STRENGTHS:

  • Endurance
  • Energy
  • Short kicking
  • Speed
  • Vision
  • Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Defensive acts
  • Size

As all smalls should, Dolan plays with plenty of vigour and brings life to every passage he is involved in. He seems to be in constant motion, particularly as a high forward, as he charges up and down the ground to help connect attacking transitions into attacking 50. Blending a strong endurance base with good speed, Dolan works opponents over and is not only a role player who can feed teammates, but also one who can work into positions to score.

Dolan's creative flair presents itself when operating in the front half of the ground. The evasive talent is capable of turning on a dime, quickly identifying a leading target inside 50, and hitting them lace-out with a short kick. That kind of ruthless decision making and execution makes opposition defenders sweat, and rewards his teammates for good craft. There are few better link players as far as smalls go, than Dolan.

Perhaps the most promising aspect of Dolan's game is that he is quite a handy goalkicker himself. He hit the scoreboard in all five of his Coates Talent League appearances this year, and booted two majors against Western Australia and Vic Country in the Under 18 National Championships. With quality players around him, his hard and smart running usually bears fruitful results.

Dolan is a capable midfielder at junior level but size is perhaps what would hold him back from translating that to the big leagues. He has a red-hot crack nonetheless, and boasts the motor to last on-ball. Given he is likely to make it as a forward, boosting his pressure acts - especially tackling - will be a handy next step. He averaged under two tackles per game in the CTL and National Championships.

That's a hell of a write up!

Skill, speed and kicking with 29

Speed, score involvements and creativity with pick 31

Address needs.

Do still think we could have gotten these guys plus one by trading back

Yeah they probably would have both been there but happy with both of them.

Stoked with Jacques. Was one of the players I wanted with our later picks. Dolan unexpected but addresses a need and like his write up.

Now to see if we will sit back for our 4th and likely final pick. Or whether we will try to trade up?

Josh Dolan
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
FWD, 177cm

Dolan has done enough as a busy small forward to attract a national draft selection. He's a proactive runner and disciplined pressure forward

Bit of a head scratcher, as we just traded Caleb due to height issues.
I imagine he is a lot quicker than Caleb if he is a small forward. I loved CD but he was struggling for speed in the end and also was too small to play down back. Without the speed he couldn’t play as a forward, so he needed to be in the midfield which was always going to be tough. In the end we got great value for him and I hope he goes well at North. But I’m happy with the decision to get another pressure small forward who can hit the scoreboard.

Welcome to the Doggies Josh!

A head scratcher????

9cm taller, quick, small pressure forward, goal kicker, what on earth is like Caleb Daniel

With our current small fwds Flea and Westy, do you see him getting any games ahead of them?
We need his run, but unless Westy goes into the guts, he might be looking on the outside in for a few years.

Sounds like he’d beat Caleb comfortably in a sprint.
And he’s 9 cm taller than Caleb was when drafted (and stayed that height until age 22 when he suddenly grew 4cm 🤔)
sorry mate im confused, Caleb is listed at 168cm, was Caleb only 164cm when drafted and grew 4 cm at 22?
Dolan is listed at only 177cms.

I'm more than OK with the selections, but someone is going to have to explain to me why we knocked back the Essendon offer with those picks.

We could easily have got Jacques with 31, Dolan with 37, whoever we wanted with 39, and had Bombers F2 instead of our F3 next year.

I'm absolutely baffled.

So where do you see Josh playing?
Westy and Flea are locked in at the smalls, Do you see him ahead of Vanders/McNeil/A.Jones as that pressure HF?
