2022 (Season 7)Jasmine Garner (North Melbourne)
2022Emily Bates (Brisbane Lions)
2021Kiara Bowers (Fremantle)
2020Jasmine Garner (North Melbourne)
2019Erin Phillips (Adelaide Crows)
2018Emma Kearney (Western Bulldogs) & Chelsea Randall (Adelaide Crows)

So Marinoff becomes the third Crow to win this award. Her teammate Anne Hatchard finished outside the top 20 for the first time since 2020 (from 2019 onwards she has polled 15, 17, 49, 68, 47, 38 and 38 votes again this year).

2024 Gold Coast AFLW Club Champion Top 10:
1. Charlie Rowbottom (313)
=2. Daisy D’Arcy (258)
=2. Niamh McLaughlin (258)
4. Meara Girvan (234)
5. Elise Barwick (227)
6. Georgia Clayden (225)
7. Jac Dupuy (223)
8. Lauren Bella (221)
9. Clara Fitzpatrick (216)
10. Charlotte Wilson (213)

And yes, 2nd is the highest an Irish player has finished so far (Cora Staunton, Orla O'Dwyer and Aileen Gilroy have all finished 2nd once).
Can add Niamh McLaughlin to that list. Gold Coast delisted two of their Irish players during the week, but they can certainly say they got one Gaelic gamble right.

Fitzpatrick has been good too, but was already proven at St Kilda. Manages her first top 10 finish since 2020.

For the second year in a row, the captain Tara Bohanna misses the top 10.

Yeah it's been announced on the Tuesday after wk1 finals for the past 2 seasons, and on Wednesday the season before.

A few phantom teams have Lucas-Rodd making it, which got me to strain the old brain to recall if there's been any delisted players to bounce back and achieve that before. That in turn got me thinking about the best post-delisting resurrections, and the list goes like this:

1st: Ashleigh Saint
2nd: Meg McDonald
3rd: Kate Shierlaw
4th: Tilly Lucas-Rodd
5th: Kalinda Howarth
6th: Stephanie Cain
7th: Georgia Nanscawen
8th: Rebecca Privitelli
9th: Kim Rennie (almost doesn't count)
=10th: Harriet Cordner, Phoebe Monahan, Belinda Smith

Fyi 1st, 2nd and 5th have gone on to be All-Australians post-delisting. 2nd, 3rd and 4th have gone on to win club B&Fs (wouldn't be shocked if 7th joins them this year).

I’d completely forgotten Nanscawen had played a couple of games for North in their first season.

From there she’s gone…

  • Captained Essendon VFLW undefeated to a premiership
  • VFLW League B&F
  • 2x VFLW Club B&F
  • VFLW Coaches MVP
  • First Essendon AFLW signing

And very well may have an Essendon AFLW B&F to go with it in a few weeks.

Not bad for someone who didn’t play footy until 27. Was a good article about her in the Herald Sun here the other day.

None of the captains tipped either of this year's goalkicking winners. Understandable because it's very hard, though the last two picks on this list were absurd:
Who will kick the most goals in the competition?
5 - Kate Hore (Melbourne)
3 - Dakota Davidson (Brisbane Lions)
2 - Bonnie Toogood (Essendon)
1 - Eden Zanker (Melbourne)
1 - Aine Tighe (Fremantle)
1 - Jesse Wardlaw (St Kilda)
1 - Danielle Ponter (Adelaide Crows)
1 - Caitlin Gould (Adelaide)
1 - Chloe Scheer (Geelong Cats)
1 - Monique Conti (Richmond)
1 - Kellie Gibson (West Coast)

Also notable, nobody tipped Matilda Scholz to win the Rising Star. Probable explanation: they didn't realise she was eligible. But somebody did pick Emelia Yassir, who was not eligible:
Who will win the Telstra AFLW Rising Star?
4 - Shineah Goody (Port Adelaide)
2 - Kaitlyn Srhoj (GWS GIANTS)
2 - Elaine Grigg (Western Bulldogs)
1 - Sophie Peters (Brisbane Lions)
1 - Lucy Cronin (Collingwood)
1 - Emily Gough (Essendon)
1 - Lila Keck (Carlton)
1 - Laura Stone (Hawthorn)
1 - Emelia Yassir (Richmond)
1 - Charlotte Simpson (St Kilda)
1 - Jessica Rentsch (West Coast)
1 - Abby Bushby (West Coast Eagles)
1 - Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner (Western Bulldogs)

Question is whether somebody from that list will win AFLPA Best First Year Player, which hasn't gone to a teenager since 2022 S6 (Rowbottom).

The threat: 26-year-old Eilish O'Dowd, who averaged 15.3 disposals and 16.1 hitouts from 11 games for GWS. Very strong debut season. HOWEVER, clubs can only nominate one player... so the Giants might go with Srhoj, which would throw it wide open.

Top 10 in AFLCA award voting as well, and should make the AA 42 player squad if not the team

Swap:

Koenen for Dunne
Wright for Birch
Goody for Ellenger
and probably McDonagh for M. Prespakis, despite not being like-for-like

imo.

Surprised to see Ponter in the squad. She's mostly had a down year, albeit she was eye-catchingly good in a couple of games. It feels like she's there based on reputation more than anything.

She's well down in every statistical category from last year. Has gone goalless six times (in twelve matches) this year and has 12 or fewer possessions nine times.

Swap:

and probably McDonagh for M. Prespakis, despite not being like-for-like

Make it Ponter for Prespakis then. At least Ponter players the stoppage midfield at times so it's somewhat like-for-like, and I'd take McDonagh this year over Ponter.

The one thing I will say in Ponter's favour is that she remains a big-game player. Nine of her 15 goals so far this year have come against top-four sides (five against Hawthorn, three and one against North).

It's disappointing that the team that finished undefeated for the season, on top of the table, with the best attack, the best defense and with a harder draw does not have the most players in the AA squad.

No it's not.

Am I missing something re Goody? Has had a great first season but would have all of Parker, Sherar, Prespakis, and McNamara comfortably ahead of her. Could also throw in Beeson, Mia King and Nanscawen and possibly a few others.

No real problems with any other selections.

Nanscawen did make it. But as for Goody, they're picking her as a small defender, tenuous though it may appear.
