Seriously though, there are state league players closer to playing footy than some of our guys. Draft with high picks, back fill with some state leaguers. Guys like Greenwood, Fiorini, Matho etc that would walk into a spot way before any of our fringe guys.
Not sure that’s the way to go either.

It may help with depth in the short term, but you’ve gotta find youth with upside.

We all know most of those players aren’t good AFL footballers, just good vfl players that might be able to help fill roles if we have injuries.

10. Connor O'Sullivan (10)
Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
DEF/FWD, 198cm, 92kg
Talent League: 9 games, 20.4 disposals, 7.0 marks

O'Sullivan is an assured key defender that combines stout defensive work with intercepting ability and a want for the football in his hands. He's a mature body and plays with a country physicality, setting the tone and winning carnival MVP for the Allies. O'Sullivan has spent time up forward and even on-ball in short bursts, but will be drafted as a reliable backman.

12. Ollie Murphy (13)
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
DEF, 200cm, 85kg
Talent League: 6 games, 9.7 disposals, 4.2 marks

Murphy's competitiveness and reading of the ball has been a revelation after spending time forward and on a wing in previous seasons. He spoils more than intercepts and doesn't get involved in transition out of defence, but his positioning, reading of the play and closing speed on the lead make for a really solid foundation as a key defender.

14. Arie Schoenmaker (15)
Tasmania Devils/Allies
DEF/MID, 194cm, 89kg
Talent League: 6 games, 26.5 disposals, 5.7 marks

Schoenmaker is one of the best kicks in the draft, effortlessly launching it 60 metres when he wheels onto his left foot out of defence. He has third tall size at either end of the ground, but his ability to find the ball in space and kickstart transition is invaluable for the Devils. Schoenmaker knows how good his ball use is - he averages six more kicks than any other player in the CTL.
Schoenmaker had 32 touches on the weekend. Ollie murhphy will be avaliable at our first pick. If we get a first round compo I would happily take him with one of them

It’s probably right. But this is where it’s heading.

Great gig.

Insane money. Women and being worshipped by fans.

It's an average. For every Brad Hill on $900k, there are 20+ on sub $200k like Allison, Bytel, Connolly types on minimum chips. Average wage means **** all like those average ages. Senior decent AFL best-22 players that sit below the stars would usually be on around about $500k to $700k.

And kicks it 60 meters??

They followed Melbourne and said if you’re gonna tank, do it properly.

100% meanwhile we had the AFL involved in the direction of the club cause we needed them to extend financial assistance... we were told to get competitive ASAP

The draft is supposed to give access to the best talent to the teams that need it most - the Father-Son Rule works contrary to that, and as such should be abolished. It's not fair and if we ever benefit from it, it still won't be fair.
Professionalism (as this sport supposedly is) and romanticism cannot go hand in hand. No such thing as equalisation as long as these “cutesy” little exceptions occur.

Professional. Amateur.
Pick one.

I think they are good enough AFL players. State leagues have some talent just sitting there. Nick Martin and Durham types came from state leagues didn't they. I we are relying on a weak draft to replace all of the depth we are cutting we'll struggle to fill all the spots.

No issue with going for a couple of state league players. We’ve done well in the past.

Not overly keen on Mathieson types though.

Dogs sniffing around injured Saint

A second club – the Western Bulldogs – has expressed interest in hard-luck St Kilda defender Nick Coffield, one of a number of Saints whose future is in limbo.
Brisbane also inquired about the out-of-contract Coffield, the No.8 pick in the 2017 draft who has not played at AFL level since 2021 due to an ACL setback and then persistent calf issues.
The 23-year-old made it back for four VFL games late in the season, averaging 23 disposals, six marks and eight rebound 50s, and is one of a number of out-of-contract players on the Bulldogs’ radar, including promising Lion Kai Lohmann.
Rivals believe fellow Saints Hunter Clark and the contracted Jack Billings (2025) and Dougal Howard (2024) are also gettable. St Kilda are keen to invest in the draft, but none of this group is likely to score them a high-end selection.
Billings – who coach Ross Lyon views as a forward only – has mild interest elsewhere and would ideally like to move on after playing only three senior games this season, but key defender Howard seems more likely to stay.

Zak Jones, Jimmy Webster, Daniel McKenzie, Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes are also without a deal beyond this year. Restricted free agent Jade Gresham’s future is also uncertain, particularly given it is highly unlikely the Saints would receive first-round compensation for him.

Well they have only gave notice to 4 players to make way for the draft picks , fully expect anyone else that gets moved will be for a better replacement - the way it should be - well we hope so.

Don’t forget a #1 draft pick who retired prematurely and a top 18 player that developed a heart condition out of the blue, and also retired prematurely.

Paddy, at least, should count for something.
