FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

Anyone who's primary position has been in the defensive 50 should be avoided and ruled out completely with the first three picks, drafting defenders is generally a waste of a pick with everything factored in. If a player has talent you can easily turn them into a defender and in junior footy the players with the least amount of talent generally play in the backline.

surely you just take each player on their merits? Richards came to us as a defender and even if he hadnt of been able to make the move to the midfield, hed be a damn good one.

I really hope we can land Sam Davidson either with a late pick or in the rookie draft if he misses out again. He seems like a guy who is ready to step up at AFL level and can fill a need straight away. His ceiling being that D'Ambrosio / Mannagh level of impact that we often sit back and go damn I wish we grabbed him.

Edit - If he goes to Geelong and looks a player I will be so very annoyed.

For a deep draft, it has been a very low key build up to it. It feels like there has not been as many solid links, rumors and mock drafts, compared to previous seasons.

Apparently Murphy Reid will fall to our pick. Sydney teams think he will be a flight risk if taken out of vic.

Other clubs not sure if he is more of a James Aish/Lewis Taylor type or whether he has the ability to develop an inside game and play midfield.

What do the draft watchers here think of him?

Provided we take someone with pace at 25 I’d be very happy to pick him.

Is he any good? I have zero knowledge of the draft. The above just comes from a mate at GWS

I personally think that out of the last few drafts that Murphy Reid is one of, if not the most quickest thinkers with the ball
And he ends up using it well, he doesn’t seem rushed

I wasn’t too concerned over his athletic testing but had been worried about his stature been both short & skinny
Especially considering he does seem a tad allergic to tackling

Thanks for sharing. I’ve only seen the various YouTube videos but I’m in what seems to be a minority that don’t think he’s the best fit for us. He’s a great user, creative with ball in hand and composed, but he’s small, one-paced in game, hasn’t really demonstrated an AFL level inside mid game and won’t be a pressure forward at AFL level. I’m not sure where he fits. Others think he’d be a good partner with Sanders, I don’t.

Very classy, smart and pure footballer. Knocks are maybe on his speed and physicality. I think if he slides to our pick we should take him, as he adds a point of difference to our team when it comes to ball use / decision making in the forward half.

In his most recent rankings, Cal Twomey rated him the #5 player in the draft. Rookie me (AFL draft central) rank him #3.

Twomey rates his football IQ (he sees things others don't), evasiveness and creative disposal.

Just now on Gettable, Twomey basically ran through the first round, reckons we take whoever slides of Reid, Berry, Hotton (in that order).

To me Murphy Reid is Caleb Daniel but a step faster and tall enough to not be a complete liability in the air or in contested situations. He makes things happen and doesn't waste possessions.
I think there is absolutely a spot for him in our team and I would be wrapped if he lasted to our pick.

Also I think his lack of pace is overstated. He evades and runs away from opponents frequently and is so balanced that he can pull of dangerous kicks at top speed which IMO is more beneficial than bursting away and spraying kicks like Bailey Smith.

Speed of mind is much more important then speed of foot in most cases.

Honestly, a good chance we get none of them as well. Feels like pick 17 is in a slightly awkward spot. We could just miss out on Berry, Reid, Hotton. Whilst it is a slight reach for say, Hannaford. The other players we have been linked to at 17 don't seem to be quite popular on here.

Agreed. But defensively, speed by foot is a big thing, and to create separation from opponents to create an option for the team mate in possession. That is something we do lack.

Then again I'd trust Reid to not turn it over heaps to burn us like some of our turnover merchants do. More high IQ footy players, and less spray and pray types.

My concern with Reid is that we just moved on MacRae and Daniel because they didn't have the transition speed to play outside roles and could be liabilities defensively.
I wouldn't want to replace them with someone who has similar deficiencies, especially when our team can struggle with the defensive side of the game

He nearly pipped 3 seconds in 20m sprint. That’s not slow.

I compared this to Caleb Serong a while back, he was taller, faster agility and 20m sprint. Have you ever watched him play and thought he was slow? I haven’t.

In today's game (and especially against us with our handball game) teams try and put extra numbers around the footy. You can combat that with power driving out the stoppage breaking tackles (which richards does) or elite handballing/vision/composure.

Can never have too many composed midfielders given pressure on ball has never been higher.

Reid would be a great get at 17 (prob 21 after bids).

Our second pick is going to have some heartbreak….most likely Harry Oliver, Ollie Hannaford, Cooper Hynes all gone by 25 (29).

I would like too see us slide up, To get one of tigers, gws or Sydney selections to get one of those 3.

Would cost perhaps 25 and future third? Future second is maybe too hefty a price? especially if we just decide to take Trainor who is probably still there.

Would be flat about Dattoli or Gross due to athletic profiles but would back the club in.

Herald Sun has linked us to Ivisic which is a new one, we seem to be targeting talented distributors as well as pacey ground ball types.

This is how id like to see the draft play out.

Pick 17 Reid Hotton or Berry but if all 3 of them are of the board we take Cooper Hynes.

Pick 25 Hannaford

Pick 35 Gross or Moraes.
