Call me a Masochist after the horrendous grand final but I enjoyed the melting here last night. Good way to put a rubber stamp on 2024.

We had nothing on Saints fans melting after not picking a midfielder

Hopefully 3 players. Then 1 rookie. Cover 3 of the following, maybe all 4 if we were able to get Mraz, O'Farrell or Barrat as potential swingmen.

KPF
Inside mid
Small lockdown defender
KPD (excl Cochran)

I'd be shocked if we took two keys if we are having wild swings in the 60's.

Inside mid (kennedy)
Small defender (changing game this is actually a highly important position), annoyingly GWS took the elite one I'd have been good taking him over Dattoli if he was there
One KPP (forward emphasis)
Cochran

OR and here is a thought none of the KPP would do anything next year, a couple of SF's or half forwards might. It may be fractionally shortsighted but I get it
Dattoli probably gets a few games, though I don't see why Campbell or Cleary couldn't have been played up forward, Hanily as well.

Not sure I see Bowman getting many. Unless we do actually drop a KPF.

While I like Jesse D

Players like and his position can be found easily or far easier in the later stages of draft or Rookie draft Eg papley

How many good key forwards can be found in later stages of draft or rookie draft ?

Only one I think off is larkey

Even if Armstrong fails
He makes sense as pick considering everything
If you had the choice of picking just one out of Miers, one of the best small forwards or J Cameron, who would you pick.
I would always pick the bigger bodied player hence I'm surprised we didn't take Armstrong.

Here’s who Twomey linked to us post pick 30 in his phantom on Monday:

There's a stack of players they have done work on, including half-back Angus Clarke, tall defender Riak Andrew, midfielder Luke Kennedy and ruckman Jacob Molier. VFL prospect Riley Bice has also been looked at as has small forward Rhys Unwin and versatile defender Blake Leidler, while medium forward Sam Davidson is another in the mix.

(Presumably we can strike off the small and med fwds)

Who knows who makes it through to our eventual pick 🤷‍♂️

Unless my memory fails me, I cannot remember a successful top 20 KPD pick for swans since 2000
LRT was closest, taken 29. But in general, most teams don't take defenders in the first round unless they are superb. I think clubs try to draft top line mids & goal sneaks in the first round. Maybe an attacking defender. But KD not so much. They can always turn failed or extra forwards into defenders. But I hope people will realise that some key forwards do not fit the bill. Logan will never be a key defender. He will be a very good key forward though, if we finally get the forward structure & set ups right. I think we need to employ a Specialist Forwards Coach. McVeigh was not a forward, he was a HB & Mid. We have nobody on the Coaching Panel, except Longmire, who was a Key Forward or who understands, intrinsically or who has been a major part of, forward set ups.

Clarke, Kennedy, Leidler the only options we should consider out of those imo.

Clarke will be good, though not a need, but from my hometown so I wouldn't complain.

Campbell has no right foot, it's a problem if playing up there. No issue trying him there but I don't see it being a sure thing of success. Hanily for me should be ahead. Cleary plays regardless (for Parker)

Campbell's forward (and outside mid) skills got him to Pick 5.

Madness to just ignore this and then keep spending draft picks on small fwds.

How blessed are Brisbane. The best player in the draft, as thought by many, doesn't cop a bid until 5 yet we were forced to give up 5 for Campbell.
Even Marshall, who would walk into the starting midfield at most AFL clubs doesn't cop a bid till 26.
They must think Christmas has come early.

Draft for need, draft for talent, reality is that it doesn't matter outside of the pointy end. It's all a crapshoot so the best you can do is back the boys in and hope for the best.

Small forwards have to finish on both feet. I'm all for trying Campbell as a small forward I'm not saying don't. Can we try it in the VFL first though? Lets see if it works. Otherwise go Hanily or Dattoli

Sure, we did get Gulden for a packet of chips in the Campbell draft lets call that even.

We tried it this year and then moved on, despite him kicking 2.1, 5 tackles, including 3 inside 50, 7 score involvements.

We have 2 rookie spots after we pickup Francis and Hamling
But we don't have to use them, we could fill all senior spots. Taking 2 rookies, means 4 at the national (so 2 more).

I think 5 and 1 is probably the best balance, given how late our rookie picks would be.

Should be given a good block in the VFL as a small forward, and in trials I don't want him near the wing or HB. Lets just forget he's a pick 5 and it's horrid overs and work out where can we best use him, and it's probaly up forward, but he needs to be left in that position period. Do I trust Horse to not shift the bloke everywhere nope.
