He would for sure but it's fools gold. Too old, too injury prone, too overpaid. He's taking a spot off a player who is going to build cohesion and synchronicity with his team mates. If we aren't going for a flag next year we would be better giving Windhager an inside mid role and playing him there.

I'd rather use Gresham's compo on a guy like Demattia and have him building up on the list than some old guy taking a precious list spot off others for a few spot upgrade on Gresham's compo. The player we get there might end up better than what we traded up to get anyway. It's a pretty even draft between about 8 and 20.

You answered your own statement Gringo. I get you think its a band aid fix, but if we get another early pick for just a little more salary then its a no brainer really. If we get pick 13 in the deal we can use it on Demattia and play Sheils whilst the new kid/s develop. Very few kids are ready to play full time midfield in their first year. Windhager might be ready next year and if he is good enough he will play, otherwise he looked comfortable across the half back line.

There is a modicom of risk with Sheils injury history, but it is no more than other players who have struggled to play in the past few years - Gresham being one of them.

Like many of us - you highlighted how poor our midfield were this year. Our new fitness guy will have an insight on how serious or long term Sheils foot problems are. If we bring in Sheils and he works out and we have some luck with other long term injured players (Jones, McKenzie, Coffield etc), then all of sudden we are a lot more competitive next year.

We are possibly 3-4 players away from becoming a serious flag chance - break away midfielder/s, ruck forward and key marking defender. Jones, Sheil and Dow might fill the midfielder need, Hayes the 2nd, that leaves the key defender role. Van Es is still a wait and see, so if Howard leaves I dont know where the other defender comes from?

Of late the forum focus has been on Gresham and Sheil. We can debate forever about individual players, their positives and negatives, however it will be out of our control.

To bridge the gap at the highest level I believe we need to recruit:

A big ruckman(Moyle/Flynn/Darcy?) to free up Marshall to allow him to swing between key positions and back up ruckman. Marshall's attributes could be better used in a number of positions if freed from the sole ruckman.
A power mid fielder (?).
A key tall backman (Petty?) to match the oppositions key forward.
A tall contesting forward (Petty?/Chol but needs to become aggressive rather than being lackadaisical) who can bring the ball to the ground, and
Add depth and speed to midfielders/small forwards (Henry, Dow? and others) to meet RTBs game plan and break the lines.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a key saint/s swapped to achieve an outcome.

Callum mills out for a while at Sydney. Torn rotator cuff. 9+ months rehab. Their black line is stuffed. Surly they have a crack at Howard

Petty as in Harrison Petty?

You think were gonna go after or get Melbournes forward line savior as a defender?

No.

Emerson Jeka delisted by Hawthorn.

Would absolutely check him out as KPP depth. 198cm 96kg, and only 22. Worth more to us than Highmore, especially if Howard goes, because he’s actually KPP size.

Could potentially even pinch hit in the ruck.

Biggest problems were staying healthy and consistency.
Hawks supporters say it’s an attitude issue more than anything else.

Ross and Enright’d fix that up quick smart.

Free up Marshall? It's being in the ruck that lets him play on ball. Which is his strength. Playing key is not freeing up

We need to get one of these north late first next year. Perfect to package up with ours to get to the pointy end
They will be going for a discounted rate because they have to offload them this year before they get confiscated next year . 3 free draft picks - afl has lost the plot .

one comment from a blues fan says essendon right into hollands, even saw him on a predicted team lineup for next season,if anything in that they may not be so keen to lose the likes of dow and fisher or certainly both

cant see other clubs chasing them too hard
Zero chance Blues let Ollie go. Maybe they are referring to Elijah Hollands?

Our backs are pretty good. Personally I want to keep Howard because I'm not convinced there's anything better out there. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Mids, mids, mids. We've sounded like a broken record for over a decade but we need star power. We've lacked it since the glory 2009/10 years. We get absolutely killed on the spread from clearances and when the opposition play slingshot footy. The giants final was the perfect blueprint into our weaknesses (and some, our defence unfortunately had just about their worst day of the year).

We have Hammer, he will be better than Lobb.

Hammer looks a better long term forward but the reason that Lobb is paid like a star is because every few are dual position like him, he's a decent forward and decent ruck. I wouldn't invest in him personally but if you want that role he's probably the best at it. Bruce was actually reasonably solid at both but a step down from Lobb.

Our game style is based on losing the midfield though, win it back on half back. Be great to be competitive there though!

He's not a long term option, he's unlikely to play more than 12 games a year and getting over 30 doesn't usually add up to improving that. To me if we were in contention he'd make sense. Otherwise it's a distraction and a bit of a waste of time.

Can't see them letting him go either. He was a premiership lump defender though.

Bruce was a shocking ruckman

Agree Marshall's best position is in the ruck, he was tried as the 2nd string during the Ryder era and he didnt have the impact forward we would have liked. Jack Hayes or Isaac Keeler might be the player, but it wont hurt to look at another key forward/ruckman in the Lobb/Chol mold. If we were to attract another I would then look at playing Hayes as a key defender to see how he goes.

when Ben king joins us next year maybe he can take that role?
