Can we go wrong with one of Shanahan, Armstrong, Reid or Travaglia? All would seem very high ceiling prospects for pick 13 (16) in any other year and even though we may be more in need of a potential A-grade big forward, adding top young talent to the midfield (Reid) can never go astray. Then you’ve got the possibility of a Will Day type in Travaglia.
If we can land one of those four, then go for it, and if we can’t it probably means Allan or Smilie has slid.

I think we all expect Richmond to take one of Armstrong, Shanahan and Whitlock tbh. I would say that's an easy guess. The one he is guessing (normally he's the one that knows it while everyone else is guessing) who Richmond are going to choose between the 3. I hope they go Armstrong or Whitlock so Shanahan drops our way.
I just went and watched Armstrong again. And I agree that he is a pass at pick 13. Hynes or Hotton. I prefer Hynes but also like Horton.

What’s your take on Armstrong?
My superficial take was that he looked the best of the tall forwards - keen to hear what you think.
I prefer Shanahan to Armstrong for 2 reasons: 1. Body of work; 2. Ability to play back.
Shanahan was a top 20 prospect in December (see post #1). Armstrong rose to prominence this year on the back of a dominant midfield. Shanahan can play back and may need to in a SANFL side that may have Soldo, Visentini, Marshall, Lord and Finlayson- or 4 of them.

Who the **** cares if a key forward can play back?
Nail a key forward in this draft who is not going to leave because of home sickness, and it does set us up long term, along with Georgiades and Lukosius/Marshall.
It also means that if Lord doesn’t really elevate his game to a consistent AFL level in 2025, he could be used as trade bait while he still has some value (ie in next twelve months).
I’m less concerned about the new forward’s ability to ruck or be a like-for-like Dixon replacement. In fact, I’d much prefer them to have proper forward craft.
The only way I’d overlook a key forward with pick 13, is if Armstrong and Shanahan are both off the table and one of Reid, Travaglia, Smilie or Allan is available.

Armstrong at 13 looks good. I’m keen on any of Allan, Hotton, Armstrong, Whitlock, Shanahan, or Reid.
Twomey has Dodson outside the top 30. Is it likely we take him at 31?
Trainor looks like a big slider at 28. How many concussions has Trainor had? He only needs to slide 3 more picks, and we could take him. High upside, ready-to-go third-tall defender, and a future Aliir replacement.

A lot of it is coachable. My main issue is that in the contested mark he does not jump early and by not jumping early he doesn't protect the fall of the ball which in turn means he can be spoilt a lot. He drops some contested marks he should hold. I would need to watch more footage but I think that will be a minor technique thing about the positioning of his hands.
Its a no to any tall forward who doesnt have good strong overhead marking capabilites. I dont want a tall forward whose main strength is there leading or mobility. Rulng out Faull on that basis for a starter.

Trainor has to be worth the risk at our second pick. I can’t see how he falls that far though.
My reason for Shanahan over Armstrong is because Shanahan also has senior experience, and more importantly, can provide a chop out in ruck for a few minutes.
Regarding Armstrong's marking technique, this is what I love about Shanahan because he takes the ball at the highest point, which normally means he either takes it, or gets his arms chopped. Imo, he's more of a commanding tall in marking contest than Armstrong who is more of a lead up forward. It really depends on the set up, I think at Port , Shanahan fits better. If it was Collingwood, I'd say Armstrong fits better. Armstrong is someone you can build a forward line around too depending on the way you play.

Armstrong looks and plays like a slightly taller Bailey fritsch. Not 100% convinced on him as a number 1 key forward. Shanahan reminds me of Jay Schultz. I would take him first. I know a number of our tall forwards have issues, concussion, competitiveness etc. but I don’t see it as big of a need as it’s being made out to be. I would prefer a small or mid with our first pick.

If we're contemplating passing over Armstrong for Whitlock or Faul at pick 13, then surely we'd split 13 (and 36 if necessary) to get 16 and 21 or 18 and 23. Take Whitlock or Faul with one of those picks, and then one of Hotton/Dattoli/Hynes with the other.

Gerreyn over Whitlock and Faull for me. I'd just take Hynes and Dattoli with 16 and 21 and get Gerreyn. He's got the physicality we need in the forward line, Faull has that too but less agile imo.

Come around to thinking if Shanahan is gone maybe Port are too invested in Whitlock and his up side over Armstrong.
It's an insane choice to have at 13 though.

How is gerryn not in the top 30? He looks to have all the tools to be an afl kpf/ruck.

Agree, but with all these draftees, the Vics get rated much higher. Gerreyn is better than the Whitlocks and Faull imo. I'd have him as the 3rd best tall forward in this draft.
Either Armstrong or Shanahan would be a good get according to all the reports and player reviews. Without watching multiple full games of each, pretty difficult to be conclusive on who would be a better choice for us. As we know, even Plugger would struggle in our forward set up…

Smillie would be incredible. His highlights package is amazing for a 194cm player. Clean handling, highly skilled kick long or short, pack marking, tackling and agility. He would easily cover in defence or attack while not on the ball. Unfortunately I don't think he'll be there for our pick, although one credible phantom draft had him slipping to us.

Does Gray not rate Whitlock?
For me, Tauru and Shanahan are the only talls I’d take at 13.
Talls are traditionally more risky in R1 and this was originally a midfielders draft. So the body of work of the other talls in the draft is questionable. Consistency of performance is more important than a highlights reel- ask Wade Thompson.

Playing in a weaker comp.
