List Mgmt. 2024 AFL Draft

The ability to break tackles or at least get his hands free to dish out the ball, something people love in JHF, Hynes does that regularly. His disposals are usually crafty and effective. Imo he already has good midfield craft, has good strength to overpower opposition whether it be to break tackles or lay tackles. Gets first use and his handballs in tight spaces are probably second only to Reid in this draft. I would say he played 60/40 mid-fwd split for Stingrays this year so certainly not new to the midfield group.

Would say his defensive running isn't natural to him. Can lay strong tackles but defence isn't his instinctive move. Endurance has been questioned but by his own admission he's put in a lot of work with external conditioning coaches and recently said he will continuing that program in the offseason with a view to be AFL ready in 2025. Speed has been mentioned too as a downside, I'd say his average speed is fine but yeah doesn't have the natural top speed of some other mids but that doesn't worry me.

I’m hearing some good things there and some red flags too.

Like if you’re a power mid, by god you want to either have some quick steps / burst / speed or be a gut runner.
One or the other. Wines and Cripps are elite clearance players with elite workrate.

Jhf and petracca can break away from stoppages.

I’m not writing off hynes, just asking questions based around concerns I would have biting too early on him. There’s some interesting stuff there, he sounds much closer to a Willem drew / atley type project you pick up in the 30’s than a pick 13 tho.

I'd take Hotton over Hynes every day of the week.

I'd be happy to grab Hynes after the first tier of players are off the board.
I want a midfield/forward player that can play genuine 50/50. Hynes has midfield presence and can win his own ball, where Hotton is more an evasive player. Hotton will be a forward 50 half-forward at AFL level and I'm not sure he's got the same disposal efficiency as Hynes

He definitely can break away from stoppages with ease with power and like he I said his average speed is the same as others and got the levers to push off. Just to the naked eye doesn't look quick.

The player I compare Hynes to is Stringer/De Goey/Dusty. I think there's a big need in our side for one of them that can kick well and Hynes is that. Closest we have is SPP but he's a terrible kick.

I'm confident he won't slip past 20.

He looks sharp, the 50 wasn’t smart but it shows he’s got some passion about playing.
I like players that are all in not half arsed.
Looks like the sort that will definitely make it at AFL level.

Horseshit umpiring from memory though.

Both were, I couldn't convince myself to take a Half-Back at 13, just didn't seem like what we needed. I know there's an argument for Travaglia to move into midfield but that won't happen imo with us for at least a couple years.

Hotton there, but I think he'll slip on draft night too. I guess I went for exposed form over the small sample size + ACL. Club might have a different view on it than me but I for one am excited to see what Hynes would be able to do in that forward half. He's criminally underrated outside Victoria, now there's so much noise amongst Vic clubs.

Didn't allow trading in the mock draft due to difficulties, but certainly would've split the pick if I were allowed to. Just makes way more sense
There are half a dozen clubs who are praying we do not pick Berry at draft night so they can swoop on their pick. But for some reason Berry is underrated on our forum . Even though lively small forward is our highest need .

We ended the season with 1 too many players on our list, due to the mid season injury replacement of SPP by Logan Evans. Thus from the start of 2024, our list changes have been:

IN:
L Evans
Lukosius
Richards
R Atkins
Moss (Cat B)

OUT:
Houston
Dixon
McKenzie
McCallum
Clurey
Narkle (rookie)
Evans
Scully
K Marshall

That is 9 out, 4 in + a cat B.

That means 5 list positions available.

The position of our rookie list is rarely advertised, and we really have no idea who's on it, but unreliable sources seem to indicate that McEntee and Williams are somehow still on it, with Walsh.

We don't truly know how many spots are available on it, but it appears we have 4 main list and 1 rookie list spot. This is questionable though, as we have no idea if Logan Evans has gone to the rookie list or main list.
Picking R Atkins in Houston trade was criminal . He is not only taking valuable place of upcoming kid but also seems like crows poo in our garden .

.

Since then we have had the 9 exits you mentioned, 8 of which are senior. And then 3 seniors coming in. So net 5 out which is 33 seniors on the list, 5 to fill. Delisted Narkle so Cat A is now 4 and filled. Cat B, Moss is coming in so only 1 more spot left.
You've again stuffed your numbers.

We have 5 total spots. Not 5+1.

You've not counted L Evans again.

We had 38 main list + Logan Evans.

Take off 8 seniors, leaves you with 31 given Logan. Add 3 recruits leaves 34. 4 spots.

Delist that one extra in Narkle from rookie list and it's the one extra spot. Taking it to 5.

There are 5 slots.

No this is totally wrong. You're genuinely reading it wrong. I've said we have 5 senior spots, and 1 rookie spot which is Cat B. LEvans is part of the Cat A rookie list and we do not have anymore Cat A rookie spots left UNLESS Logan Evans gets promoted on National Draft night using pick 50.

We have 6 spots, 5 senior and 1 Cat B. Logan is not Senior. He's on a 18 month rookie contract and he came via the MSD so he needs to be Cat A.

I'll put it this way for you, last year we had 37 on the senior list with SPP inactive. And we had 5 Cat A rookies with Logan Evans.

Now we have 38 spots with SPP re-activated, Logan Evans still on Cat A rookie, and Narkle delisted. Which means we have 38 senior spots and 4 Cat A spots to fill. 4 are already filled. We have 33 senior spots filled as it stands. So it's 5 senior spots and the 1 Cat B rookie spot to fill.

Long story short, idk why you're including Logan Evans in a senior spot when he isn't one yet.

Yes that's how I read it. We have 33 spots on the senior list, 4 on the Cat A rookie list and 1 on the Cat B rookie list.

So we have 5 senior and 1 Cat B spot open.

Not at all. Small forward isn't our highest need anymore
Our forward line stinks and Rioli is our best forward who went missing half of the season . So we still not required quality forward ? ? . I am not sure about the ceiling of Berry but having similar forward like Rankine or Charlie Cameron would be god send for us .

Are we banking on Richards ?

Does Berry start above Rioli, DBJ, SPP and Richards? Maybe he does. But would I prefer Hynes play some midfield and let JHF or Rozee spend more time up forward while the 3 of them rotate in MID/FWD roles? Yes.

That's my opinion on it.

Addy23 if we did promote Evans wouldn't it be with our next pick after 50 because that would be our 4th live pick (then we would have an opening on the rookie list if Evans was promoted)

Berry is not Rankine or Cameron. Idk where that comparison has come from really.

Like I said I'd rather have one of Rozee or JHF spend more time up forward than have Berry in there. And to make that happen, we need to take a midfielder with our first pick. And to me, I think Hynes is who would be available at our pick for that to be enabled.

Yes sorry, I made a mistake there. At the back of my mind I really want to split 13 which keeps making me think we could have 5 picks. But yes, without trading, we would be using pick 94 to promote Evans if that was our plan. And tbh I think it's what the club would want. 4 senior spots filled + Promote Evans. Then Rome falls to Cat A and Barrett falls to Cat B

Evans certainly deserves to be promoted.

The really stupid thing about this is that we got Atkins whilst being forced to keep Soldo. I'd have definitely preferred an extra senior spot which would've given us much better opportunities in this draft.

Still, it is not too late. We just need to stop playing favourites

I'm trying to get permutations going for the following positions across the draft

Tall forward, MID/FWD hybrid, Inside Midfielder and Tall Defender

Option 1 - Shanahan, Davis, Barratt, Hargrave

Option 2 - Hynes, Gerreyn, Urquhart, Dennis

Option 3 - Trainor, Sims, Day-Wicks, Boxshall

Option 4 - Hotton, Ough, Mraz, West

What else? I've tried to not get a player across multiple options to see the variety of combinations at play.

And just saying, if we had an extra pick between 25-35, I'd absolutely be taking Angus Clarke (yes I know he's a half back).

Oh, I get what you're saying, your posts were incredibly confusing. Cat B is a spot but not really a main list spot, it's really a supplementary list spot, so you confused me when you were saying 6 spots, because really we have 5 spots we will fill. The 6th is not guaranteed, the Cat B spot will only be used if there is an appropriate category kid available. If Benny Barrett makes it to the rookie draft we will take him as cat B, if not, that spot won't be used.

I want a midfield/forward player that can play genuine 50/50. Hynes has midfield presence and can win his own ball, where Hotton is more an evasive player. Hotton will be a forward 50 half-forward at AFL level and I'm not sure he's got the same disposal efficiency as Hynes
I reckon Hotton has a very strong chance to eventually play midfield in the AFL.

He's super skilled and I think his kicking just needs some work.

He played midfield for Sandringham until his injury.

While most of other clubs think Hynes is not worth a first round pick . The best he can be at 20th plus . On the other hand there is talk that Hotton or Berry can go even before our first round pick.

On the other side , Rioli is in his 30, So I do not see him going much longer . DBJ is hit and miss in forward line . I have not seen much of Richards . SPP is the only one who inspires bit confidence .The next in the line is Mcantee . It is ridiculous to think that we are well stocked in forward line . What makes you think that Hyned can be best 22 player in next year ? . If it is sake of picking midfielder we still can pick a decent midfielder with out other pick but we can not miss gun players like Berry or Hotton .
