If Geelong could muster up another late first I'd be comfortable with us paying a significant amount, but don't think Geelong will do that. Personally I'd just let him go for the 2025 F1 and pay 20-30% of the wage, but don't think we will do that.
Since our cap is apparently in pretty good shape I'd be more than comfortable with effectively buying picks. Keep in mind Geelong got pick 7 off Gold Coast by taking on about that much.

I think if we are to pay 20%-30% of his wage and Geelong give us a F1 it might get done. But I’m thinking that’s not what the cats have offered.

Reckon Geelong have probably asked us to chip in close to half and that is where talks fell down.

Still, trade period doesn't even start until tomorrow. Be an interesting two weeks.

Sounds like ball was in our court and we shut it down and called the bluff of Geelong/Oliver camp.

Now it’s basically over them to find a way to put up a deal that MFC can actually sell to its members.

I wouldn’t think the members would ever get the true details of a deal. If it actually happened both Geelong and Melbourne would say “We got a deal that we felt was favourable”.

The reality is if Oliver (and Petracca) was serious about moving he needs to put his money where his mouth is and mutually agree to terminate his current contract with Melbourne. Oliver and Petracca can’t have their cake and eat it too.

Sure, if they stay at Melbourne they can expect to be paid what they agreed with Melbourne. But that was to play for Melbourne.

But if they want to change clubs, they need to take a hit to their hip pocket for that to happen.

This is entirely different to Grundy going to Melbourne where Collingwood was wanting to move him and Grundy wanted to stay.

If we're interested in Owies still what do you guys think is a fair price? Pick 48? Pick 53?

Actually if we keep 53 is there a McDonald in this years draft?

Pick 53 has been pretty good value over the years - between 2002 and 2016 the blokes taken at pick 53 averaged 120 games and 5 are still in the system so will go above that. That's more than pick 6 for the same timeframe.

We've had it 5 times in the past 20 years - Simon Buckley, Kyle Cheney, both McDonalds and Aaron Nietschke.

THere's your useless facts for the day.

Manager got approached by another club. Manager asks player if they are interested. Player says yes. Manager goes to club to see if they'll budge.

All seems pretty standard tbh.
Well yeah.. but mid season? (As in asking for a trade at the end of the season during the mid season)

I think you'd be massively naive to think it doesn't happen all the time. Alot of deals are done far in advance

These deals can take a long time to work out especially when there's big money involved. You have to open up the cap space, organise your picks etc. Just look at Jackson, we knew Freo has been chasing him for a while.

Yeah when players want to leave they don't just start thinking about it during the trade period, it's done months in advance.

ANB wanting to go home came out weeks before the end of the season, Bailey smith has been known to be going to Geelong for like a year

Fair enough. Just never heard of a manager asking for a trade mid season to the club.

With a contracted player they'd have to. I expect it was a similar situation with Houston at Port. Port just handled it way better than us and said 'two firsts or he stays'

100% they are. Every team would be looking at their depth at different positions in case of injury or to match their system better.

We would have been sniffing around every backup ruck option since about halfway through last year. We were not the only ones and that's why a few months ago a whole bunch of them started getting resigned/extended.

Players are doing the same as they might 'think' someone is retiring, moving or they have a position/role in the team lined up but a trade or draft pick coming in changes that quickly. Maybe they just want to start a family in the next 1-2 years and have a plan to get back home for it.

Exactly and they could do that as we had already agreed to the 2 picks and he was happy coming here (at the time).

We were happy to send ANB home but there is no way that we didn't have a chat with Adelaide and Port to confirm value first - likely how the information leaked out. No way his manager hadn't ready done the same to make sure he could get to one of them PRIOR to requesting the trade.
