

The funny thing is the Melbourne draft hand is being wildly overrated. It's pick 5 (6) and two picks in all likelihood in the 18-22 region. They wouldn't be able to get 2 with that let alone 1. There's no player involved to force this move. It's delusional for them to think they're in the market for Reid.

This year their first will be pushed out my Mckay compo, 3 GC academy pick, Dogs FS and possible Hawks FS

If they win the flag that pick becomes 24, even a prelim finish pushes it to 20.

Yeah, that's what I mean... that Freo pick didn't become the asset they thought it would either.

No way the Eagles even consider that for Reid and there's no part of it that makes it palatable for us to drop down the order. There'd have to be a bonafide best 12-15 player coming with it.

We clearly want to get involved for Reid at some stage of this as well so it's on the Eagles if they want to draft him (I have no doubt they still would).

Agree. They'd have to be giving up a good (young) player with a pick to even be in the conversation. Most likely scenario is that WC just take Reid, the only easy trade for WC that guarantees their presumed result is with us - and once they start that conversation it's hard to see how we don't see their complete lack of leverage.
