I’m still having a chuckle re how many people in here don’t rate Langford

These highlights …. Dominant all year , every level

Actually hurts teams with possessions leading score involvements player in nationals

Particularly like his highlights against VFL hardened players too
Absolute class that boy.

Funny seeing him have bounces when apparently he can’t run ha ha

I think Carlton are stuck between thinking we can win the whole lot next year in which Draper is the better choice for them as a right now plug and play or planning slightly into the future where they get FOS and then land Reid in a trade period in two years time.
Carlton got rid of their depth.

Can't see them winning it unless they have a great injury run.

I see them dropping.

Impressive highlights and based on those I’m predicting he will be the best player in the AFL WaynesWorld19

How does he compare pace wise to Cripps, Bont, Tom Green?

Love it , you always do well . Lindsay is a great call

I’ll say Gerreyn and Langford the main 2 that will outperform your draft rating and Murphy the main one to underperform

But only time will tell ! Only my opinion and not fact
I wanted to put Lindsay above Ashcroft as well, but just couldn’t diminish Levi’s body of work too much

Langford’s definitely my outlier this year. Gerreyn I’m not as confident placing that low, he’s a very physical player which will serve him well in his development

Thoughts on my bolter in Will Hayes? Think if a team can get him lower than 25 they’ll be doing very well, as dynamic and forward-moving as any player in this draft IMO

Didn’t have issue with Hayes there , like him and Angove from WA

Hayes has got real weapons and one of my under radar favs

He gets to the outside like Bont , better than the other 2

He’s a real hybrid inside / outside

Lots of running bounces , he’s not quick and actually quite slow but when you have high cruising speed and elite endurance I don’t think it matters as much

Chris Cavanagh

I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the industry over the past week and I haven’t heard any names linked to North outside of Tauru. He’s clearly the one they’re eyeing and suits them best among that crop of top-10 players.

Any word on who Carlton are interested in with pick 38 if they don't have to use it on a Campo bid?

Chris Cavanagh

Really depends who is left when you get to that range in the draft but word is they're looking at rebounding half-backs and potentially a key defender. The mail is that the Saints could be every chance to bid on Ben Camporeale before Carlton gets to that second selection, though.

Jayden Nguyen tested through the roof, also placed well in the TAC Cup League medal. What are the chances he goes late?

Chris Cavanagh

Will Richmond trade any of their picks for future picks. Do you think they should just concentrate on picking the best top 4-5 players and build again for 2025

Chris Cavanagh

I think they're better loading up on this year's draft, given it is stronger and next year's draft is a little more compromised with Academy players. But I wouldn't be surprised one bit if the Tigers trade one pick into next year and spread it out just a little.

Should Richmond take all 8 picks in this draft or trade a couple for next year?

Chris Cavanagh

I think it would be wise to trade one into next year and give themselves at least two first-round picks going into 2025. They'll get plenty of offers to do that on draft night I'd suggest. Blair Hartley's phone will be running hot.

The biggest mistake North make is to bow to pressure and select a mid at 2. They must back themselves & select their man Tauru! Do you agree?

Chris Cavanagh

Yep, I agree. If that’s the player they need and they can’t execute a “slight slide” down the order, they have to take Tauru even if it’s a few spots earlier. It’s a bit of a punt, but there could be a big pay-off and North simply does not need another midfielder like a Jagga Smith.

What do you see as being most likely trade option for Saints pick 8 if they were to split it?

Chris Cavanagh

The big watch is on GWS with three later first-round picks. Could they trade two of them to the Saints for pick 8? I think it’s every chance. I can’t see the Tigers trading two of their picks to get another top-10 pick, given they are already very well placed.

Should Carlton fans be worried about Finn O'Sullivan's injury record or is he just that good anyway?

Chris Cavanagh

Not too much concern for mine. A couple of his injuries this year were simple contact ones with his finger and his thumb, so they’re not as concerning as repeat soft tissue injuries or knees would be.

IS Ben Kennedy a realistic chance to be drafted? From Xavier College and Murray Bushrangers.

Chris Cavanagh

He got invited to the state draft combine, which suggests there is some level of interest from clubs later in the order. He had a strong camapaign for Xavier in the APS and he's fast, powerful, kicks the footy well and can take an intercept mark. So he's not without a chance to be a late pick or rookie.

1

Where does Luke Kennedy land?

Chris Cavanagh

Good chance to be a late or rookie pick for sure. There's a fair bit of interest and some believe he could come into play as early as the 40s or 50s. Has been a consistent performer for the Sandringham Dragons the past two years. Finished second behind Levi Ashcroft in the Dragons' best and fairest this year.

Concerned about FOS lack of production. Yes he's high impact but disposals are really low. Is this an issue? How much impact did injuries really have on him?

Chris Cavanagh

It’s true that Finn O’Sullivan doesn’t have as many runs on the board as others this year, because of the injuries which meant he couldn’t really get going at full steam. I believe his finger which he had surgery on was quite sore all year, which wouldn’t have helped when he was out on the park. He’s a high-impact player, though, who doesn’t need 40 touches to have an impact on games. Some of his matches this year were better than the stats sheet suggested, including when he played VFL for Richmond.

With a strong top 30 teams like NM with only 2 picks would surely be live trading on the night. Could be a frenzy. Will North trade futures to get in this year.

Chris Cavanagh

The Roos would love an extra first-round pick this year and have certainly tried to do that by sounding out clubs like Richmond and St Kilda to try and split pick 2 – without any success so far. They’ve got all their future picks for next year, though, so they will definitely consider trading one of them into this year on the night if there’s a player they want available in the right range.

Could Ollie Hannaford make it to West Coast's second pick (30). Has real Toby Greene type vibes about the way he plays

Chris Cavanagh

Probably more unlikely I'd say, given there are a few clubs with picks in the 20s who like him and are looking for that kind of player. It's been quite the rise for Hannaford in the second half of the year.

Chris Cavanagh

Believe they're taking a look at Luke Trainor, who is a 194cm intercept defender who looks up to Tom Stewart. All indications are the Dogs might be looking for a small-medium forward with their first or second pick, though.

Hawthorn have stated they would like to improve their draft position and would like talks. Who would they target, and how would they do it with little capital?

Chris Cavanagh

I think everyone with later picks wants to move up, but that's going to be easier said than done. Collingwood's in a similar boat, too. There should still be some good players available in that range for the Hawks, though. Players like James Barrat, Tom Sims or Hamish Davis could suit. Kayle Gerreyn - whose dad Chris was drafted to the Hawks in 1992 - would be another name to watch for as a 199cm forward-ruck. The Hawks should get tough midfielder Cody Anderson as an NGA player later in the draft, too.

Is Sam Lalor pretty much a lock for Richmond at Pick One?

has essendon missed a trick by trading out their pick? Or would the bid on Kako have come before their pick if they hadn't traded it out?

Chris Cavanagh

Melbourne and St Kilda always had picks before Essendon anyway and liked Kako. Richmond has done work on him too. So I think it was the right move to shift that pick into next year. The Bombers also have the option of trading that pick from Melbourne (or their own future first pick) back into this year's draft on the night if there is someone willing to do a deal.

What's the latest news with north finding a suitor for their pick 2? Has Richmond ruled themselves out?

Chris Cavanagh

I'd be shocked it if was Richmond now, it won't be Carlton, I can't see it being St Kilda and there's not a lot of incentive for Melbourne to move up. Adelaide (pick 4) is the one to watch, but that looks more unlikely than likely.

0

Who are West Coast targeting with 2nd pick? Will they be looking to take best available or target a tall defender to address list needs?

Chris Cavanagh

Eagles have definitely got their eyes on a key defender and have been linked to South Fremantle defender Tom Bell, but he won't be the second pick. The mail is they're looking at some forwards around that second pick. Taj Hotton probably won't get that far, but the likes of Jonty Faull, Cooper Hynes and Ollie Hannaford could be in the mix.

0

Any chance Geelong will try to trade back in for an earlier selection than they currently have?

Chris Cavanagh

All the clubs that don’t have top 30 picks will be looking to get back in, but that’s going to be easier said than done because clubs with picks in that range aren’t particularly interested in giving them up in what is a very strong draft this year.

How does Sam Marshall compare with Jaspa Fletcher in terms of playing style? And will he end up playing on the opposite wing for Brisbane for the next decade?

Chris Cavanagh

Yep, Marshall is fairly similar to Fletcher. More of that outside player who is an elite runner. His BOG performance in the Coates League Grand Final certainly made many stand up and take notice. The reigning premiers are in a very good spot. It’s been a strong list build from the Lions and now they’re seeing these father-son and Academy guns come through as the cream on the cake. There’s more on the way next year, too.

Should we really believe there wasn't some handshake agreement between Richmond and Brisbane not to bid on Ashcroft?

Chris Cavanagh

It’s an interesting one. Many think Ashcroft is the best player in the draft, but if he’s not No.1 on the Tigers’ draft board then they won’t bid on him. If they think Lalor is a better fit for them, it’s fair enough for them not to place a bid at No.1. It won’t be far after that that a bid comes, though.

Hi Dave, any chance James Barret slips to the pies, if not who do you think they will select

Chris Cavanagh

Chris here, not Dave. But Barratt comes into the mix from the mid-30s onward I think. The Pies’ first pick should come down to pick 47 or 48, so he might be gone by then. The Pies have also put some work into WA medium-forward Hamish Davis, but he’s in the same boat and could be snapped up from the mid-30s onwards. It will really come down to who is left over for the Pies, but they should still land a good player with that pick.

Why do so many predictors have Jagga Smith sliding?

Chris Cavanagh

I wouldn’t say Smith is a slider at all. No one thinks he will get past the Saints at pick 8 and he’s a good chance to go before that given there’s interest from Carlton, Richmond, Adelaide and Melbourne as well. It just depends what type of players those clubs at the top of the order are looking for because that top group of midfielders are all a little different.

Is North Melbourne taking a punt if it takes Tauru at pick 2 or is he really what the Roos need? Seems a big price to pay for potential...

Chris Cavanagh

I do think it’s a bit of a punt, because Tauru is raw. But if North doesn’t take him at pick 2, someone else will in the first seven or eight selections, so it is not a huge stretch. Don’t expect too much from him next year, but got traits that suggest he could be a serious AFL player in three or four years’ time.

0

Thank goodness for Sydney - they seem to be the only club with the cahones to bid on rival players. Why are clubs so hesitant to do this?

Chris Cavanagh

It’s a good question. The Swans have a new list management team this year but do have a history of placing bids and have picks in the right areas to place a couple more this year.

0

Hi Chris what chance do you think the Tigers are of getting Jagga Smith with their second pick? He looked great for the Tigers' VFL side this year!

Chris Cavanagh

Jagga’s definitely being linked to clubs in front of the Tigers, including Carlton, Adelaide and Melbourne. But I think there’s every chance Smith and Josh Smillie could be available at the Tigers’ second pick. Smith was arguably the best-performed player of the year across all levels and is going to be a star at AFL level for a long time.

0

If Rich r still deciding between FOS / Lalor for pick 1 as some people think, why is there a reluctance to trade up to pick 2 given it would mean they get both?

Chris Cavanagh

It seems to be between those two, yep, with Lalor still the favourite. The Tigers won't get both as their picks currently stand, but they'll still get a very good midfielder at pick 6 so there's not huge incentive to pay up to move up. It's a pretty even group of midfielders in that top 7 or 8 this year.

What about the 19yo in the Talent League? Brisbane picked up McLachlan. Joe Pike and Liam Kershaw stood out in the Young Guns game and a lot of interest in MSD

The feeling is Joe Pike is a good chance to get an opportunity as a later pick or rookie. Was in the mix mid-season as you say and continued to develop nicely with the Geelong Falcons this year.

Should Richmond do a pick swap with North to get the 2 absolute best midfielders in the draft (apart from Ashcroft)

Chris Cavanagh

I wouldn't, if it means giving up two first-round picks to get that selection. There's not much between the top 7 or 8 midfielders this year, so the Tigers should still get a gun one like Josh Smillie at pick 6. Let's not forget he was a leading contender to be pick 1 at the start of the year.

Do you think Sam Toner from the Stingrays has a chance of being picked up late or as rookie?

Hey Chris, what are the draft ranges for a few WA prospects, in Kayla Gerreyn & Jaxon Artemis?

Chris Cavanagh

Later second round or early third round for Gerreyn. Artemis is also a later prospect, who has been linked to Fremantle. It's been good to see a couple more players emerge from WA this year after it was looking thin at the start of the season.

I'm tipping the Tigers to use at least seven picks. They could use the eighth, but would also be happy to trade one into next year and boost their hand there. But they're certain to take a mix of players - at least a couple of gun mids with the first two picks, a couple of key position players, potentially a hybrid forward and a rebounding defender and I also think they take the best ruckman in it - Alex Dodson.

It seems to be between those two, yep, with Lalor still the favourite. The Tigers won't get both as their picks currently stand, but they'll still get a very good midfielder at pick 6 so there's not huge incentive to pay up to move up. Should Richmond do a pick swap with North to get the 2 absolute best midfielders in the draft (apart from Ashcroft)

Out of Richmond’s 8 top 25 picks, how many do you think will be Key positions, Midfielders, smalls etc?

Chris Cavanagh

I'm tipping the Tigers to use at least seven picks. They could use the eighth, but would also be happy to trade one into next year and boost their hand there. But they're certain to take a mix of players - at least a couple of gun mids with the first two picks, a couple of key position players, potentially a hybrid forward and a rebounding defender and I also think they take the best ruckman in it - Alex Dodson.
So the main takeaways for us - we have genuine interest in Jagga, and a trade up is more unlikely

They (AFL) should bring the draft in earlier. Nov 20th is too late in the season. Surely clubs know who they are going to pick.

Most of them need to finish their exams
The COVID year really would’ve been the ideal time to raise the draft age a year so the league could’ve finally started avoiding these conflicts with year 12 completion dates and the added pressure on these draftees worrying about both getting drafted and doing their best in school.

True but then you run into the issue of what are these young lads going to do for 12months?

Do they reject apprenticeships/job offers because they may get drafted? It’s only us footy obsessed kooks that are craving club news/movement that care that it’s late November.

Got a feeling our order is Draper Langford Smith

Presuming Lalor and FOS are gone
You could be right - I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Smith’s ahead of Langford either, but that might be my bias coming though

Definitely think Draper will be our first option. A lot will depend on who North take (I feel Lalor’s locked into Richmond)

IS Ben Kennedy a realistic chance to be drafted? From Xavier College and Murray Bushrangers.

Chris Cavanagh

He got invited to the state draft combine, which suggests there is some level of interest from clubs later in the order.

1

Chris Cavanagh

Chris Cavanagh

Yep, he's got fans as a bit of a draft bolter this year. Recruiters have him in that window as a late to rookie selection.

Which midfielder do you think Carlton add with their first pick, Draper or O'Sullivan?

Chris Cavanagh

O'Sullivan's still the favourite but I wouldn't be ruling out Draper just yet.

Which midfield archetypes are likely to dominate the AFL in the next decade: strike midfielders like Lalor or ballwinners like Smith or Ashcroft?

Chris Cavanagh

Both? Will Ashcroft showed in the GF this year how damaging he can be, even though he's a different player to a Dustin Martin type.

Cal Twomey seemed certain Jagga wouldn't slide to STK, have you heard otherwise and whats your confidence level, considering he was there in the phantom draft?

Who are you expecting the dees to take at pick 5 in order of preference? (thinking in terms of probability that Jagga slides to Richmond)

Most interesting part of that is Richmond will take Dodson

I think Carlton are stuck between thinking we can win the whole lot next year in which Draper is the better choice for them as a right now plug and play or planning slightly into the future where they get FOS and then land Reid in a trade period in two years time.
I'd say thats highly unlikely. We have a likely top 1-5 pick in 2026 in Cody Walker (Andrews boy) and with the revised rules we won't be in a position to trade for any big names like Reid until atleast 2027. We may need to use 2027 picks to get more points in 2026 depending on how we went.

That said, I think we go FOS if hes there. My preference would be Draper though, think he's the best amongst the top 5 for us.
