Absolutely spot on, this is exactly my thinking. I think a highly rated young KPF prospect (not just another late draft, low ceiling project tall) is exactly what our list needs.

I would be absolutely stoked with Shanahan, and genuinely don’t understand why he isn’t being talked about as going higher.

I mean, he kicked 5.0, 4.1 and 2.3 in his 3 games this season as an 18 year old against men in the VFL. That just screams elite potential to me.

Yeah suddenly he is getting talked up.

This could push Armstrong down?

You have to be kidding, Marshall has had one good year in 8.
Maybe the concussions has stuffed him up but his days are numbered.
I honestly don’t believe he should be playing footy.
Better for all if he gives it away.
In his last two fullish seasons, Todd has:

2022- won our goal kicking finishing 6th in the B&F and

2023- came second (by 2 goals) in our goal kicking finishing 12th in the B&F despite a late season hip injury. In that year (2023) he singlehandedly won us our first Gather Round game in the wet with a late pack mark and goal followed but a goal from the boundary.

As I said, he is a very good AFL forward.

Todd's concussion history is a worry but the facts are:

-there are a wide range of concussions from those barely enough to invoke the protocols to serious
-Todd has had access to top level medical advice
-you have not seen that advice
-Todd did not retire.

While he remains on the list, with our 4 or 5 other AFL standard tall forwards (ages 28,24,23,22,21), tall forwards do not appear to be a needs priority.

If there is Reid AND Shanahan at our pick, we must take Reid. There are tall options deeper in the draft at 36 and 50 (namely Gerreyn and Dennis) I'd target than let Reid slip through.

But I'm starting to get a feeling that we'll somehow end up with Whitlock 😥
I'm the opposite.

Out of Reid and Shanahan, I'd go Shanahan.

We don't need a classy midfielder as much as another tall forward.

on gettable cal went through each player in the top 30, and which clubs they are linked to.

Every mid, small forward, small defender, he went through the clubs and skipped us, as if we were only picking talls.

Dixon retired, Scully delisted, Lord uncertain, Marshall possibly going, a tall at our first seems pretty clear, unless someone of real quality slips.

Odd one in invite list is Matt Whitlock , would seem well out of first rd. Bulldogs maybe, was rumour of Saints taking both brothers.

If we take a tall with a first, it could really change our later picks, had Gerryen, West in there, maybe Datolli comes into mix.

Finlayson and Marshall are very good AFL forwards who had 2024 cruelled by injuries. Very premature to write either of them off. Lord is a baby in "key position" terms and kicked 4 in a final at 20, we have Lukosius and Georgiades who can be great for the next 6+ years. Visentini continues to rise and needs games soon, probably as a second ruck/forward. But you can't play all 6.

Since GFs returned to the MCG (last 3 years) the winners have had 9 goals kicked by key forwards and 23 kicked by small/medium forwards- the year before Fritsch kicked 6 in Perth. We have one dangerous small/medium forward capable of multiple goals in a GF. All 3 winners had multiple and Lohmann, AhChee and Bobby Hill all kicked 4 while the main small threats (Elliot 0, Cameron 1) didn't. This is a massive area of need...still.

Down back, we have a pretty bare cupboard of Tall Defenders- Aliir, BZT, Rat...daylight...Walsh. This is a massive area of need.

Shanahan makes no sense as a tall forward but does as a tall back. But do you spend your prize draft pick in a good draft on someone with the intention of playing him in his second position? I accept he is capable down back but he hasn't proven himself there consistently.

All that said, in a draft hyped up like this one, you simply pick the best player with your first pick. Let's hope Tassie want some of our cupboard full of tall forwards in exchange for Cochrane.
Finlayson and Marshall were both very average all year last year and had major issues not footy form related.

The question is both of those guys going to come back to some form this year or completely dudding out. I'm very worried for the both of them.

With Lukosius coming in to help Georgiades, they have both been jumped over. We still have to se if Luko plays well though.

Marshall had his chance last year to take the number one banana in the forward line and disappointed while Mitch grabbed it with both hands. Hopefully J-Luk can do the same and work well with Mitch.

However, you are right. The cupboard is particularly bare for tall defenders but I feel we can nab a couple with our late picks.

Quality like Shanners is hard to find later.

Interesting that St Kilda passed on Soldo and would rather give Boyd from Norwood a crack.

Also I’m surprised there is not more talk of us going for a winger. Bergman got shifted back, Burgoyne played his best game at half back. We’ve got Boak playing on the outside. We recently lost Duursma, Amon and Bonner. Lorenz is the only backup we got.

IIRC that 2.3 should have been 4.1 as he missed a couple of sitters which is not like him.

Also IIRC, he was playing with a fair whack of AFL listed players too and looked impressive.

Hugh Jackson might be utilised as a winger at AFL level if Boak's injured.
In the SANFL played as an inside mid but that role is taken at AFL level. It might be his only way getting a shot at breaking into the AFL team.

2025 will be his make or break season.

Just going on a few minutes of highlights, Whitlock looks very mobile, athletic and willing to attack contests. I like the Macca19 comparison to Tom Lynch. Saw him hold his ground against Gerreyn in a ruck contest in one of the highlights. He's no lightweight, he could play next year with his mobility.

But who knows what will happen on the night. Just takes one slider to throw out our draft plan.

I'm not against Shanahan per se. If we picked him up I'd be thrilled. My only concern is that the gap between the quality of mids that are ranked 1-15 and 16-40 is much bigger than the talls in those range. So I'm a bit unsure of the quality and type of midfielder we get later in the draft. If we went with Shanahan at 13, I'd almost go with Hargrave with 50. Urquhart is fine as a clearance player but kicking is average.

All too similiar, 195cm leadups, we need a tall 200+ cm, lead and overhead contested type, think Whitlock will be the one.
Shannahan can play back and has the potential to be a better option than Georgiades and Lukosius for the “kick it on top of Charlie’s head” replacement. He would do an apprenticeship at CHB at SANFL level.

If “can play at both ends” appears anywhere in a bio, I wouldn’t go anywhere near them. Probably the biggest red flag there is for kpp draftees

That's just something that's said because of his size. But I don't think he'll play full CHB. It would be something like Curnow where he goes back at the end of a quarter/game
