Surely we delist Jones. Can't build a team with players who can't get on the park with any consistency. Maybe it's a wait and see how the trade and draft period pans out. But he's OOC and surely hanging by a thread.
wouldnt disagree with you,but appears hes staying on,i truly believe if hes not available for selection round 1 he needs to be taken out of st.kilda calculations and plonked at sandy for the year & delisted, enoughs enough with this guy,if they want to talk up ruthless, our #3 is a good place to start

I'd just delist him now. But if RTB is a fan that's unlikely to happen. Am just tired of hanging on to perpetually injured or ordinary players who are towards the end of their careers in the hope they will come good. We need to get ruthless.

i feel your pain, bandying around the word"ruthless"will mean diddly squat if z.jones isnt available round 1 & goes through another season unavailable for half or more of the games

Hopefully we get a win with Coff and he stays. Top 25 seems fair for gresh at minimum

That’s an awful deal. Turning him into a second round pick would be a massive downgrade.

No way would we delist Jones.

Harsh way to look at it but, given his injuries, I doubt any other club would look at him, so that means we can offer a one year contract with a games based trigger for second at a very cheap rate.

Worst case scenario is that it costs us $300K if he doesn't play at all. Best case is we get known AFL standard outside run for not a lot.

The thing with Jones is that he has something that we don't have much of and seemingly isn't easily replaceable. I don't think it's a big issue giving him another year to try make it happen, especially when Ross clearly likes him. As we've seen with the cuts already, there's other players that were on the list that weren't good enough footballers. He's not in the way of recruiting anyone else this off season.

I'd like to keep Coffield but it really depends on the club and his manager.

Coffield got a brand new contract after his 2020 season

We don't know what the terms are. He could be on a very decent salary and his output since then may not have matched expectations.

He may be expecting more than what the club is prepared to give.

I don’t disagree but bare in mind we’re already shallow on midfield depth, even more so with Bytel delisted.
I’d keep my powder dry with Jones..one year deal on modest salary and put it on him to work his arse off to get his body right!

Yeah I agree that he's worth having on the list if he's fit. But him staying fit seems is a big if. Good luck to him. I like him when he's on. But being chronically injured in his late 20's doesn't bode well for getting back to consistent, quality on-field contributions.

We do carry a lot of perpetually injured though.
Jones
The D-Train
Billo
Cough 😷
Hayesy
Bytel- gone
That’s a lot of talent soaking up a lot of salary cap that we rarely have access to.
Is it unusual in the afl scheme of things?

His last injury was someone stepping on/trapping his foot and doing a ligament that way. Despite him doing hammys, he always mangages to rehab them enough to get back to his best and play. I dont doubt Lyon looks at that kind of work ethic and would want to keep him.

If we are talking about de-listings based purely on injury then Mackenzie is the main candidate with his calf issues at this point looking like they will be perpeptual.

I don't know why it's any more stupid than trading anyone else. It's just an opinion. They are probably all guys who have value higher than what their output will be in a few years. If we really believe that we aren't winning a flag with this list it's that older crew that you trade.

I wouldn't trade any of the older good players because I think we are already a thin list but I can understand why some want to.
People say they want to see a ruthless approach, but then don't want 30 year olds traded because they're popular or good clubsmen.

They're all decent players so I wouldn't want us to move them on unless it's to improve us going forward, but if Hawthorn can salary dump Hodge and Lewis then we should keep an open mind… there's a reason why they've won 12 flags since our only premiership.

I'm sure pies fans were upset when they moved on Treloar, Stephenson, Grundy… but they did what they had to do to get the list right.

We clearly need young talent via the draft so need to keep an open mind about how we can make it happen.

Weird to sell off Coffield and keep Jones though. Jones has been injured more than he’s played. Coffield has years left if we get his body right. Can’t see Jones ever playing another full season.

Collingwood weren't being ruthless, they were digging themselves out of not being able to do maths.

They were happy to bottom out. We can’t sell patience any more.

Yeah I agree there, if Jones being kept was the reason we lost Coffield that would be disappointing. I'm not sure the two are related though? We should easily be able to pay both a reasonable salary based on what they've offered the last couple of years.

To keep De Goey and bring in players like Mitchell, Hill & McStay they had to move Grundy on who was eating up 10% of their cap. Pretty big call to move on a top 2-3 ruck of the comp.

Doesn't change the fact they mismanaged their spending. They were more than happy to move Grundy on knowing he didn't fit their game style under Fly, and is not a top 3 ruck anymore.

Aside from Howard and letting Gresh walk, I don't see who we have that will net us anything.

Jones has just had a knee injury, it would be a huge gamble to keep him given he hasn't even played 50% of the games since he came across to us.

Who cares if Jones and Dmac are in the rehab group for another 12 months. The upside is that they aren’t, and they’re best 25. The downside if we sign them for a further twelve months is the take they spot of a kid who’s unlikely to ever make the grade.
There are A LOT of spots on the list, we can carry a couple should they positively impact at their best.

Gresh for a second rounder, yuck. Hope we match and keep him if that’s the compo. Had a down year and still kicked 21 goals, second in our score involvements (only Higgo had more).

His kicking is frustrating as fk but he is still damaging forward of the ball, one of the few match winners we have at the moment. I thought he had checked out mid year but he really lifted defensively late in the year as shown by 7 tackles vs GWS and 6 vs Richmond a few weeks earlier.

I may be overrating our own players but I just don’t see the appeal of getting rid of someone that makes us a better side for another second rounder.

As gringo2011 has commented we’ve taken a similar approach 13 years ago and look how that worked out. Don’t want to see us do a Freo and regress after making finals.

Half the injuries next year + natural progression of the youth and we should feature in September again, an inform Gresh could be difference.

With the James Jordan rumour, i watched footage from some of his games in 2022. He has some assets which makes me a bit more excited about this news.

It would be a hard team to break into the midfield. It will be interesting to see what happens under our coaching group. As I don't rate Goodwin as a good coach.
