I haven't been following the draft at all this year but it seems like the top 8 or so consists of a bunch of mids and a key defender. Looking forward to us grabbing the best mid available with our first pick - my question to those who have been following is will we get better value from an additional pick after our first or from retaining Josh Battle for the next 6-7 years?
Do you like gambling?

Thats pretty much the season long conversation on here.

You need to give to get and if you value high first round picks and have hope we can find a better player than Battle that will make the side better. You want the pick.

If you think we won’t find better than Battle. You want us to pay him what he will get at the hawks and retain.

I think a lot of posters and i include myself are jaded at the current hamster wheel of proceedings. We just aren’t good enough and we want to attempt going back to go forward.

The clubs who do jump from lower - mid ladder into contention generally make the hard call to invest significantly into the draft at some point.

Good example is Port letting Wingard go and turning that offseason into Butters Rozee.

Richmond letting Deledio & Vickery go and that allowed the facilitation of trades for the likes of Prestia Caddy Nankervis and the drafting of Bolton. They won the flag the next year in 2017.

Vickery was one of the great turnips. Delidio was a high risk loss. If we win a flag next year while stripping the list back I'll be the first to congratulate the club and say that I was wrong but gambling isn't the only option.

You don't go put your wages up at the casino to pay off a credit card for a reason.

There is also a point at which you cut too hard and the youth quota gets to high and competitiveness falls over.

Part of the reason the list is full of holes is because of gambling on the wrong path.

Has the club not come out via Ross and the president and effectively thrown their backing behind the core of kids we have and then made clear the draft is also a continued focus?

Sounds like they are picking a path … the correct one this time.

If you say this is correct, then why are they after Dylan Shiel.

The chatter and background noise hasn't stopped on this one, I would bet the club has made up its mind.

Because it would be a short term fix whilst the kids develop underneath.

You told us we had last year to explore, this one we might go backwards a little then challenge. Now it's wait until our 20 year olds are at an age to replace our 30 year olds and we might be better off.

We were ****ing idiots going after mature players to top up instead of drafting, now it's like we can't moderate at all. Now instead we are going all in on drafting instead of balancing it.

If it ****s up there shouldn't be a single person left that the club that had anything to do with decision making in the last 10 years. Board to the bootstudder.

It's just a shame that no-one sane would want to be on the board because we really need a broom through the place.

delidio by that point was a HBF. cotchin and dusty were well and truly going in that midfield.

Lennox Hofmann named across half back in APS Team of the Year. https://archive.md/6aQwE

Lenny Hofmann, Brighton Grammar
Hofmann patrolled Brighton’s backline the entire season. He would have ranked highly in intercept marks, as he seemed to control almost ever indirect entry. Hofmann’s contest with Harry Armstrong in the all-important clash against Haileybury College was sensational.

We could be in for an all time hall!!!

why is smillie pronounced "smiley"? I don't like it

The question is whether he’s off to Richmond.

Or off to West Coast.

Or off to North Melbourne.

Or off to the Asian war

It's funny, don't care so much if we draft Lennox. But when it's Lenny, I feel like drafting him is a must!

1. Lalor (MID/FWD) 187cm
2. Langford (MID) 191cm
3. Hynes (MID/FWD) 191cm
4. NGA - Hoffman (HBF) 191cm
5. NGA- Cole (FB) 196cm
6. NGA - Linder (HBF) 178cm
7. F/S Peckett (MID/FWD) 187cm

Still need a key fwd/back. would be a great result getting so many NGA and F/S to develop together, all tall boys as well and versatile..

I think its unlikely we take Linder especially given our excess of half backs with Hofmann coming in too

I'd prefer others but if he fell he'd be worth a chance. His champs really spooked me. He almost looks like a jack of all trades master of none to me. Average forward and average mid. In his first champs game he wasn't impacting heaps but looked like he had confidence and BDE. Last couple he looked a bit lost and disinterested at times. I'd rathe FOS slipped down to us.
I think you and others are putting to much weight on the carnival and recent performances.

I’ve poured through a lot of footage of him in the last day.

Look at the prospect - if he fell to our pick.

Yes he is a ****ing man mountain compared to the others. But technically nothing is broken. Covers the ground well and has some forward craft. I think he is closer to the base of his potential but not even close to his ceiling.

There is a lot to like and work with. Which is why I would think that there can’t be 4 clubs stupid enough to pass on him.

A further 37 players have since been added to the state draft combine list, making for 62 players in total.

Among the new additions are Port Adelaide father-son prospects Rome Burgoyne (son of Peter) and Louie Montgomery (son of Brett), North Melbourne father-son prospect River Stevens (son of Anthony) and St Kilda father-son prospect Elwood Peckett (son of Justin).

He's got some serious alpha vibes about him too.

Who knows why he's had some recent struggles... might be stuff going on off field that has affected the kid.

Will be interesting to see how he closes out the season & then tests at the combine.

Yeah agreed.

If in a hypothetical world he fell to us at 5. We would be stupid to pass.

But let’s see. Lots to play out.

I just don’t think it’s right to base everything on his fluctuating form.
