If guns are only AA material, then we don't need them. Give me a Reg Grundy, or LRT or Tilt, or Ted. Trust in our formula for the defensive six. It works and has done for decades. I suspect that Frost could do the role you wish for and give us cover until Snell and Edwards are ready. I also think Cleary could be tried as a replacement for our lockdown small defender for when Harry's ability to take care of business begins to wane.
I actually reckon Wicks days are numbered as a small defender (party due to Cleary) and that Wicks should try to reinvent himself as a small forward. I think he has the tenacity, pace and smarts to pull it off - and could extend his career several years.

Edit: initial post said that Wicks could be a small forward, but a small defender - which didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

How this is allowed is the only question Victorians or anyone else needs to ask themselves when they wonder why we’re allowed to have an academy.

What a rort.

Its interesting the Dogs have asked the AFL for a full investigation over the Smith deal might unearth some spicy info with Geelong.

I have been thinking about how matching academy bids will become difficult with the changes and i mean its a little more difficult, but given that i don't expect any of our three to be in the top 10 it really doesn't become that difficult to match. E.g. At Pick 10 in the new model with the 10% discount you would need picks 23 and 28 to match, or that would still be 37-41 with a pick 46 returning back. Just think it is almost negligible difference outside the top 10 but very tough on top 5 matching.

Can see the Dogs playing hardball at the trade table after this

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. The drop from Pick 1 to Pick 2 is the same as from Pick 28 to Pick 54.

That’s the way it should be. If you have to match in the top 5, you have to sell your whole hand. It shouldn’t be what GC are doing and getting the players at 2c in the dollar. It will be fine we rarely have more than 1 that’s rated each year

Agree. Wicks needs to try the lock down defender role. Not sure he has the temperament or the self discipline, but it remains probably his only real chance of a role in the best 22. Others have gone
past him.

Worrying news.

I am told (by someone who is at least semi-reliable as a source) that Chad enquired whether or not the Swans would be open to the possibility of a trade at the end of 2024.

The Swans said no.
This has really gotten under my skin.
If true:
Of course we have to say "no" but IMO we would be better off letting him go after playing hardball. 12 months later we get a Band 1 compo pick. Whoopdy doo.
Trade him we should be able to get two first rounders.
Freo have 9 and 10. A future first likely to be worse. Why talk with them?
West Coast have 3 and future should be better than 8 you would imagine.
We would need to replace Chad with a quality mid/forward from the top of the draft.
Maybe throw in Corey (if he wants) and shuffle a few late picks for balance.
I would prefer Chad to stay long term but if he genuinely wants to go leverage it to our best advantage.

No thanks we are in a window we have him next year to win a flag. Plus everyone said the same about Papley must have missed him being traded or getting to Melbourne.

Of course that's the alternative. It comes at a cost but may be worth it.
I think Papley's circumstances were quite a bit different.

Is it me or does it seem like AFL players are in committed relationships or even engaged way earlier than the average person? They’re early 20’s and already deciding on where they’ll buy a house and raise a family.

If I seem bitter about this it’s because I am, because we always seem to be on the wrong end of it.

Worst comes to worst and we still get two firsts next year anyway. WCE still there next season

WC 1st, future 1st + Barass compo for our 2 top picks this year and both Warners.

WC can blow us out of the water for $$ and have to pull the trigger now to have any chance of keeping Reid. If Reid leaves they recoup what they're spending now on Warner. If he stays, they have 2 devastating blocks in place for their rebuild

This will gain momentum once our season is over. I don't necessarily think it's inevitable but the media will gladly run with it. I'm forcefully ambivalent, until next week

Whitlock brothers and Charlie McCartin does make us a little tall doesn't it? It depends on who leaves the club but you would back a couple of them to turn good
I think all of them would take some time to develop TBH. The Swans are in a great position with the list demographic. I do believe there needs to be some more depth at the key posts though and if 1-2 of those 3 hit it elevates the trade strategy moving forward.

I'm with you here DA, drives me mental. I know Sydney is expensive, but these guys earn good money and if your average Joe can somehow buy a house here, then these blokes certainly can.
Freo had THREE chances to pick Chad before we did, but saw nothing in him, maybe Chad should remember that when it comes to contract discussion time.
