FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

Those bottom two names I've mentioned before, I think we should have interest in both later on. Hayes as a wing/half forward type and Clarke as a medium defender that pushed into the midfield after the carnival when he wasn't injured. Both have lots of upside.

6. Isaac Kako
Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Forward, 175cm, 7/3/2006
Talent League stats (avg): 18.7 disposals, 1.7 goals, 7.7 score involvements
The Age’s August top 30: 12
Essendon may need to match a high opposition bid on their NGA prospect, with Melbourne strongly considering the dangerous small forward – or are they playing games with the Bombers? Either way, Kako, whose parents were born in Iraq, is considered a top-10 lock after a brilliant national under-18 championships. There should be no hesitation taking a sub-180cm goalsneak with Kako’s ability this high after Nick Watson’s impressive debut season. Kako is powerful, and has a knack for creating scoring opportunities and kicking audacious goals from seemingly hopeless situations. He can improve defensively, but can impact the game beyond the forward 50.
If this is at all true it poses an interesting question for the Bombers, whether to trade out their first or stay put. It's the first I've seen that he may get bid on before it.

Saw a bit of Kako when watching Croft and didn’t understand why he wasn’t more highly rated, with the current premium on quality small forwards. Will be able to play on ball at AFL level too. If Essendon look to trade out 9 for a future first they could be another option for us to trade with.

Would absolutely love if Hannaford was there at the Geelong pick we’ll get, but I think a team might go a little early on him like Gothard last year.

Got a bit carried away last night, had a top 30 done and thought I'd do a top 50 which ended up being a top 100. A lot of players that I find hard not to like which shows you how much depth this draft has and I haven't included any state league players which I will do later when I've watched some more.

Berry/Hannaford for our first selection
Hotton if we are feeling 🌶️
A bid on Sam Marshall to if we are feeling really 🌶️

Angus Clarke, Harry Oliver, Christian Moraes, Jesse Datollii with our second

Then hopefully we can bump our pick up and take someone like Luke Urquhart or another WA kid, Malakai Champion

South Australian defender Angus Clarke and Claremont's Will Hayes both registered times of 6:16 minutes, while Hamish Davis did the endurance test in 6:18 minutes.

Cody Angove and Jasper Alger, who both ran 6:28, and Adrian Cole (6:24) were among the other strong performers in the test, which was broken into groups and completed at Collingwood's AIA Centre.

Alger unsurprisingly also up there in the top 5

The AFL website has been so poor for coverage over the draft, really wish they’d up their game. Hasn’t really improved since I started it watching it years & years ago

While they're Americanising everything else they leave the combine and majority of pre draft activities uncovered. I'd say this is the only part of American sports culture I'd actually wat to copy.

I believe Naughton was bit of a bolter
Bontempelli to
The year we took Weightman I remember we wanted Pickett but Melbourne took him just before us
We had the two years where we took Darcy & JUH

So maybe we are due? 😜
Depends what you mean by a bolter. Pretty much everybody - Twomey, Knightmare, Landsberger, Fox, Anderson (SEN) and Elliott (The Roar) - had Naughton going at pick 9 which is where we took him.

While on the subject of the 2017 draft, all of them except Knightmare also had Ed Richards at 10 (Carlton's pick) which is now looking like a pretty good call. Knightmare had him at pick 14.
We got him at pick 16. A good draft for us. Our only other pick was a free swing at pick 74 (Callum Porter).

Bont was a true late bolter though. He was seen as about a 10-12 pick until a few days before the draft IIRC. I suspect word had got out that there was some keen interest in him from a couple of clubs so we pounced at pick 4. Unfortunately Billings had already been snapped up by St Kilda at the previous pick. Our next pick was #42.

Reportedly Carlton passed on drafting Richards because he was late to an interview after getting stuck in traffic.
