I have felt we have had too many 190cm+ mid/fwd types players in the front half of the ground and has impacted our presence at ground level both offensively and defensively. We were badly exposed last night with speed and agility when GWS rebounded off turnover. They are marking types that are flying with king, hammer.

We need to spread them out or play less of them next year. Don’t get me wrong, they are all very good prospects, just can’t all be played in the same line all the time. They need to transition into playing mid and wing roles and roadster through the forward line. I also don’t see their transition to the midfield being fast tracked playing half forward in the 1’s just to fit them in.

Gws had 3 good pressure smalls playing yesterday plus Toby Greene, we had one.

I would keep Tom Campbell as our back up ruck. His VFL form has been really good? Not a bad option if Marshall goes down and gives a bit more time for Heath to develop.

What’s the point replacing him with another Paul Hunter type?

Fair points. Maybe Camaniti doesn’t come in and you play smaller in the forward line. Problem was our small forwards were poor. I think the loss will be a good reality check and it shows what we need recruitment wise. If Saints made it to the prelims, for example, it might of glossed over some of the weaknesses and made them think they were closer than what they really are.

Always going to be a developmental year. It exceeded my expectations making to the finals.

Do we throw our hat in the ring for Ben McKay

Not for the 800k+ contract that's beating reported. He's barely average as a FB. Would rather get Tomlinson or keep Doogs as depth.

Henry is a good get. Would be a nice rotation with Hill and Gresh at half forward and the wing. Not sure I want Gresh to leave now, he busted his arse yesterday.

If he's not in our best 26 in 2024 then we must have some solid players coming in.

I'm not sold on Dow but he's a Swan Hill boy so I'll give him a chance if he comes across. If he frees Steele up to push forward or do a tagged ng job then that's fine. Fingers crossed Steele is fit next year.

We need a forward who can chop RoMa out in the ruck. FMD I would have loved McLean from the Swans. Perfect player for us IMO. King, Sharman + R/F option is the way to go.

Hammer needs a few years in the gym.

So much to build on though. Can't wait to see what the list looks like for Round 1, 2024!

Any dollar or draft pick not spent on a mid or running player is a complete waste of time. SOS wouldn’t have been able to stop GWS with the way the ball was going down there yesterday. We need more games at the MCG to make this more obvious.

I agree. Our most pressing need is mids. Spending big on a full back won’t solve that. If our midfield improves it also helps take pressure off the backline because the ball wont come down as easily.
It would love to see Owens and Windhager as full time mids from next year. In three years Owens could be the best player in the comp.
Hopefully Keeler or Heath become the chop out for Marshall, or even Hayes in the short term.
Really looking forward to next year.I think making finals will give the players a lot of belief. Being beaten pretty convincingly will make them very hungry.

Lets not forget Mattaes got selected as the youngest player in the draft, and followed up playing a full season of AFL. with just the bye as his only break in a long season.
That's a huge effort for such a young player
Spot on. Looking a bit tired the last few weeks, but another preseason and another season in the gym will help immensely. I will back him to have a better season next year and avoid the second year blues. Some of the commentary on here about him is starting to get ridiculous now.

If Paddy Dow comes in I think Seb Ross will be very nervous. I think he has a greater impact on the stoppages than Ross did if he plays yesterday.

If Jack Bytel is behind Hunter in the midfield then I think he is gone at his exit interview.

I've warmed to Dow, I think he makes sense if cheap. He's worth a roll of the dice.

Midfield depth and adds competition for midfield spots. What’s not to like? Only 23, he could be one of those late bloomers who hits his strides from 25+. A bit like Montagna and Dmac.

Definitely worth a punt for the low cost.

Marshall is good at getting the ball, but that’s because our mids can’t… Marshall’s long bomb / hack kick from clearances are really a liability sometimes. He needs to learn how to hand ball it someone on the outside streaming towards goal… part of the reason why our inside 50 efficiency is so low
you guys talking about our long bombs/hack kicks, why is it i watch game after game and watch pinpointed passes into forward 50 get marked by the opposition at will?i dont mind the chaos ball/bombs/hack kicks getting cut off half as much as i do the supposed short passes

its so frustrating watching that crap week in week out that id almost be happy to see them worm burn the ball into the forward line each time

the other thing id like the coaching staff to get into their heads is IN RANGE OF GOAL,SEE GOAL,KICK FOR GOALif we kick a behind so be it,but ffs cut the intercept marks in our forward 50 out or down to a minimum

Henry is a pure wingman not a back man, Sinclair is more important running off hbf we need to draft or trade in midfielders not move 1 of our HB playmakers.

I watched his Carlton highlights and he's a bomb dumper which will frustrate people but he's quick and good at winning a contest and loose ball from that small sample size. He looks less of a liability outside the VFL where his disposal is awful- nearly 70% turn overs in some games. AFL level players read it better it seems so it works out a lot better. I'm not sure we can turn ourselves into a clean slick unit so have to just work with what we have. His pace and contest work is good. Let's hope he can raise his production at AFL level. If he does he looks a Seb Ross type but with a touch more pace.

So we'll be starting with picks 12, 31, 50 and 86 plus all the futures. Pick 12 to Freo - no chance, no shot, no way, no how. Bell will probably stall to see what other picks we bring in through other trades in the hope of getting something bundled up with or instead of pick 31 or future 2nd.

Surely Dow is a future 3rd at best?

If Stocker can build his tank in the off season, and Dow can improve his disposal, they can be part of the missing pieces - contested mids that can get first use, link up by handball to players on the outside or streaming forward. Currently we just seem to bang the ball on the boot (Marshall, Gresham, Steele all does this), very low percentage, no wonder we have the worst forward entry efficiency in the league.

Zaine obviously less likely to get caught pirouetting or bad turnover because he’s far more conservative offensively than Doog.

But he got clowned 1on1 against hogan yesterday.

We either need Doog to calm down offensively and concentrate on his role,
Or we need Zaine to improve 1on1.

Basically it seemed to me he took his eyes off the ball and worried to much about his man, and in this case a smart player like hogan is able to feign the ball drop until the last second at which point Cordy has lost it.
Cordy was fine in the last 3 weeks where our mids were at least competitive in the middle and putting some pressure on opposition’s entries, GWS basically waltzed the ball through the middle at will, all of our defenders were caught out of position because our game plan ask them to press up.

Cordy definitely had a bad game, but saying that Howard would have made a big difference yesterday was wishful thinking.

Membrey is probably a good reminder that players are human beings. Seb isn't perfect but he's been one of our best players in a terrible era and continues to adapt to roles that new coaches throw at him and is still in the best 22. His career and loyalty should be commended not trashed.

I get the frustration, poor drafting and trading have made us a pretty hard watch in the last 12 years but hopefully it's turning around and this is the start of a bright future. Picking out players as scape goats is poor form. You can criticise elements of performance but sweeping denigrating assessments of them is pretty ordinary.
Exactly.

Our real season begins. Expecting big changes. Butler, webster and that tier of players should be nervous.
I think the only 2024 contracted player to get delisted will be Matt Allison.
Leo Connolly and Tom Highmore will follow him out the door.
If Dow gets picked up in the trade period Jack Bytel gets shown the door.
I think the rest of our outs will come from trading out and maybe Gresh in FA

If Ross the Boss is content playing just the one ruckman then Campbell likely stays on the list in my opinion

If you can tolerate it...
Watch a replay of the game.
#25 just gets monstered in the middle.
Not just a little. They absolutely smashed him.

He has a big, big preseason ahead.
Yes, but what a brilliant learning experience for him.
The best investment of finals minutes we have had in decades.
Speaks highly of both the coaches belief in him, his talent and his professionalism, and the wisdom of that same coaching panel.
Lyon specifically name checked Damian Carroll yesterday, after only beginning praising “the development team” over the last month or so.
Harvey, Hayes, Enright and Carroll.
Nice group of peers!
I reckon Carroll has had a massive impact on Lyon this year, and a massive impact on our whole team improvement.
I am a huge fan.
(As was both the Hawthorn and Collingwood football clubs).
